Sound may not be as bad as we think!

I would like to say that sounds are not as they would be in real life. Some cars may be close, but there is a peculiar thing PD has done that I will get back to in a moment.

I found this by accident, as I was racing, that A LOT of the cars really do have proper sounds, but only in certain circumstances is there. I was using the Light Car Company Rocket, a very small and low (this is key) car, which is also fast. I had thrown a stage 3 turbo and a custom transmission on it, to keep up to those high powered cars in the A class 500PP races. When you are using more regular sized cars, you won't be able to replicate this as good.

Now, take to the track. In my race, I was at Mount Panorama, with everything between Elises, M3 GTRs, Jaguar XFR (I think), S4s etc. Many cars, both from previous titles and current. Now, as I was driving, with roof cam, I was riding the rear bumper of an NSX, when I heard the godly sound that is proper exhaust notes. I started to go past the field one by one, and get inches off the rear bumper of every car, and each one had the distinctive sound of that car. No vacuum cleaners. Each car was unique, and sounded like the real life counterparts in most of the instances.

This leads me to believe that PD did fix the sounds in one way, but there came another problem in the process. The sounds fade out much too quickly by the distance between the camera and the exhaust itself. Go try it, win the Rocket from the first tier of Goodwood, slap a bit of power and a tranny on it, and go hunt cars down. I tried it with an NSX afterwards, and it proved my initial thought. The nsx was to high (:ouch:), and rival cars was hard to make out.

The odd thing for me, is that chase cams is also affected heavily, so you won't get all that sound from your own car. If there was a patch that reduced exhaust sound dissapation, I do believe that much of the problem is solved!

I have been running the Dino for the most part and have to say it sounds great. I have also noticed that most of the cars I pass all sound pretty good. The biggest thing is that they all sound different for the most part. A lot better to me than FM5. Not perfect but heading in the right direction.

Some of the premiums sound better, some not. I drive a 2003 Focus ST170 in real life, and the in game version (standard) sounds nothing at all like my car, doesn't drive much like it either. Gear ratios are pretty accurate though.

Most life like sounding car is the Red Bull X2011, it sounds as nasty and ear shattering as a real F1 car, it's glorious!

I wonder if their sound engine revamp will make some of these good sounding cars sound even better. The KTM X-Bow is neat, since from the cockpit you can sorta hear intake noise. I love it. Now I just hope that they fix the sounds of racing exhausts and some racing cars... like the Z4 GT3, SLS GT3, and M3/E92 GT2.

I have the car sound setting set to 120, and kept the music at 90. I then bought a GTO and gave it a racing exhaust...sounds great. Nice crackle to it, and the bass comes out nicely. Hoping the Shelby GT500 sounds as nice.

I agree, a lot of the cars I've driven sound nice with the stock exhaust. Especially if u drive the Goodwood festival and rev the cars at the countdown it gives u different angles just before u set off and the cars sound great. I don't know about others but I love
GT6 :gtpflag:.

Improvement to car sound will always be welcome but I'm finding, even in GT5, that a good headphones and headphone amps make a world of difference. For around $60 (even less from Amazon), you can get a decent amp like the FIFO E11 that can drive pretty much any headphones to a decent level and add a nice hump to the lower midrange and upper bass. I'm using mine with the Sony MDR-7506 (the standard studio headphone).

Don't let the photo fool you, it's a small amp (much smaller than a portable HDD):

This x1000. I was grinning from ear to ear for many minutes after hearing the updated sound. Couldn't stop driving it!

I too have noticed that some cars have proper, or at least improved, engine sounds. I would dare say that PD has taken a step in the right direction as far as engine sounds go.

I think the sound has improved a lot over all, I really noticed it when i was driving the Tesla on bathhurst I got a good chance to clearly hear several cars as I came up behind them and while they were near by, a couple of the Audis had a really nice deep note that I could feel in my seat, the Boss 302 sounded pretty good and the V8 Lotus really got my attention. I have noticed also that some of the standard cars from GT4 have improved sounds and at certain rpms some of them sound almost realistic.

Much better than before

IMO the sounds in GT6 are nowhere near as bad as the media and general population make it to be.
They can be heaps better I agree with that but I actually liking some of the sounds.

I use a pair of AKG K701s with a Creative surround headphone amp and GT6 sound set to large theatre. How does it sound? Awesome!

It is impossible to recreate exact engine sounds with a recording because no human hears the exact same sounds, no space has the same caracteristics, a car cockpit has 360 degrees of sound with an enormous amount of reflective surfaces while most people use TV speakers with little to no bass response, hi-fi with smiley eq and no midrange, headphones with terrible sound staging and so on.

The GT series sound is no where close to being a deal breaker. It's great given the right cicumstances.

I will say I bought the FXX and the sounds are very disappointing. I still haven't been able to update my game yet, and by the sounds of the X1 I hope they update it (or maybe have in 1.01). It almost sounds like they are using Enzo placeholder sounds.

Heard the Shelby gt500 '13 with sport exhaust? That thing sounds atrocious. Unfortunately I can't change it as its an AE car:(. Haven't heard it stock yet though. Normally american cars I keep standard exhaust on them as all performance one sound horrible(normally). There are a few that sound BA.

I can't stand how the sound of your car fades when near others. One of the absolute worst "features" brought into GT since GT5. Especially for manual users like myself and many others...

This happens if sound settings are set to "Living room". It compresses and destroys any dynamics in sound. Large theatre is the mode with the least compression and sounds gorgeous when coupled with great speakers or headphones.
