It is very warm and I've been out and about in it all day. 30 degrees C, so for the UK that's pretty hot but it's not just heat, it's the humidity too.

So glad I'm off work and on holiday at the moment.

Anyway I've been reading and watching a load of stuff about the Ninebot One personal wheel. And while there are cheaper alternatives out there I've decided to buy one from a UK supllier who is really good and gives a lifetime discount on parts too.

For those who don't know what one looks like...

Should be here in a few days hopefully. Travels about 21kph and for around 25 to 30 kilometres in distance depending on temp, my weight and hillage of the area I'm riding.

Yeah, but it never ceases to scare me how much stuff you need to hump when you're planning on safely surviving a 4-day trip in the mountains. Thats 65 lbs not counting the camera gear and clothing. With my body weight of 220lbs my legs have to carry almost 300 lbs / 136kg up to a place thats 12k ft above sea level, including climbing near vertical cliffs in thin air.

In other words up there I feel like a very fat man with a weak heart on sea level.
My last trip, I was about 275 lbs with a 70 lb pack. I felt like I was going to fall over and squirm around like a turtle a few times.

Now, my trip wasn't 12k ft above sea level, but it was fairly high up. I took the toughest trail in the area. I wish I knew my heart rate at some points, because I could see my chest beating through my shirt at some points.

Didn't help that I was hiking in direct sun..

I will say, we overpacked, my friend and I. You can actually get by hiking/camping with just a few essentials, but it wouldn't be much fun without some emenities.

I've heard about going ultralight, I just don't see how its possible without cutting corners on essential stuff.
Thats what I carry with me, and thats only essential stuff.

Water 6L: 6 Kg (you need more than 5L per day in high alpine regions, and counting on finding springs every half an hour would be a grave mistake)
Compass, phone, TP, lighter, knife, flashlight, map, personal hygiene stuff: 1.5Kg
2-man tent: 3kg (You don't want to sleep in one of those ultralight tents in high alpine regions, trust me in this one)
Sleeping bag: 1Kg
Empty backpack: 2.5kg
Additional clothes, rain gear, poncho, headgear: 1.5Kg
Walking sticks: 0.5Kg
Food for 4 days (1 person): 4kg
Climbing irons + rope: 2.5kg
Camera gear: 3.5kg (Yes, its essential for me)

So here we are at 26kg, thats 57lbs just the essentials. But I'm not going naked, with my boots and all the mountain stuff I have to wear on my body thats another 3.5kg easily. So in the end my ''combat load out'' is around 30kg or 66lbs.
Thats a lot , but I don't see where I could save any significant amount weight. I could probably shave off 2-3 kg off my total load if I went with super expensive super high-tech components gear, but 2kg don't really matter in the grand scheme of things, I lose 2kg if I empty a water bottle.

You don't "invest" in stuff like that in Europe. We don't get this kind of heat nearly enough to justify it. I know nobody who has anything more than a floor fan or desk fan.

Not all of Europe is like that. Over here, heat is very much a problem in most part of the continental territory during this time of year and up until September.
Just last weekend temperatures where I live (just south of Lisbon, and about 12kms from the ocean) reached 40º/41º, and 150kms down south it was already stretching to 44º/45º (roughly 111ºF/113ºF).
And that was still in June. Can't imagine how it would be now in July, and then in August, usually the hottest months. I hate the heat.
I have AC built into my house (was already there as it was being built), and it's a lifesaver for me.

That's what some parts of the UK are getting up to today. Hottest day on record at Wimbledon.

It's not sunny, at all. It's close to a storm at times. It's just extremely humid and not pleasant at all, especially stuck in a thick black shirt.
So, like a sauna? Lovely.

Depends on where in Europe, but you definitely wouldn't pay for a device that only makes the room colder here. Which is why some people here have invested in ASHPs, which can make the house warmer and cooler depending on which is needed.

$$$

The lighter, the more expensive.

I think you could get away with going light for a good two days, any more than that, it'd be pushing.

When and where are you going to be in Wisconsin? I'm heading to Wisconsin Dells on Monday. :)

I'm going to the Tudor race in August.

I also needed a GPS as I'm an expert at getting lost whenever I go downtown.:ouch:

People still buy standalone GPSs? I haven't used one of those in six or seven years.

It's nice as it doesn't tie up your phone and it doesn't use up data.

Plus, I still have an old "dumb" phone and can't bring myself to buy a new one when it works perfectly fine.

Some more random perennials for the yard. Also hung 7 sheets of lattice this week for the vine flowers to climb. Mainly the Morning Glories. Turned out perfect. Been such an enjoyable year just spending money this summer on cosmetic, landscape goodies for the yard. Absolutely love it!! :D

This one I have never understood. You're driving. You shouldn't need your phone free for anything else. Even if you do, music and calls come in without interrupting my GPS. As for data, my wife's Facebook usage accounts for 60% of our data usage. If I'm driving she will use more data than my phone running Waze and streaming music simultaneously.

That is a completely different story. When I bought my last GPS updates cost enough to make me think a smartphone is the better deal. Getting one that provided real-time traffic data cost as much as a smartphone. I see this one has free updates. I wouldn't be surprised to find the pricing has also changed.

I see this one has free updates.
A few years ago my dad was in the market for a GPS. I suggested a Nuvi that included lifetime map updates for, if memory serves, $50 more than the same model without. After looking at how much updates cost, it didn't take any convincing at all before he ordered it. I've updated it for him a handful of times since, all for free and he couldn't be happier. 👍

New pair of shoes. Wanted something in a light colour and, well, didn't have a pair of Superstars since I was 17. Awesome that they're still around almost a decade later.

Got 10% of, too, which is nice.
