Is it okay?

If it is okay, when are the times you would need to spank a child; when are the times when you would not spank a child. Why would it be okay to spank the child in the first place?

If it isn't okay, why isn't it okay? If you cannot spank a child for discipline, what would you use for disciplining a child instead of spanking?

GTP, tell me your thoughts...im listening

Different thoughts for different cultures. I've taken a rule of thumb that IF it's done in love, and with consistency, what ever method of discipline you choose should be fine.

well pako (to expand on this) when wouldnt it be fine "what ever method of discipline you choose should be fine" like where do you draw the line as far as physical discipline with a child?

Spanking is a great method of punishment for serious wrongdoings commited by a young child. I was spanked when I was young, and I think it really helped instill respect for authority for me, something kids lack today. It's a shame all the bleeding hearts want to eliminate this form of punishment.

Children should be beaten to within an inch of their lives... Only way they'll learn...

Seriously... I HIGHLY doubt that a slap after a wrong doing will turn someone into Michael Jackson... And I've gotten a few myself...

[edit:] And By FEW, I mean, FEW... I think I can remember me getting smacked 6 times through childhood.. That should account for something like once a year.. So no, I don't think a daily spanking is a healthy way to raise a child.. But then again, what do I know, we don't have any kids.. And the cats don't listen anyway...

Spanking is perfectly fine. It doesn't hurt them but it gets the point accross that the parents are serious. But when a child laughs when you spank them you know it's not working anymore. (I did that to my mother and then she knew spanking wasn't going to work anymore :D )

Obviously she didn't hit you hard enough ;)

Believe me, I NEVER laughed the times it happened !...

I did and my sisters laughed and my mom had a stupid face on because she was trying to hold back the laughter as well.

Pako
a rule of thumb

Funny you should use this phrase...

The phrase derives from times when a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick "no wider than his thumb"...

agree with you totally.

Yeah, it's really sad. Spanking is a GOOD thing. Forget the biblical principles. Just the sheer fact of punishment after disobedience is what children need!

I don't need to say a word cause you just answered this perfectly.

wow...i thought a few people would say "dont you dare think about spanking your child, thats child abuse!"

if everything else fails to discipline a child...well, as the saying goes...no pain no gain for child development

It's far from child abuse. Anyone that thinks that is just ignorant. Or that person was abused as a child and things any kind of painful physical contact is abusive.

I have no major problem with spanking. Next to no physical damage, and it hurts the disciplin...er's hand too, so it's not like the person doing the spanking could take pleasure from it. *ahem*

Overall, if it's done only as a consequance for the kid doing something bad more than once, I say it's ok. But only by parents and relatives. I'd hate having a teacher physically discipline me in any way, and little kids generally feel that way as well.

Of course, you have the dip**** kids who later absolutely HATE their parents for just one spanking. My sister was spanked only once or twice in her lifetime and she deserved it each time. My bro and I have both been slapped/spanked countless times now and we deserved it each time. She's now 16 and refuses to talk to my parents because of it. Worse still, she's said something or other to instill a deep sense of fear of her into my parents. I don't know the details of it, but my parents are always worried she'd call child services for some bogus reason.

But then again, she's the spoiled little spawn of satan who forced my parents to force me to spend 3 hours the night before an exam to fix something on the computer that was unfixable...

If you haven't already guessed, I got into an arguement with her and my parents again and as usual, she got her way :irked:

You know there's something wrong in the world when parents live in fear of their child...

Heh, I remember that day she screwed the comp. I believe the quote went something like "Gone. Just gone. Nothing." .

Now I'm being forced to reformat it against my will - of course, I must yield to HER schedule, not on mine. I should just take out everything I paid for out of my pockets or rightfully earned through bytesector... like the power supply, the usb card, firewire card, heat sink, the wireless keyboard/mouse, dvd burner, and the cd burner.

Of course, if I did that, I'd be yelled at even more just to shut the little prick up :irked:

It's not possible to say no to the spawn of satan. She's too heavily spoiled, and she's pretty much ruined my mom's life and is the primary cause of the major depression my mom has now. She doesn't respond to reason when it comes from family. She's an evil, manipulative, and will go to any lengths to have her way with the family.

 Had no idea. 👍

I've tried a few times. Once she dug up false, but very incriminating and very believable information to blackmail me with. Another time she gave me the most scary look imagineable and spoke to me as though she was ready to kill me. Another time she suggested overdosing on advil. To be honest, if I say no again, I'm afraid she'd stab me in my sleep - she's just the type of person to do it.

She's one disturbed little brat - all because she's pissed off from one or two spankings compared to the hundreds my bro and I got growing up.

I still say kids need to be spanked growing up.

it's a wonder how these people will turn out when they move out on their own, what type of person they marry (if they marry) what kind of kids they have, what kind of job they have...etc

and of course how their personality is (or lack thereof) later in life...change or not...

that is, those spoiled who did not recieve right discipline (or lack of spankings) or special cases like emad's sister

I have to agree with Anderton. You need to knock her down a few pegs (although whacking her with a baseball bat may be too severe...). You've gotta take a tough stance with her. Find a weakness, and exploit it to the ends of the earth. Otherwise, she'll be screwed up for the rest of her life.

While I agree that spanking may be nessary, (obviously worked on me :dopey: ) but the amount of fear put into a child by what the parents may say is what I have more of a problem with. Coming from an Asian family, it seems the stereotype is that Asian families are more strict (not nessarily a good thing) which I think magnifies the verbal and physicological damage it may do to a child. I feel that because I can be more easily be persuaded that I have aquired a harsh personality that has affected me in much more negative ways than positive but this really does depend on the child and their personality.
