Well, I tihnk its about time one of us posted here about our race so here goes:

jjaisli vs. Ardius
Firstly, we attempted some standing start practice and it seemed a bit too much effort just to make it fair so we decided to run with a rolling start.

The race started with jjaisli in front, and for the 1st lap he did well to hold me back, even blocking onto the grass at one point! Eventually I got a good exit out Correntaio and got alongside on the approach to Bucine. A split-second later braking from me and I had made my move on jj and taken the lead.
From then on jj made a fair few mistakes behind me that left him around 5 seconds back for the rest of the race giving me ample space for mistakes that I did make. He eventually ended up 20 seconds back after a big off on the last lap I believe, its a shame really because I felt he could have put up a far better fight with more practice before the race with this car and track. Even so, a great battle on the first lap and I really enjoyed racing again later on especially at Spa.

Thanks a lot to jjaisli for the great sportsmanship and don't take it too hard, I think you can do a lot better at the right time. 👍 I'm extremely happy for mananging to keep it together for the race so personally a great victory for my mind. :)

 Hey, that wasn't blocking. It was called desperately trying to stay in control. :embarrassed: I like Mugello but for whatever reason with that car and track combo, I was really struggling to put in a clean lap, let alone a decent time. Even during our 'friendly' re-match after the race I was making some silly mistakes. I finally took some solace after the Spa race and felt the car was finally 'coming' to me.

I don't mind losing but I'm afraid I offered a rather weak performance and that's what really frustrates me. You clearly deserved the win posting both a faster lap and a more consitent laps. 👍 Well done.

And thanks for posting this. I've been a little short on time all week and wasn't particularly motivated to do a recap. ;)

Thanks Ardius for the nice writeup, since I'm usually a "late-night-racer" I meet jjaisli very often and I know his great sportsmanship in racing. Congratulations on your win, you've earned your "ticket" to Round Two! 👍

Lets do NO AIDS AT ALL including Automatic Transmissions.

No thanks, I find it difficult enough using my pad, I don't need a restriction on transmissions otherwise I'll need to change the control layout which I don't want to do either. I also don't see why automatic is a problem for anyone, its actually more of a disadvantage because you have less control over the car and besides, the amount of times this crowd will mis-shift is very low.

hello ,
congratulations to Host_killer for the victory, good competition 👍
I apologize me with him but me I don't speak English (use a translator to write)and I have had problems with the headphone today .

good luck to all the qualified!!👍👍

ciao:)

Ardius,

I respectfully disagree. I find when racing these older cars especially, you can easily miss a gear shift. And with a decided advantage in braking to the controller, I would like to see the field leveled a little more...

Not trying to start a squabble, just an opinion.

Cheers,
Host_Killer

Well, I'm not necessarily taking a stand one way or the other on automatic vs manual. But I will say, in this, Host Killer is correct.

I use a G25 and the H-pattern shifter (at least with the cars that in reality have such a transmission). There are many turns in Mugello where I felt the revs were dropping a little too low in 3rd and attempted to shift to 2nd. Many of them ARE legitimate 2nd gear corners in the 348. At least near the apex. But the artificial rev-matching that occurs in this game tends to over-rev the engine during downshifts (and simulated clutch slip over-revs on up-shifts). The result is the transmission just cracks and rumbles and does nothing and at the same time the rear end becomes rather unstable. But it catches you off guard and the only choices are to quickly shift back up to 3rd (by which time the revs really are too low) or wait until the car slows down to where it does accept the gear (which results in massive oversteer if you're in mid corner and on the throttle). In either scenario, not only do you lose time and momentum but you may end up taking a horribly wrong line both through and out of the corner.

In general, I don't mind this behavior because I think it makes it rather challenging. And I have no qualms about my own race. Ardius was simply quicker and fully deserved the win. But I'll leave it up to the winners and race organizer to debate the situation for the remaining events.

Cheers,

I am glad someone else is having those issues... The F40 doesn't give you as much trouble, but you can't just race into a corner and run thru the gears. If you down shift too quickly it will miss a gear then you've carried too much speed into that corner.

Auto shifting you NEVER miss a gear... MAYBE it shifts down a gear more than you would like but you may lose a tenth of a second vs. missing that gear you slide into the grass and lose a half a day.

Then I won't be racing because I don't have the time to practice using a completely different layout of controller nor do I have the money or the space for a wheel.

It's clearly stated in the rules that automatic transmission isn't considered an assist and that's how it will remain. This rule is a "core" rule, because it pretty much defines who will decide to apply for a event and who decides to skip it. I know many people that, like myself, when they play with the pad they always choose AT. In my case, just because I never "mastered" the use of another pair of fingers to allow me to decide when to shift gears.

My personal experience is this. When I play with the pad, I always do it with AT, when I play with the wheel, I always do it with MT. So far, my experience is that with MT I'm always faster, because I have greater control over the car.

So, MT or AT will be kept optional for every player. If any of the wheel players, like myself, feel they can gain time by choosing AT (I really doubt that) just do it.

EDIT: Congratulations host_killer! Pino-r, wish you better luck next time :)

Meanwhile, I got a PM from Jason (GTP_Energiya) and it seems he lost his race against pauljw1983. Congrats Paul, Jason isn't a slow driver so I guess that race must have been a very fast-paced one.

Jason, as I see it, the laptime you have on the leaderboards will probably grant you access to Round 2 also, so keep tuned 👍

OK. First a big shout-out to my homeboy, Mario, who managed to hunt around & come up as opponent for me, an unknown FC racer, who turns out to be known in Sim circles as Piotr the Polish Punisher, & who within a few hours is posting the fastest times yet seen on the Ferrari Challenge leaderboards. 👍 (:grumpy:)

I asked PiotrB to agree to a series of three five minute races rather than one 10 minute race, because with my @#%$! wheel problem, after more than 3 or 4 laps my G25 is almost impossible to race with.

In the first race, PiotrB started in first & Biggles (SimcoeAce) made an unforced error early in the race which allowed Piotr to pull away to a 7 second lead. Unfortunately/fortunately, PiotrB got disconnected during the last lap which led to a restart.

The restarted race went pretty smoothly with Piotr starting in the lead & gradually building on that lead to finish about 4 seconds ahead clocking a fast lap in the mid 2.02 range.

The second race took a similar course with Piotr squeezing past Biggles & then gradually pulling away to a 2 second lead. In the third lap, Piotr slowed down allowing Biggles to overtake, but Piotr had little difficulty in overtaking again on the home straight of the third lap & again pulling away on the final lap to finish a comfortable second ahead. Piotr again posted a fast lap in the mid 2.02s, while Biggles turned in a 2.04 dead. When asked why he had slowed down on the third lap, PiotrB responded that he wanted to "check out the lag".

With PiotrB obviously demoralised & struggling, Biggles started the third race full of hope: perhaps PiotrB would stop to chat with the pit girls, wash his windshield, or pick a piece of gum off his tires, opening the possibility of a third race upset victory. Biggles started in first & drove consistently, holding off PiotrB until the later stages in the race, but, inevitably, the Punisher slipped past for the win. Biggles finally recorded a respectable 2.03.6 fast lap time, with PiotrB recording his "slowest" fast lap time, in the high 2.02s.

Congrats to PiotrB.

You guys had better look out! :mischievous:

This was the funniest writeup I have ever read in any gtplanet event!

As for "Piotr the Polish Punisher" :D I can only say that maybe one month ago I found Piotr lingering, like me, in the codemasters forums, quite downhearted because a game series we both used to love (TRD) went downhill with the pile of ... junk ... that is GRID. We exchanged a few PMs and we spoke about FC being the only PS3 game that can (barely) satisfy online racers (apart from GT5P, but random matching, 2 or 3 interesting tracks ... well, you know the rest).

So, I was quite happy when later he told me that he had FC already, and inviting him for this event was only natural. 👍

So, congrats Piotr, from what Biggles tells us you did some impressive racing and truly earned your ticket to Round 2.

Biggles, now take the free time you may have to get yourself a new wheel! 5 minutes racing is for girls! :D

Biggles thank you very much for a series of excellent races ! The thing is that I was just lucky because Biggles have problems with his wheel. That for sure hurt his lap times and consistency. Also he was step by step improving his pace. So in our final race he was giving me a solid challenge. Also I've seen great clean racing. So definetly "GTP" tag next to his name means that we racing with mature racer who know how to race fast and fair.

Yeah, that's it, you were LUCKY! ;)

Actually, Piotr was pretty consistently running half a second to one second a lap faster than the FASTEST times I have EVER managed to run with this car -really nothing to do with the wheel.

(yes, I admit I AM a "mature" racer. :D)

I WAS a bit shaky in the first two races because I had just run a couple of online races with the 355 Challenge. The 348 is very similar to the 355 but with slightly different braking & (of course) gear shift points & a little less tight in the cornering. It took me a few laps to adjust to the line of the 348.

Anyway, it's nice to have you (and pauljw1983) on board - it should lead to some faster racing in the coming weeks. Perhaps we can get ukog-dyer & some of the other fast UK racers involved too. 👍

👍 Biggles! very funny. (Perhaps you should have tried singing after all!) ;)

So you, me, Energiya and Mario running at 20:1 odds to be out in the first round...well...one just has to appreciate the irony.

Congratulations to Host_Killer and PiotrB! Well done.

Hopefully we'll qualify for the ROG event - Race of Geriatrics - (not Jason)!

I'm going to have to withdraw. Was meant to race last night but had my friends connection fail me. No chance of me getting to race tonight so I'm going to have to withdraw and hand the win to GTP_Graffen. He would've smashed me anyway as I was only lapping at around 2'05.

hi mario
if you are free i be on fc in half an hour.then we finaly can do our race.are we doing standing starts?

Sorry, I woke up early to watch the GP and then fell aslep again. I'll be at home during the afternoon, and I will be available to race. From 15:00 GMT onwards I'll check if you are online every hour until the deadline.

EDIT: So, our race was finally done. We met this afternoon and decided to do a "warm up" 5 minutes race. In that race I took off from the grid a bit better than mhm and, even if I ended up winning, I couldn't help but to notice that mhm was capable of faster laps than myself.

After that one we started what I thought was the real race but it happened that mhm (hosting) forgot to change the race length to 10 minutes. I was glad because after 3 laps he was in front by about 3 seconds :dopey:

And then ... we did THE race! This time it was mhm who took off from the grid better (a lot better, wheelspin cost me about 1,5 seconds by teh end of the straight) and from that moment on he started to slowly build a gap that reached about 4 seconds with two laps to finish. Neither of us did any serious mistake, so (again) he was simply faster in almost all sections of the track (I recovered a litle here and there, but overall I was losing time). Then, in the penultimate lap, the gap started to slowly decrease and I thought "hmm, either the pressure is getting to him or he is jus taking it easy to the finish line" ... maybe it was a mix of both, but either way mhm66 got his car safe to the finish line, with the gap between us decreasing to about 2 seconds. For you guys to get an idea of our "race-pace", only thing I could tell you is that, after lap 1, all my laps were made in the 2:03's, with a best time of 2:03,05. I'm not sure about mhm's best lap, but it was surely in the 2:02's.

In all, a very enjoyable experience, aganst a very good and very consistent driver. mhm66, I wish you the best of luck to Round 2! 👍

You never know what's going to happen in a race :) I hope you can take part in future events 👍

meanwhile, I got the race result from holy sword and GTP_Fairplay_plz, the race was won by GTP_Fairplay_plz. Well done, hope you both had fun doing this.

This all gives us two more racers for round two (GTP_Graffen and GTP_Fairplay_plz). However, with a litle less than 90 minutes for the deadline I keep missing any result from Hereward vs. RSRacer and Zedux vs. Lofasz. I sure hope you guys don't forget to send me a PSN PM about your race result ...

I"ll definetely take part in future events. I think this game is awesome. Much much harder than GT5P. It feels weird not being one of the fastest and being the slowest. I play FC purely for fun, I play GT5P a lot more competitively.

I am still missing info from:

Hereward vs RSRacer

and

Zedux vs. GTP_Lofasz

I have sent a PM to all these players. Will wait for a reply until tonight by midnight.

And after midnight I will post the final list of players for round two (with or without those race results, with or without replies from any or some of those four players).

Sorry for the inconvenience to all concerned. Anyway, you have the Round Two details posted so you guys start practising!

You have a very good chance to be in, Jason, if I recall correctly you have a very good best lap posted in the "lap records" leaderboard. I will have to check all of it tonight, so a definite reply will have to wait until then.
