Finally made it out to Markham Park and their 100-yard range. It wound up being a beautiful day outside for my only day off over the past month, so I figured it would be a great day to head over there. I went at 11am and it was perfect. Not many people around except for nice old retired dudes. It got busier later on, but what a difference being outside makes when you're shooting rifles. In fact, I don't think i'll ever bring my long guns to an indoor range again. Not with their great facility nearby. They also have an awesome trap and skeet area. Makes me want to buy an over/under shotgun and join their league. For all the BS in our county, we do have a great park system. I'll give them that.
It's also pretty cool since the target range is divided by a huge retaining wall/birm and the sheriff's office rifle teams practice on the other side. They had some kind of swat drill or qualifications going on while I was shooting, so it was crazy to hear like 30 guys #operating all at the same time. Sounded like Fallujah, total warzone.
Initial groups were decent considering I've never shot past 25 yards. The first group is to the black NRA target, then to the HaleyStrat target. This is at 50 yards. It was super windy (right-to-left wind) though. I was holding on the left outer tip of the chevron for the tightest grouping there on the haley target. The single shot that's to the right of the dot is holding on the 10 mph wind holdover at 200 yards.
I brought the target out to 100 yards to really dial it in. I couldn't really see where my shots were landing in the black. And it also seemed like none of my shots were hitting the white paper. After the first round of fire, I walked out and found this:
Even for 100 yards, that's pretty ugly. I went to see if I should adjust something and then I noticed a HUGE problem:

I'm such a moron that I took for granted that the lower halves of the rings were already torqued and threadlocked to the baseplate of my mount. The stupid rings are on rock-solid but now I have to try to break them loose again to re-do the bolts on the baseplate. FML lol. What a funny day. Anyway, I had a lot of fun.
Since the scope was borked, I took it off and flipped up the Ultradyne sights.
These are supposed to be zeroed at 200 yards, here are my 100-yard groups:
Bringing the target back to 50:
That was a little better. It's definitely a little weird using the ultradynes. I think you need a 20-inch rail or barrel to be able to really use them accurately. The double peep is great but the front ghost ring is a little too big for me to reference through the rear peep.
I also learned that Wolf polyformance is so much softer shooting than XM193. I wonder if it's because it's .223 Rem vs 5.56 NATO. The lake city 193 shoots HUGE concussive fireballs, but the Wolf is nice and gentle, like a supermodel fart.
