Red-Line Chapter 12 : Don't Go Past the Redline
I began to think that there's something unusual about that car. "Wonder who that is," I asked myself.
Tomorrow came, and after the races, we were allowed to run for time attacks. Kairi decided that Kyosuke should go first. He hopped in on Kyosuke's car to give him tips on how to tackle this course so that he could create a course record that is hard to beat. I personally think that he wants to see how much he has improved, maybe THAT is the real reason.
"Try to brake a bit more and make the turn-in earlier."
"Don't gain too much speed in here, or else you will have to brake hard and slow down too much on the following esses."
-"Yes, Kagiyama-san."
"Go full out after the last hairpin."
They came back, and Kairi got out of Kyosuke's car.
"Remember all that I have taught you. Just be calm and stay focused. You have two laps."
-"Hai, Kagiyama-san."
Kyosuke drove again to make the course record, and Yamato was to record the times. After passing us for the first lap, Yamato hit the split timer button in the stop watch. "Impressive," he said. I was getting a bit nervous, because I will go next. Kyosuke came back after the second lap, and Kairi went to him.
"That was a great run, Kyosuke. Well done."
-"Arigato, Kagiyama-san."
Kairi then looks at me, "Akawa-san, it's your turn."
-"Yes, Kagiyama-san."
So I fired up my Civic and Kairi hopped in. Off we go.
"Never let off the throttle here on this steep uphill section. Watch your tachometer and shift points."
"Ease a little on the throttle. After this corner try to upshift a bit earlier."
"Keep your throttle steady. Be a little bit quicker when changing gears."
After giving me advice, We went back. As Kairi was to exit my car, he said, "Wait right here, Tori." Then he called Kyosuke.
"Kyosuke, Tori needs a little help."
-"Why, Kagiyama-san??"
"He's going past the redline. He lets the needle hit the redzone."
-"WHAT? Wait a minute, that's..."
"Yes, a serious problem."
-"I understand. I will talk to him right now."
Kyosuke came to me, "Tori, are you letting you tachometer needle hit the redzone?"
-"Yes, Kyosuke-san. Why??"
"
No wonder you're so fast...Listen, don't let the needle hit the redzone again."
-"Why?? Is it bad?"
"Yes it is. It will kill your engine."
-"WHAT??"
"Look, when you go past the redline always, you won't immediately notice anything different. However, the effects of that are long-term. If you're hitting the redzone every time, your engine will wear out gradually, therefore its performance diminishes. Still continue to do that, and you will have a blown engine. When that happens, you can kiss your Spoon Civic goodbye."
-"No!" That reminded me of the advice Kairi was giving me for the time attack.
"Watch your tachometer and shift points."
"Try to upshift a bit earlier."
"Be a little bit quicker when changing gears."
-"I'll never use the redzone again! Thank you, Kyosuke-san."
"Remember, don't go past the redline, ever again."
-"I will keep that in mind. Arigato, Kyosuke-san."
I nearly cried as I then knew what would happen to my beloved Spoon Civic if I would continue to hit past the redline. As I was doing the time attack, I kept a very close eye on the tachometer.
"Kairi, after this, where would we go next?"
-"Hmm, that Renault Kyosuke raced against yesterday gave me an idea. Yamato, how about France?"
-"That would be a great idea. France it is."
*the next day*
It was goodbye to Italy, as we got on the plane to our next destination:
France. Kairi decided that we were to go to Northern France, to see the beautiful summit of Mont Blanc. I thought, snow would be a great idea to cool off from the sun's heat back in the port town. But still, my mind won't get off of that white Impreza wagon I saw back then...
After checking in at the ski resort hotel, I and Kyosuke wanted to go take a drive on the roads and go around town. But Kairi said no, as it was getting late, and the sun is coming down sooner or later. "You two also need rest, tomorrow I will let you drive around." Tomorrow came, and Kyosuke woke me up, "Come on Tori, wake up! Hurry and take a shower, then come down so that you could eat breakfast! We still have to go around town, remember?"
-"...ah. .huh....Hai, Kyosuke-san."
I hurried my shower, dressed up and went down to the dining area in the hotel. We hurriedly ate breakfast, after that Kairi said, "You two said you want to drive around town, right? Be careful out there."
-"Yes, Kagiyama-san."
-"Yes, Kagiyama-san."
"Tori, do you mind if we use your Civic?"
-"Uh sure Kyosuke, it's fine."
So we drove around town, the place was beautiful. At the right, snow covered the trees near the edges of the road. At the left was a river crystal clear. It wasn't frozen, it flows freely. I was a bit mesmerized, I have never seen anything like it. Yet it looked....peaceful.
As we continued driving, we spotted something on the side of the road. A car, a white car. "Stop right here." Kyosuke said.
We looked closely at the car. It was an old model Toyota Celica. Funny, and odd at the same time, because we wouldn't expect a car like this to be around here. We decided to check it out.
As we walked towards the car, we saw someone behind. It was a girl. A girl about the same height as mine, with long brown hair being blown gently by the wind. She was facing the river. As she noticed our presence, she looked at us and when I saw her face, my God was she beautiful. Her skin was almost as white as snow, her physique was just normal, not too thin. Time froze for me for a split second there. I was, how do you call this, "lovestruck".
As she faced us, she smiled. Man, I was sweating cold, I couldn't resist looking at her cute face! Then she spoke gently, "Very peaceful out here, don't you agree?"
I quickly said, "Yes.....I..I agree."
She smiled again. Oh my God!! I was warming up, I didn't notice the cold atmosphere around at all!
"You two don't look familiar. You're not from town, are you?
Kyosuke replied, "Yes, we are. You don't look like you're from around here, either."
"Yes I am. But I do live here. I'm from Finland. How about you two?"
I answered, "We're from Japan."
"Oh I see. What brought you here?"
-"We're tourists, we wanted to visit this place."
"Hmmm..,(she looks at my car) Judging by what you're driving, you don't seem to be ordinary tourists."
There goes our cover......again.
Kyosuke spoke, "Guess there's no point in hiding anymore. Tori??"
-"Hai." I turned to the girl, "We are race drivers, we have a team and are challenging other racers around the world. We aim to become one of the best."
"Wow, very ambitious goal you have," she smiled and chuckled.
Dang, I'm about to reach boiling point, was I steaming when I hear her voice! An angel was sent from the heavens above....
"So, you are to challenge any racer you encounter?"
-"Yes," I said.
"I see. Me and my Celica haven't had any runs for quite some time now."
Just from what she said, we immediately suspected. She...no, my angel was a racer. Wait, SHE'S A RACER??!!
Kyosuke spoke, "Very well then, we challenge you to a race."
She looked at my car again, for a moment. It seems like she was observing something. "No, I refuse."
I replied, "Why??"
"Not with those tires, you aren't racing or going anywhere around here."
-"What's wrong with my tires??"
"Nothing, except that you shouldn't be allowed to drive around here using those."
-"Why is that??"
"As you can see, snow is everywhere around here. Accidents are quite often, because the asphalt is slippery. You have to visit the local tire factory to get a set of these tires suitable for this kind of surface." She points at her car.
"They don't only work on icy asphalt, but on snow, too. Better hurry, strict rules are being enforced around in this town to avoid accidents."
-"I see, thank you for informing us."
"No problem." She smiled again. Damn, I feel like an arrow was shot hitting me in the heart!
As she smiled, we saw a police car stop near us. The officer got off and went to us.
"Zinaida, your dad has been looking all over for you. He's waiting at the police station."
-"I'll be there in a minute. I just needed some peace and quiet."
"You're lucky your dad and I are friends. If we weren't, I wouldn't be talking to you in a friendly manner. (He looks at me and Kyosuke) Who's your new friends??"
-"Oh, I just met them. They're tourists." (She winks at us)
The officer looks at my car, "May I ask whose car is that?"
I answered, "Mine."
"Sir, I'm gonna have to ask you to come with me. I'll escort you to the local tire factory and then you have to swap your tires there. With what you have right now, you're prone to an accident."
-"Yes, please lead us there."
"I will. (turns at the girl) Zinaida, you do know how to make your way to the police station, don't you? I still have to escort these people to the tire factory."
-"Yes I do."
"Don't you go wandering off elsewhere again without your daddy's permission."
-"I won't."
He gasps, "Well then. (turns to me) Sir, shall we get going?" The officer returns to his vehicle.
As we were leaving, the girl called to my attention.
"Wait! I haven't asked you your name yet."
-"I'm Tori, Tori Akawa. This is my friend Kyosuke Maiyuki."
"So, your name is Tori....I'm Zinaida, Zinaida Kalina. I'm glad I met you. Let's meet again tomorrow, here in this same place. Until then, take care!" Then she got on to her car and left.
When I heard her voice again, I felt like I was in heaven. "Hey Tori, the police officer still has to escort us to the tire factory. We better hurry, I'll call Kagiyama-san while we're on our way."
"...wha...uh...Right, we still have to get the required set of tires."
As we hopped in and drove, we followed the police car. While on the way, Kyosuke phoned Kairi that we were going to the local tire factory and that he should also go there to meet us and of course, pay for the tires. Meanwhile, I couldn't stop thinking about the girl I just met.
"Zinaida.....Zinaida...........she's an angel..........I must meet her again!"
