That Desert Eagle ...lol... Congrats on winning the bid on the Eotech. One of my buddies has had one on his Daniel Defense M4 for several years now and hasn't had any issues with his. I foresee that optic remaining on his gun for a very long time because the only thing that he might replace it with is an Elcan.

Glad to hear that everything went well with your M&P Sport 2. Now the fun begins with all the customization options you're planning on doing.

Tell your buddy that owns the Desert Eagle and Smith & Wesson 44MAG to consider looking into a PTR PTR91. The FN FAL and Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM would also be some great options as well. POF makes some nice gas piston AR10s but this all boils down to what his budget is.

That's good to hear. Never even heard of Elcan before, but as you are probably aware, EOTech has hit & miss reputation, and I'm not 100% confident going with the choice. I just fell in love with the red dot from the video game(CoD4), price was right, so wanted to give this one a shot. Also seemed like it had the most wide open picture compared to other red dots.

Desert Eagle had more "boom", but I think the S&W .44 Magnum kicked more. Certainly felt it more in the grip!

Well, hopefully Opticsplanet will ship my handguard/stock/grip soon & I'll see if I'll like the fore-grip I ordered on this one(all Magpul), I really like it on my AR10. One odd thing that all of us noticed was how the stock, even when extended all the way, it felt about inch too short. You sometime hear about guys with AR "pistol" cheating & using their braces as stocks. I can't even imagine how uncomfortable that would be.

Before I bought my Bushmaster 308, those were the names I also looked at. I'll definitely bring those rifles up with him. 👍 Not sure how much he'll spend, but he doesn't cheapout on guns, so maybe he'll buy something really nice. Not like my other friend who has 100 wants, but his go-to rifle for 15+ year's been a Chinese SKS.

Which one is the problem:

The stock and the pistol grip being too close together for a comfortable hold - length of pull problem, though thats rather rare
The stock being too short to get comfortably behind your optics - eye relief problem
Your face sitting nearly on the rifle instead of the stock - butt stock length problem indeed - how tall are you?

Interesting questions! Maybe "problem" would be too strong of a word(or maybe not). I'm average height(5'10"~5'11"). Right now, it's just the backup peep sights, and I can see the sights just fine, but it does feel like my face is close up on the thing.

Having said that, the rifle shot really accurately for me, so I can't complain. Let me see if I can find a picture of myself shooting it:

Now my Bushmaster, thought it's two totally different sights, so I don't know if it's even relevant:

My arm's bent more, but maybe not by that much. Sight picture/acquisition has been just fine. Stock just feels short.

@a6m5 Elcan is the brand but SpecterDR is the model name of the optic my buddy wants. I couldn't agree more with you about the Eotech reticle, I really like that reticle and love the field of you get with Eotechs in general. My buddy's Eotech was purchased several years before the whole Eotech fiasco. I don't know how old the Eotech is that you purchased but keep us posted on how things workout.

I can definitely see the Smith & Wesson 44MAG having more kick than the Desert Eagle, but I think that's due to the fact that the Desert Eagle weighs twice as much.

As for the buttstock issue you mentioned, you could remedy that by purchasing a Magpul extended rubber butt pad to add more length. For myself both SB Tactical braces I have on my pistols are comfortable to me but bear in mind that I'm only 5'8". For someone else with longer arms the SBA3 stabilizing brace would be the best option due to the fact that it is 5-position adjustable. It is a trade-off you have with shorter weapons i.e. AR/AK pistols and SBRs. What is the overall length of your M&P Sport II vs your Bushmaster AR10?

Yeah, I'm hoping for the best. I'll keep you guys posted. 👍

It was noticeably heavier. Much, much meatier grip, too.

I had both in my hands the night before going shooting & Bushmaster was maybe an inch or more longer than the S&W Sport II. I do have the Magpul buttpad on the Bushmaster, with MOE stock & that is an excellent idea. Stock I have on the way is Magpul CTR stock, very similar to the MOE stock, so I'll definitely try that. Thanks! 👍

@chicagotruck DPMS Oracle was another gun I looked at last week, along with the Ruger 556(I ended up going with M&P Sport II). Yeah, I don't think I could live in Chicago area.

My first handgun was a Glock 17, but I ended up trading it + some cash for Kimber 1911. Still, I liked it so much, I ended up getting the Glock 19 last year. It is currently my go-to gun.

Welcome to the thread!

I need 10/22, but that's about it right now.

Today, I received my EOTech red dot. I haven't installed it, but just positioned it where it's going to go. It came with regular picatinny screw + the thumbwheel, so I went with the thumbwheel.

Been wondering about this. They call this co-witness I think. With the rear backup sights up, you can still sight target in through the optics lens.

Tomorrow, I'm expecting the Magpul furniture to come in. SL handguard I ordered apparently doesn't have clearance for the front sling mount, so I punched the pin that was holding the mount in, and taken it off. Tomorrow, handguard, grip & rear stock install. I still plan on ordering the buttpad. That thing made noticeable difference reducing the kick in my Bushmaster 308.

Otherwise, I think my AR's ready. Bought more of those Walmart Federal brass ammo 100rds for $30(comes to $6 a box/20rds). My ammo can full of green tip stuff should come in Friday, so I'm a happy camper. :P

@chicagotruck you have a really nice collection. I like the fact that you've pretty much checked every box from home defense to conceal carry with just those 3 guns. Like @a6m5 the DPMS Oracle was one of few AR15s that really caught my attention when I was shopping for an AR15 years ago. Although I ended up going a different route, the DPMS Oracle is one of the few AR15s I always recommend to friends of mine.

@Brett ... When are you going to the range?

@a6m5 that's pretty cool that you have an absolute co-witness with you Eotech and iron/backup sights. Also, even though you removed the factory front sling mount, Magpul has sling mounts that will work their furniture.

Finally made it out to Markham Park and their 100-yard range. It wound up being a beautiful day outside for my only day off over the past month, so I figured it would be a great day to head over there. I went at 11am and it was perfect. Not many people around except for nice old retired dudes. It got busier later on, but what a difference being outside makes when you're shooting rifles. In fact, I don't think i'll ever bring my long guns to an indoor range again. Not with their great facility nearby. They also have an awesome trap and skeet area. Makes me want to buy an over/under shotgun and join their league. For all the BS in our county, we do have a great park system. I'll give them that.
It's also pretty cool since the target range is divided by a huge retaining wall/birm and the sheriff's office rifle teams practice on the other side. They had some kind of swat drill or qualifications going on while I was shooting, so it was crazy to hear like 30 guys #operating all at the same time. Sounded like Fallujah, total warzone.

Initial groups were decent considering I've never shot past 25 yards. The first group is to the black NRA target, then to the HaleyStrat target. This is at 50 yards. It was super windy (right-to-left wind) though. I was holding on the left outer tip of the chevron for the tightest grouping there on the haley target. The single shot that's to the right of the dot is holding on the 10 mph wind holdover at 200 yards.

I brought the target out to 100 yards to really dial it in. I couldn't really see where my shots were landing in the black. And it also seemed like none of my shots were hitting the white paper. After the first round of fire, I walked out and found this:

Even for 100 yards, that's pretty ugly. I went to see if I should adjust something and then I noticed a HUGE problem:

I'm such a moron that I took for granted that the lower halves of the rings were already torqued and threadlocked to the baseplate of my mount. The stupid rings are on rock-solid but now I have to try to break them loose again to re-do the bolts on the baseplate. FML lol. What a funny day. Anyway, I had a lot of fun.

Since the scope was borked, I took it off and flipped up the Ultradyne sights.

These are supposed to be zeroed at 200 yards, here are my 100-yard groups:

Bringing the target back to 50:

That was a little better. It's definitely a little weird using the ultradynes. I think you need a 20-inch rail or barrel to be able to really use them accurately. The double peep is great but the front ghost ring is a little too big for me to reference through the rear peep.

I also learned that Wolf polyformance is so much softer shooting than XM193. I wonder if it's because it's .223 Rem vs 5.56 NATO. The lake city 193 shoots HUGE concussive fireballs, but the Wolf is nice and gentle, like a supermodel fart.

Almost finished, but it seems that I ordered a wrong fore-grip. It doesn't sit evenly & moves. I'm sure Magpul has vertical grip that would work better with this handguard.

With the new stock, handguard(🤬 to install lol) & rubberized grip, rifle totally feels "right" now. For a budget AR, I think this will work out pretty good. :embarrassed:

Yep, I plan on adding a sling in the near future. 👍
Nonsense - You need a K98k! :D
For now, Micheal. For now!

Same thing with my Burris scope/red dot combo on my Bushmaster. I finally dial everything in, then it went to hell. Two screws holding the scope to the base was coming loose. I've since applied threadloc, but I haven't sighted them in.

Wolf steel is undergassed a bit.

Only Wolf I ever shot was "Military Classics"? Primer issues. Lot of duds. My only experience with the brand.

So I planned on purchasing the Thompson Center TCR-22, believing that it had Ruger 10/22 guts. It doesn't.

I saw at the gun store how the rifle was compatible with 10/22 accessories, and I assumed that it was because the rifle was aftermarket version of 10/22. I was trying to read reviews when I saw a writer call it a "clone". Maybe it's a legal loophole knockoff design? While I'm not against that, whole reason why I'm looking at new .22 rifle is to move from unproven gun(potential garbage like my Remington 597), and go with the .22 rifle all my friends have & have no issues with. EVER. Back to the drawing board. :grumpy:

Edit: Same place I bought the M&P AR15 from, last week.

I'm thinking yes. Price matches lowest prices online. I might get this, then install Magpul stock at another time. Unless I practice poor discipline & go for that Thompson Center rifle, or Survivor rifle....

If you don't want a takedown, just get a Brownells receiver and barrel and drop it into an aftermarket stock.

That looks like a good deal.
Yeah, this one had iron sights, scope rail, which were big deal to me. Except I totally caught that "I want that latest, cool thing...." & came home with the Thompson Center TCR22 instead.

Put scope on it today, but I haven't shot it yet. Maybe next weekend.

Really nice sights. Detachable scope mounts looks too "tactical" & busy, but that's what I had on me. Now I need some Ruger 10/22 magazines, which this rifle's compatible with. This was $320(+ $10 background check), but there is a $50 mail-in rebate, so it'll come to $270 for the rifle. It comes with the Magpul stock I wanted, even a threaded barrel, so I think it's a good value. Magpul stock would've cost $100 or more, so I think that was the difference maker. Another brand new model people don't know much about. I'm not gonna lie, I'm little bit nervous. :nervous:

P.S. I was asking the guy at the gun shop about TCR22 & I mentioned I was bit worried, because my current .22 is a Remington & very inconsistent. Immediately he asked, "Model 597?" Right on the money.

I didn't even know that you could do that.👍

It's not the Magpul stock though. It's a similar design but it lacks the features of the hunter or backpacker

I did see that it's different from the aftermarket/thirdparty Magpul stocks & it also lacked a feature or two, but reviews & packaging all mentioned Magpul stock, so probably designed specifically for this model.

One of the Magpul stocks I saw online had lengh-of-pull adjustment. This is a compact rifle, so my concern would've been the distance from my shoulder to the sights & trigger, but I was happy with them from the very first time I saw it & held it.

Edit: Magpul M-Lok slots underneath(for picatinny rails & accessories).

After I got my Ruger I don't think I'd ever pick a different .22lr brand. Also got my stock before they started going to the faux wood options.

I don't like the take-down model though, or detachable scopes. After shooting a friend of mine's take-down and at 100 yards, the accuracy difference is noticeable enough that I'd miss a squirrel at or around 75-100 yards. Will have to find a weekend to go back home and grab a picture of it.

I'm shopping for less bulky scope mounts/rings. I'll still get detachable, but probably not this QD style(quick detach). Which stock did you have on your 10/22?

Speaking of takedowns, they had couple of these at the store, too.

They looked like a solid alternative to takedown rimfire rifles, though one on the right also seems to be a takedown model. I thought they would be great for survivalists or something.

That is one unique handgun in a market filled with 100 different branded Glocks. Fascinating.

I was hoping to go shooting this weekend, try out new EOTech & the new .22 rifle, but nobody could go with me. Then this morning, I received a text from a guy I used to work with if I wanted to take a day off & go shooting on Friday. PERFECTO. :P

Speaking of Glocks, the new 19 Gen 5 MOS is making me want one.

I really like what Glock has done with their MOS lineup and can see myself owning one in the future. I'm not in the market for a new firearm but something I would like to see is a Springfield Armory XDM9 with a red dot mount.
