Dude, you better evacuate. It's now a Category 5 with sustained winds of 165 MPH and gusts up to 185 MPH.

If I were you, I'd get the heck out of there.
I agree and it will get stronger than that.

Ram-Rod. If they say stay then stay. But I have a feeling they'll be doing a big mistake...

Kenny, the news said for my place to stay put. The advised us not to leave. And no, im not an idiot.

Work through this one with me. Don't roll your eyes and skip to the end, because this is actually interesting.

Imagine the kind of damage that would occur if, say, a Boeing 747-400 fell onto your house. It'd be pretty severe. I don't think even the foundations would survive, though if you had any soft, cuddly toys or dolls one of them might make it.

Rita, last I heard, has average wind speeds of 185mph and peak speeds of 215mph. Rita's average windspeed is sufficient that, if a 747 were parked, tethered on a runway facing into the wind, it would take off vertically. Now, imagine again the damage that would occur if a 747 landed on your house, and imagine the damage that would occur if a hurricane capable of picking one clean off the ground hit your house.

If Hurricane Rita even looks at Houston, get the hell out.

If people that have to evacuate feel that this would be a nice time for them to take a little holiday in the Netherlands, give me a shout, and you can stay over at my place for a while near Amsterdam. :D I'm not a lot at home myself lately and have a fair bit of space.

I also have a good internet and digital tv with some U.S. networks, so you can keep in touch.

ha!... I was watching the news and I saw some surfers still in Galveston. They're just begging to die. As for myself, I've heard that there going to initiate a plan to reduce traffic at around 10 AM here, so I might leave. All I can say is that houston is no longer the 4th largest city in the US. :dopey: .... :guilty:

Fox news just reported that the storm surge could be as high as 50 ft. The speed of cars getting out was reported to be 2 mph. Run for your life! Seriously, if you live anywhere near Houston, you need to find a way out of town ASAP. Hurry.

I don't have a ride at the moment and my family is stubborn. I have no option but to stay until I get conformation from them that we're leaving. :indiff:

I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. Good luck.

Here in San Antonio I've heard were ready for the next round of refugees to hit us. On a side note the storm has changed course just a little and its heading more towards Houston/Galveston area then Corpus Christi area. We are hearing that here in S.A. we are going to be expecting 30-40 mph winds and about 2 inch of rain when it hits.

I feel particularly sorry for those who had to evacuate from NO to Houston, and now have to move again.

Not me. Houston was a bad place to settle down if you're worried about hurricanes. It's better than NO, but if I had been in NO I'd have moved to North Dakota.

I think he is referring to those who were essentially put on a bus and not given a choice of destinations. Houston has kind of been the hub for sending refugees elsewhere. A lot of people are just there trying to reconnect with family before moving on.

Besides, considering the Superdome conditions they probably just wanted out and were worried about where later. I figure very few of them were looking at Houston as a final stop.

With luck this one-two strike will make them reconsider moving back to NO.

just deal with it, its pointless to argue with me. Face it, im not leaving, its my decision. So deal with it. IM NOT LEAVING, PERIOD

Who's arguing? I'm advising.

I'll remind you that:
  • The highest ever recorded windspeed (discounting tornadoes) on this planet is 231mph, atop Mount Washington, and Rita is only 16mph slower in gusts.
  • The takeoff speed of a fully-loaded 747-400 is 180mph, meaning that Rita can pick it straight up off the ground.
  • According to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane classification scale, a category 5 hurricane will cause "Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away. Flooding causes major damage to lower floors of all structures near the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas may be required."
  • Rita is currently 20mph on average quicker than an entry-level Category 5, which is enough for its OWN category...
  • If the storm is still Category 5, or even a fast Category 4, and strikes Galveston, that city will, according to current projections, cease to exist.
  • Lastly, we've already seen what can happen when a Category 4 hits land this year:

Now again, it's entirely your choice to stay. No-one would deny you that choice. But, with all the information you have, if Rita moves towards Houston then kenny's assessment is 100% accurate.

All we can say is "Please leave" and, if you don't, "Good luck".

It's an interesting decision - to put yourself at unnecessary risk. I don't see why you would want to do that, but at least if you get killed we'll all remember that it was "your decision".

As Famine said, we're advising you, not arguing. Rita just dropped down to a Category 4, but that's a very strong 4.

I'm not saying you're an idiot or anything, but what you are doing is bold, and more describingly, foolish and dumb.

If you still decide to stay, I'll pray for you, but you're still doing something foolish.

It's not his choice anyways.

We are estimating landfall between Freeport and Port Arthur close to daybreak Saturday, probably as a category 4 hurricane. After Rita makes landfall, it will slow its forward movement and may stall across northern Texas causing catastrophic flooding. We expect hurricane-force winds to spread over a large area of eastern Texas after landfall. In fact, high-rise buildings in the Houston area could experience wind gusts to over 100 mph. This will cause windows to shatter. In addition to possible damaging hurricane-force winds, tornadoes might be spawned by the cyclonic rotation from Rita mainly east and northeast of the center of circulation. Storm surge of as high as 20-25 feet is possible along the coast near and to the right of landfall.

They say there's some very warm water along the Texas coast, which will give Rita a bit of a boost as it chews it's way inland...

RamRod Galveston will be completely submerged if Rita continues it's Cat 5 status, may god be with you I guess.

This is a serious situation that should not be taken jokingly. With all the traffic jammed up on the highways to leave the city you could load up a back pack and outrun them. Then again your parents are gonna drag your behind where they want you to.

AH! There was a nasty little gas rumor spread here, and About 3/4 of Mineral Well's stations are empty. The only place with a lot left is Wal Mart, but The lines are backed up all the way to the highway. It sucks, I can't fill my tank.... Which means, when I have to fill up I will probably end up paying 3-4 dollars a gallon. :scared:

That gas situation is a pain for those leaving. When I look at the news and see all the cars just parked on the highway I'm wondering if they have their cars running or not. I'd have some friends with me pushing the car down the highway seeing how gas stations are being cleaned out(to save my oh-so precious, overpriced gas).

We pay almost £1 per litre here in UK which is roughly £3.7 for a gallon, which is roughly $6.6 a gallon with you guys. And we do that every week, so quit complaining :P

Yes, It is a good thing, but bad for me, The governer has made Gas stations where all the cars are jammed up in first priority. Which I hope will help get those people to safety. Especially when Some of my family is there too :indiff:

You might be used to having the gas priced that high, but I'm not. I don't know what's the highest the gas has been priced in the U.S. and for how long but you sir are getting ganked at the gas station.
