In the sand dunes near Den Helder in the Netherlands the remains of an English soldier who died in 1799 were found earlier this year
The soldier was found at a work site on a nature project in the dunes of Den Helder.
According to the province of North Holland it is about "one of the most valuable finds from the time of Napoleon".

The find was kept secret for prying eyes at bay.

The dunes near Den Helder were the grounds where a battle was fought between a British invasion force and the French rulers, who wanted to oust the British.

Besides the remains there were also weapons and other paraphernalia of the soldier found.

The fallen soldier was part of the Coldstream Guards, the famous guards of Buckingham Palace.
This can be deduced from the remains of his uniform with fur cap.

The uniform is being recreated and unveiled Friday at Den Helder.

And now I'm standing on the grave of a soldier that died in 1799
And the day he died it was a birthday
And I noticed it was mine.
And my head didn't know just who I was
And I went spinning back in time.
And I am high upon the altar
High upon the altar, high.

I'm flying in Winchester cathedral,
It's hard enough to drink the wine.
The air inside just hangs in delusion,
But given time,
I'll be fine.

...the remains of an English soldier who died in 1799 were found earlier this year...

...or "next on When Reenactment Societies Go Wrong..."

Jokes aside, that is fascinating. I'll have to dig up more on it (no pun intended). :)

I think they mean 'British soldier', not English.

Edit: Unless of course they actually know the soldier was English.

Very true. My great grandfather was a Coldstream Guard and he was Scottish.

A very interesting find though. I'd be interested to find out more once the secrecy has been lifted.

Another British soldier found in the Netherlands.

Dutch website.

Somebody found the body with a metal detector. Actually he found handgrenades, which were on top of the body.

The authorities suspect he was part of a squadron of soldiers who jumped out of a plane september 18th 1944.

Edit.

He was found on the Ginkelse heide at Ede, near Arnhem.
