Personally I'd just go for plasti-dip because no matter what it's non-permanent and hey a can of the stuff is only 20 bucks and that'll do 4 wheels (+ a spare if you really push it.)

Otherwise, rattle can + clear for protection works wonders - can't comment on how it holds up to road salt though since it doesn't snow here at all.

I'm not worried at all about road salt, these wheels won't see any of that nasty stuff, these are just for the warm months.

After reading a whole bunch of articles about powdercoat I'm pretty turned off by how it affects wheels, especially cheaper cast wheels like mine, nor do I trust the powdercoaters in the area to do it right so it doesn't weaken the aluminum. Any personal experience?
I have never heard of anyone having problems with powdercoating wheels. Manufactures
I really like plasti dipping stuff, Im going to dip them to test the color, and a few different paint schemes. Thanks for the video, it's a good watch 👍

@Slash The only thing keeping me from going powdercoating is how much wheel manufacturers warn against it, and thats with stronger forged wheels.
EDIT: Let us know what you decide. I don't have much knowledge about the Plasti-dip. I thought they only made dull or matte finish but I guess they also make gloss.

I personally use Plasti-dip because I prefer a matte finish on wheels which is set off nicely with some tyre shine so I can't comment on more permanent methods but MCM did a great video on painting wheels DIY

???

You can get gloss finishes for plasti-dip.. worked pretty well when I experimented with it but I prefer the matte look.

Your original quote is what made me think they only had matte/dull finish in Plasti-dip. I have only seen matte finish Plasti-dip.

That's just because I only use the matte finish plasti-dip since it's what I prefer  sorry if my wording caused any confusion.

Most off the shelf plasti-dip is has a matte finish but there are all sorts of different colours and finishes available.

Actually it looks like the gloss just came out this month.

"COMING SOON (Available February 2014 from your local Autobarn or Autopro Store)"

Wow, that company must be pretty behind.. I've been using it for a while now? there's a whole shelf of gloss plasti-dip at Super Cheap Auto.

Do you have any pictures of how the gloss finish turned out? I saw it online but all the examples looked pretty flat still. If it works I'll use it, I can have the best of both worlds. I'll keep everyone posted too, I'm going to start polishing the lips this weekend.

Not of my own car but it looked similar to this.

It looks similar to a normal gloss paint - however it is still duller than the "real thing" due to the nature of the product.

But hey, it's non-permanent so swings and round abouts - it does mean if you screw up the painting process you're not going to be sanding for an hour

That actually looks really good! I might have to try it out, and being that I'm not the best painter so the idea of being able to redo a screw up within a couple of minutes.

Plasti-dip is a strange substance to work with.. you need to spray it on heavily or it will be hard to get off but you also need to spray it on lightly or you'll get big runs - I found making multiple passes without letting the area dry to work best.

Use wax and grease remover and a wheel brush for removing areas you were too light to just peel it off easily.

I've used it a few times before, I think I'll pick up some glossifier this weekend and give it a shot, it's pretty idiot proof so I'll experiment to get the glossiest effect.
Smal update though: I had the car on the lift and found the winter has put a fist sized hole in the passenger floor, which needs to be fixed soon along with the second exhaust since I've owned the car. I really need to move south, where there's no snow. :(

Good luck with the plasti dip. Let us know how that goes.

Yes winter is brutal on cars especially if you don't take them through the car wash to get the salt off. I go through a local car wash that only cost $5.00 including underbody spray. I try to take my cars through at least once a week during the winter. Otherwise, the salt WILL indeed destroy your car. The car wash also sprays an enormous amount of water everywhere which washes off all the salt from your entire car. The underbody spray is by far the most important in winter climates.

$5 for a car wash? It's $12 here for the cheapest one and $18 for the best one!

Good luck with the plastidip mate, I've experimented with it myself and found that you should buy a can per wheel, just to be on the safe side. Nothing looks worse than having one side's wheels dark gray and the others shiny silver. Trust me, I've been there

So far this year I've had the car to the car wash almost once a week but due to how cold it is they've been spray the roads with a salty solution that just eats everything almost immediately. There's nothing I can do short of parking it now, so I'll do a full damage assesment when it gets a little warmer. I'm hoping I can peel out the carpet and patch it without tracking down a floorpan from a junkyard because they don't make them anywhere. I'm trying the plasti dip tomorrow, but I think I'll just get a paint gun and do it right, still cheaper than getting it done and I get to learn something in the process.

I got my test wheel masked today, I'll be shooting with the plasti dip to see how much I like it tomorrow. The wheel looks simple enough but masking off the little details took forever.

wow its been a little while. Ive become kind of a horder of camaro parts and have an entire garage full. i picked up an entire interior for new seats a while back, ill post it up when more than the seats are done. i got some nice stock taillights to replace the kind of ricey ones as well as a fix to my crooked nose im sure everyone has notice in my pictures. and now to go with my wheels i got an entire dual piston brake setup off a newer camaro to prepare for some summer tracking. all that along with my wheels leaves me with no space at all in my garage for anything else
Anyway here's the new brakes i have to clean up this week and put on this weekend with my wheels.

Yeah be cautious with plastidips....

I saw colour burn ins on certain type of rims already (white)....

Nothing beats a good powdercoat

That sounds a little scary. But I really hate the stock color so whenever I get money they'll be painted anyway, there's just so much I'm in the middle of right now.

Here's a crappy picture of my semi crappy dip job.

i managed to make it a full day with big grippy tires before i shattered the transmission or torque arm mount during a hard 1-2 shift and something tried to come through the floor. So i guess ill have to overnight one to have it done by friday even though i cant decide between rubber or polyurethane.

Those wheels look great on your car. The plasti dip turned out nice. Trans mount is no big deal. You will have that replaced in no time. I personally prefer polyurethane.

I'm ordering a poly one but I have to have one in today because it's my only car, kind of a pain but it could be a lot worse (knock on wood)

Looks fantastic! Now just put some 305's on the ass of that thing!

Thanks guys, and slash no way, I don't know if you've driven on wide low profile tires before like these but I couldnt imagine how bad a 300 plus tire would skip across the road given mine are taking some time to get used to. I might go to 295 though

I did get the trans mount fixed though :) if my jack would've worked I could've got it done in much less than the hour it took. Much smoother now though, hopefully I dont break it before I get a polyurethane one.

You get used to it. My Camaro's summer setup was 275's up front and 315's out back. It's perfectly fine.
