I have ridden in both a 69 Z/28 with a 302,and a 1970 Mustang Boss 302,as much as I hate to admit,and I really hate to admit it,the Ford was the dominate one of the two. I remember vividly being mashed into the seat through 2nd gear,it was really awesome. Even now,if I had my choice of either one,as much as I love the old GM hotrods,Id have to take the Boss. Ford didnt impress me much in the day,it was a rarity to even find one with a factory 4barrel,let alone a 4 speed transmission. There were a few exceptions,but I can assure you,Chevy and Mopar ruled the 60's and early 70's

Just about every Ford V8 back in the day came with a 4 barrel unless you got a base model V8. There was a difference between the 2. 351C 2V's had better street heads and a 2 barrel, 351C 4V had the gigantic race heads and a 4 barrel. 302's came in either 2 or 4 with the same heads. The big blocks where were Ford shined for a while , but the 351C was something special. There's a reason why people still call it a big block even though it wasn't. I have seen it outrun 455's etc.

Just about all over them came with 4 speeds if ordered, as well as 4 barrels. I find that hard to believe it was a rarity back then.

the only Ford that routinely came with 4 barrels were Lincolns and thunderbirds and dump trucks,you could look under the hood of about every mustang,torino,galaxie,etc,2barrel,try to find a ford top loader,trust me,I lived it.You wouldnt find a 302 4 barrel in anything,most of em were 2barrel 3 speeds,and I mean almost everything youd see on the street.and the autolite 4barrel they did ration out,was a pc of junk,even the 351C Torino GTs,majority had 2 barrels. That is why the majority of the Ford cars got blistered by GM and Mopar-The Holley,Rochester,and Carter AFBs and Thermo-quads

Ford never built a big block with a 2 barrel ever. I agree though most 302s are 2 barrels. I have no experience with autolite carbs but I have heard they are on par with Holley.

just depends on what your calling a big block,460 had a 4barrel,but like i said,T-birds,Lincolns,390s-majority-2 barrels,428 maybe,429 for sure,but almost always in a sled that hauled old men and their families around.When i was a teen in the 70s and 80s,you rarely seen a 428 muscle car,just as today,they are put up,rare they were,they existed,they certainly werent mainstream though

a holley ,you can tune to work on anything,try finding something as simple as a jet for an autolite from the day,hahaha,not happening,your misinformed if you think any autolite 4 barrel matches up to a 4 barrel holley,they have been the #1 choice in performance replacement carbs for decades for a reason,tunability
 
Probably because people couldn't afford em haha. The 428 is a hell of a motor.

I find it funny you mention it like this considering the fact a lot of my close famiy grew up with it and say it was the exact opposite of what your saying lol.

I mean performance wise. But I always have been a Holley guy.
 
All I can say is,sometimes people are misinformed,or just prejudice in their reasoning,the facts are there. Ive had the misfortune of working on the scrap,Q-jets,some people swear by em,I think they are junk,Carter,the same,but I wouldnt have one. All the FE Ford engines were stump pullers,no question.There was just no middle of the road with Ford back then,you either ordered your car with hi-perf options,or you remained in mediocrity
 
I agree on the Quadra junks. Never liked those steaming piles of poo. Carter's are ok but only for low performance applications in my opinion. Like 1 barrel six bangers etc.

FE Fords are just plain nasty motors. Ain't nothing sound like a FE.


My dad grew up in the 70s and 80s and most of his friends aren't Ford so maybe there is a bit of truth to it but most of my family said Ford and Mopar were the dominant forces and Chevy was close behind. Said the Chevys were underdogs most of the 70s.

Who knows. Ford and Chevy got the upper hand right now (2014) though.

In the muscle car heyday, a 4 barrel from Ford was a $162.00 option,most likely the reason why there werent as many installed

On the small block cars. It wasnt exactly a tough change to make but really that price sounds pretty standard for an intake and carb, If not cheaper than converting a car to that today. Some Fords had factory Holleys and like I said no big block left without one.

lol, we should have some good brand wars between the three of us. I'm die-hard Mopar from my dad's side of the family. Sadly, I haven't had any besides a couple old trucks. An '85 D250 /6 with 376k when my friend bought it then ran it out of oil (original rings) and locked up the engine. Then I had an '87 D150 318 that I put a Weiand intake manifold, holley 4bbl, and Hughes "Muscle car" cam in. Got everything ready to go and the damn thing bent a pushrod. I had an '04 stang while this went on, so I took the new parts off the truck and scrapped it (wish I didn't). I got 19mpg from the bottom of AL driving up to Norfolk, VA and that included doing 90+mph all the way (with the 318 and a lowly 2bbl..what 145hp new!? lol)
 
I had to share a few of my favorite 1/18th scale die-casts.That Grumpys Camaro is my favorite,as well as being autographed by Grumpy himself at the 2001 U.S. Nats in Indy,these are exact detail replicas,that old Thunderbbolt even has keys hanging in the ignition!

Hi end hobby shops for the good ones,they average $125.00 a piece,that autographed "Grumpy's Toy" will fetch around $600.00 now,but I wouldnt sell it,Grumpy is my most admired engine builder of all time! 10,000 rpm small-blocks began with him. I missed Ronnie Sox the last year he was at the Nats,he died the following year,or that Cuda would be blessed with his signature as well.

There's a guy on YouTube that worked for Ford in the '80s and got blueprints for a 302, and by himself he machined one to a 1/3 scale of the real thing, and it actually ran. Then he made a T5 to put behind it. Only makes like 6-7 horsepower, but it's so cool that it actually runs.

Those dang thing are awesome arent they? You see the supercharged one that the guys starts with an electric drill?

Yeah there are several of them and some are tiny! I want to know how they got them to run. I mean considering all your various measurements you need to take into consideration like valve lash and piston to valve clearance etc. not to mention overall timing etc. and its crazy because they actually sound like V8s.

I don't know much about the years this was done, but I remember reading something about Mopar engineers revving some engines up to some crazy numbers, like 14k rpm crazy. I'm pretty sure it was some type of 318, and it was either online, or in my auto-tech class that I read about it. I think it might have either been a poly engine, or testing on plastic blocks (this was around '07 or '08 I read it, so I don't remember much about it, and google isn't helping me tonight.)
 
Grumpy brought the smallblock Chevy into the limelight in 1971,when he dominated Pro-Stock with a 331c.i. smallblock Chevy Vega,destroying Hemi's routinely,on the way to his 1st Pro-Stock Championship,nothing has been the same since.
 
I enjoyed the debates and sharing of the HotRods men,now I gotta work on my Madden25 gameplan on PS4,got a big game against my son coming up,havent beaten the dirtbag since 2002...
