Shooting inside Colorado movie theater during Batman premier

Just heard on the radio that the suspect was a 24-year old medical school dropout. That's creepy, you'd figure it'd be like a veteran with severe PTSD or maybe someone with some mental issues, but that's just weird for me..

How many does a normal theater hold? We have a Regal Grande here in town and I saw Harry Potter on the first day, I would shocked if there were more than 110-120 in the stadium theater, and I'm pretty sure the Regals are the biggest chain.

Most larger cineplexes have theaters that will seat about 200-300 people. Not all rooms are the same size, but the midnight premier was going to be in the largest room available, and probably in about 4-5 more at the same time.

Yeah, I probably go to the movies once a year so I'm not mad that I didn't know that. That's crazy..

most normal people have no clue of this, and would just fire from their position, with lots of unarmed, unprotected individuals surrounding them.

What normal people? One of the most often repeated lines around a gun range is to know what is beyond your target. This was drilled into me when I first started shooting and I was only firing BB guns that couldn't penetrate a rubber mat at the time. Gun owners don't have to be trigger happy bricks. People are aware of what guns can do, and this is one reason why people train to use them correctly.

I was always taught to know what's beyond your target and to always point it in a safe direction. It was POUNDED into my head and we had to go through a training course before they would even give you a permit to go andbuy your hunting licenses.

If guns didn't exist as a way for him to express himself this way, then he would have used whatever was available to the society of the time. The real malady is deeper.

:( How do we stop this? I share the grief of all those hurt and my heart goes out to those parents who lost children.

Don't forget that some people probably have injuries sustained from other victims trying to flee the theater(s). Trampling-type injuries are extremely common in these types of scenarios, where a lot of panicked people are trying to flee through one or two fairly small doors, not to mention the narrow stairways withing the auditorium itself.

THIS part has me very nervous. Hopefully this doesnt happen. It will only set a bad example for other people that attempt to do something like this again. If they shut down the movie, the killer wins.

Warner Bros. considers cancellation of 'The Dark Knight Rises' screenings. Warner Bros., the studio releasing "The Dark Knight Rises," is considering whether to cancel screenings across the country after a massacre took place at a midnight screening in Colorado that left 12 moviegoers dead in the early hours of Friday.

That's exactly what he would want. They do it, he wins. I say everyone should go see it just to spite him.

This was shocking, 71.. like wow. I don't want to go to the movies for a while now.. :(

You're in more danger of getting killed by a diabetic overdose of Maple Syrup in Canada than getting shot by a deranged lunatic.

Now this guy on the other hand, I hope he gets life behind bars minimum, or capital punishment if warranted.

You know his defense is gonna plead insanity.

While I agree to an extent, he will be brought to justice, and dealt with appropriately. Glad to hear CO has death penalties and it will most likely be applied in this case.
Admittedly I am a little behind on the news, saw it this morning when I was leaving work and just getting going for the day. I heard his apartment is extremely booby trapped as well. That should help cancel out any insanity defense.

This guy was probably thinking death by cop, they then go search his apartment and his killing spree continues.

My heart goes out to all those involved.

Not sure what the restrictions are on carrying a gun in the States, so I might be over simplifying this but... if I were to make this analogous to driving a car...

You spend months getting trained, you spend hundreds of £$£ getting trained, you spend £$£$£ on getting a car, and you do it day in day out most of your life... does this mean that everyone with a drivers license is safe behind the wheel?... is every person who owns a gun safe behind the trigger? Or are there licensed idiots that are bright enough to pass the test and are just responsible enough not to get caught until they've done something really stupid..

I'm not making the argument for or against guns for the masses, just trying to get some perspective on it... since we don't have guns or much gun crime to speak of over here.

Stabbings are up over there though. Guns are equalizers, no guns invites well... things like this.

Guns obviously aren't 'equalizers' though, or else things like this wouldn't happen. It's not often you get an individual that takes out a class room full of kids with a knife, or a movie theatre full of Batman fans.

The problem is disarming 99.99% of the population. Because that last 0.01% get guns anyway, and yes then it is very unequal. Leads to situations like this.

Except even if you ban guns, lunatics like this person will still find a way to get a hold of one.

EDIT: Tree'd by Danoff.

I'm confused, the shooter's motive was he didn't wan't anybody to see a Batman movie? :odd:

It has been reported (might be false) that he felt that the movies had a political message and this was his protest against that message.

I think the point was that if we don't go and see the movie (or see any movie really) we let him win because he put fear in our lives by thinking that all movie theaters could be at risk.

I think you're missing the point of terrorism. However, since we don't know his motive, we don't know what he wanted.

Sadder part is that all of the guns were purchased legally. This was planned in advance.

Okay...

Last year some whacko shot a congresswoman in front of a grocery store. Hasn't stopped anyone from buying food.

I think you're missing the point of terrorism. However, since we don't know his motive, we don't know what he wanted.

I'm well aware of what terrorism is, thanks.

Since we don't know what he wanted, how would boycotting movie theaters help?
