Space In General

Here's one of both that are currently visible from some areas.

And another of PANSTARRS from New Zealand:

You mean the conspiracy fueled theory that somehow, astronomers all over the world have missed an entire planet-sized body in our solar system that was supposed to tear Earth apart in 2003 and then 2012?

Known about what? Mental illness?

Edit: Pretty sure I saw comet PANSTARRS tonight at dusk, but I couldn't watch it for long so not sure if it was a plane. Went back out after dark and it wasn't there. I think as the month goes on it's supposed to get higher in the sky. Would like to get a look at it before it disappears.

I can't believe I've actually missed the news about it. I'd thought it would only be visible to telescope users. But if it's marginally visible to the naked eye, I might drag the kids off to the mountains to watch for it this weekend.

I've never heard of this Nibiru thing, but I followed my curiosity and ... no, I didn't get killed (not a cat, ya know ;) ). Instead it led me to this.

And the whole story reminded me of one of my favourite childhood books. Featuring a possible global destruction of the Earth, a near hit, a maritime expedition, drunken sailors, and especially ... Giant Exploding Mushrooms  :

Every time i post in this thread, there is a smart mouth that just attaches his/her/itself to me like a magnet

Well if you don't want to be insulted then you shouldn't post stupid conspiracies. This thread is about Space and actual scientific things about space, not dumb conspiracy theories which won't happen.

Looked for PANSTARRS last night but it was obstructed by houses and trees. Hopefully it gets higher in the sky as I'd really like to see it before it disappears for a good long time...

Supposed to be right by the moon tonight and tomorrow night. I could see the moon from my place but nothing else. Too many tree's & houses as well.

I spotted Saturn last night with my scope, although it was only a small thingy to see, it was so bright and the rings gives it something really special. And I found out I can still double my magnification, the biggest I have now is 130x and I can go to a logical magnification of 260x. All I need is a 5mm oculair. 👍

Also, taking pictures through the scope without a decent camera stand or something is impossible. I really need a decent mount for my point and shoot. The stuff to use a Dslr with a scope is expensive. Silly expensive.

I tried to spot it last night, but I think it's best visible after it's dropped below the houses and trees in my area. :(

Saturn was my first object through a telescope. It's a wonderful thing to look at, a real wow moment when you first see it.

Mine was Jupiter, as it easy to find for the last couple of months. I was jumping up and down like a kid on Christmas morning, and again the night I spotted Saturn, at 2.30 AM.

Tonight I went for a quickie with a Dslr and a 300mm lens. Just drove 5 minutes out of the city, setup the camera, and started shooting away. I haven't quite got the fine touch yet, but I captured 1 nebula, and 1 slightly out of focus green blob, must be a nebula too.

I learned that an Eos 400D and ISO 1600 doesn't work.

Just published by NASA. Very interesting.

It's interesting how the comet has two tails, the ion tail and the dust tail. I guess some have more (i.e., the "sodium tail" on Hale-Bopp). Comet Holmes had a very spiky, multi-pronged tail. NASA seemed to find interest in the question of the cause of the "wild and ragged striations in the dust tail", putting it down either to irregular outgassing of the core, fragmentation events, or interactions with the solar wind.

Respectfully submitted,
Steve

edit: I doubt it's the solar wind, since although the solar wind is very fast and very hot, it is said to have no more effect that "a baby's breath".
