Same here, I didn't know that the Saiga had such an unusual looking hammer spring, hahah, wow! :scared:

Its actually a clever design, just look how llittle space the spring needs inside the receiver, all the other semi auto rifles have huge 3'' spiral springs mounted on guide pins and that. Russian simplicity at its best!

By looking at it, I don't trust it.

But it is a design taken straight out of one of the most reliable assault rifles ever created, so who am I to judge!

Congrats, best bang for the buck rifle ever! I wouldn't modify a pre-war Mosin Nagant, they are more valuable and the quality is better too. Bubba the 43' !

That's kind of what I war already thinking. The 1936 model has alot better fit and finish than the 1943. Both have the round recievers.

Didn't you pay around $100 for the last one? Was it the same price again?

Also, how can you tell the year they were made? Are they stamped somewhere on the rifle?

Edit: Never mind about the year. Hickok45's youtube vid had the year info. Looks like a fun, cheap rifle telling by his!

Edit 2: Omnis, you should get one! :D

The last one I paid like $90 from Dunhams, they were on sale. This one I bought at a local gun and knife show for $100. This one came with a few more accessories than the one from Dunhams.

The dates are stamped on the receiver with the serial number.

Depending on how well my sporterizing of a Mosin goes, my next project may be more ambitious. :)

Pretty sure that ones photoshopped, but you get the idea.

I like some of the synthetic stock's I've seen online & in catalogs. They have really simple, clean look to them.

That's what I'm going to do with one of my Mosin's. An ATI Monte Carlo stock, and a Rock Solid Industries scope mount and bent bolt body.

Then maybe play around with the spare wood stock and try refinishing it or something just for fun.

Won't use a Stalin gun.

I wasn't too fond of the idea either, especially considering there is now way for me to deny that they're old Soviet rifles with sickles and hammers stamped on them both.

But; they're dirt cheap, reasonably powerful, and the surplus ammo is cheap.

According to Hickok45 on youtube, some production were contracted out & built by Americans. I think he mentioned couple of names with one of them being Remington!

So I was googling a bit today for ammo storage tips & ideas, along with cheap surplus ammo cans(not possible online, was $8 at the last gun show ). I had heard of keeping the shells dry, but ran into several search results that recommended silica packets. How did I not think of this before? :dunce:

I keep my ammo in the original cardboard boxes, then store those in the ammo cans. How about you guys? Any useful tips?

MTM ammo boxes, and then into MTM ammo cases. Stacked for my convenience.

And don't forget MTM has the new 'Zombie ammo kit' for sale.

Oh, here's a link to teach you how to properly clean your Glock. Enjoy! http://blip.tv/eyehandy/how-to-field-strip-and-clean-a-glock-with-ashley-5484432 :sly: 👍

How do you like them? Only recently I started looking at plastic cases, because I was afraid they won't be durable enough. And as soon as I started reading reviews, one's I've read(on larger cases) about, there were number of owners commenting about how they are afraid the case will crack, or they did crack. I haven't read any reviews/feedback yet on the "ammo can" sized one's that you are using though.

I was, and still thinking about something like a storage chest? I've seen these things in surplus stores, and thought they were larger ammo box/chest:

They were made for medical supplies. My bad.

I might stick with ammo cans, just get few more of them, but we'll see. I'll do little bit more research.

***GUN SEARCH UPDATE*** I know I've been looking mostly at .308 rifles, but there is a good chance I might put it off for another year. I really want a .45ACP. :P Some online gun browsing over the weekend, I thought I was going to start looking for one of these:

Everybody around me wants a 1911, and while I've always been fond of them, I think I've gotten brainwashed to a point I actually want one too. I know Crash was talking about 1911 as well, awhile back. 1911 I've always liked is the completely basic, Plain Jane one.

As it turns out, there was Springfield Armory model that was 100% how I'd have wanted mine to be. "G.I." model with gunmetal gray + black grips. No fancy details or fancy shiny parts on them(a la Kimber). Best part: It's the cheapest one they make(I think it was around $600 online).

I'm quite paranoid about reliability & durability when it comes to firearms, as my very first gun(.22LR Remington 597), I thought was garbage. I started searching for Springfield Armory G.I. 'problems', 'issues' on google. Unfortunately, I hit more search results than I'd have liked. When I did a same search on that Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, I couldn't find anything credible!

Anyway, I really like the gun, so I'm gonna research this a bit more. :dopey:👍

I have a Remington 1911R1, I've seen them sell for as little as $600. I love mine because it's a pretty good faithful reproduction of the original WWI model. Flat mainspiring housing, short trigger, etc. I still need to buy a better carry gun. I love my 1911, but outside of the winter, it can be difficult to conceal for me.

No, that's not the point. I just don't like those guns. If I'm going to get something Russian, it'll be something based on Kalashnikov.

I finally ordered a holster for my Glock 17 yesterday. I never bought one before, as I carry Maxpedition Versipack(has handgun compartment) when we go shooting, plus the gun's too big for conceal carry anyways.

I was surprised by how cheap the Glock factory holsters were, but they don't cover the muzzle. I settled on this $20 holster, which comes with molle straps, and a magazine holder:

I really wanted a digital camo one, but since everything I have is black, that's what I ordered.

P.S. Solid: When you linked Glock cleaning video last night, considering your ...............taste in handguns, I thought it was going to involve a C4 or something.

I didn't know Remington made 1911's. So many companies make 1911's, it's crazy!

I did a quick google shopping search & you are right, they seem to go for $600~$700. Are they fairly reliable? Encounter any issues? Another one of my concern was what I saw on Hickok45's video. He was commenting on hammer or something rubbing the web of his hand? He had band-aid on it to either protect it, or had injured it. He did say that it's still one of his favorite guns. :D

Make up your mind man. Are you going to boycott the commies or not!? :P

I have those MTM cases for years, now. Since I was 21 when I started reloading. I have NEVER had a problem with them. No cracks, no leaks. But then I was very careful with them.

That metal case seems like a good item to have, too. Can't really recommend them because of no experience with them.

***GUN SEARCH UPDATE***

Aren't you suppose to be saving up for a conceal carry?

I REALLY enjoyed shooting my friend's 1911, hell, I want a 1911. His was a Springfield also; I don't know which "model" it was, but I know he said he's haven't really had any issues with his 1911.

Is the holster you bought IWB or OWB? If you're wearing a couple of layers and a coat, I bet you would be able to pull off concealing your Glock without printing.

I just checked out their reviews on Amazon, and there were pretty good numbers of them who claimed that handles came off when topped off with ammo. Then someone else adding that MTM has fixed the handle issue on their newer production boxes. We all know people who could break a rock with a rubber hammer, so I take them with a grain of salt. ;)

What concerned me was the seal. There were couple of guys claiming that their silica gels were prematurely discoloring. One reviewer claimed that he contacted MTM, and their answer was that they never claimed that their boxes sealed as well as Army ammo cans, something along those lines. But I look at the seals on the actual surplus ammo cans, and they don't really look great either. I've read that ammo cans even block EMP, but now I don't know.

I have to become an American Citizen first. Not exactly an emergency!

Well, thanks for the feedback. When I'm looking into larger purchases, I tried to collect as much input as possible, so I do appreciate it. 👍

I had to look up IWB/OWB. The holster is "OWB"(look at the youtube vid I posted!). I wasn't aware of the existence of IWB holsters until very recently, but I was pretty impressed. I don't know how comfortable they are, but they look cool & very handy.

And don't tell anybody, but along with the holster, I ordered an pepper spray. Never used one before, but this one, I'll be able to legally conceal carry. Soon, I'll get a whistle too, and I wouldn't have to worry about getting raped. Seriously though, I'm going to keep it in my car!

I may just have small hands because that's never happened to me. I can see how it could happen, but every time I've drawn the gun from holster my hand has never come up far enough on the grip safety to get bit by the hammer.

I had a few jams with it, but I'm pretty sure it was due to the crappy ammo I was using. I've put about 1000 rounds through it by now, and I've had 2 maybe 3 jams and those were within the first 150 rounds.

I also bought a Kimber Pro-Tac magazine for it that holds 8 rounds instead of the standard 7. That works good, but it is a bit harder to insert and eject from the gun in cold weather.

Well, sounds like minor issues. Hickok45 from youtube, I think he's something like over 6' 5", so he probably does have larger hands than you or I.

I just browsed little bit on my local gun shop chain website, one across the town show two used one's in stock, so I might go check them out this weekend. Most likely, I'll wait for the gun show on February 19th, then decide which way to go. So far, I think I'm going for $700-range guns. Gunsite Scout Rifle, 1911, Saiga, AK(back in contention again :D) interests me. I like M4, but it's bit out of my price range. :dopey:

Neat Hickok45 video I encountered:

I wish I had his "compound". :D

I read about the Remington 1911 little bit tonight, Buds have them for $599(free ship).

It's quite a looker for someone like me, who likes the basic looking 1911s. 👍

Edit: Anybody know why, or how some 1911's have higher capacity like 12? Remington says 7, or optionally 8 with aftermarket mags.

Those 1911s that have 12 rounds or more are double stacked. Not traditional 1911s. Look at Para Ordnance. They make both double and single stacked pistols.
