"Standards" the good, the bad and the ugly

I remember kaz saying that "Every car has their own fans". Lets take a standard miata for example. A European person may prefer the eunos roadster, a person in Japan may prefer the mx-5, and the american may prefer the miata. But kaz really needs to realize, its the exact same car.

If the player is American the car in the game should be named Miata, if he's from Europe Eunos and if he's from Japan MX-5. One car and everyone is happy!

As a bonus I'd like to choose the driver position (left/right).

In Metropolis Street Racer on Dreamcast, you can choose the MX-5, Miata and Eunos, if i remember correctly the MX-5 was LHD.

Won't it be better if PD just got rid of the duplicates rather than keeping them? They serve no purpose other than increasing the car count to make a false advertisement saying "we got 1200 cars", while the 800 are just ports from GT4... It was okay in GT1 and GT2 because both those games had Racing Mods, but here, it's not. Not anymore.

Actually, most cars that look the same are not duplicates. For instance, lets use an R34 Skyline. One might say that the only R34 that should be in the game is the premium 2002 Skyline Nur. But, the Midnight Purple Skyline, isn't duplicated, it is a special edition. There is also an R34 with a carbon hood installed, which is neat since you can not install carbon hoods on standards.

Well yeah, that's why I said "If there's going to be so much duplicates..". I was talking strictly about GT6, and as we all know there are a lot of duplicates in GT6. My point was that most of those duplicate standards could easily be made into premiums by sharing the 3D model with a nearly identical car that is premium. I'd rather have premium duplicates than standard ones. But sure, the less duplicates in the next game the better.
The priority, surely, is on making new cars?

Why should they prioritise making Standard duplicates use Premium bodies? It's not like they didn't do it at all, because there are examples of PD doing exactly as you describe.

The state of Semi-Premiumification in GT6 should not be taken as an end point, rather a work in progress - the list can easily be far longer than what we see in the game.

Kaz actually knows this. He explained it in terms of the Japanese car industry in the '90s, and now feels that "there are too many".

Ah, but how does the game know where I'm from? What if I'm from the US, but prefer the Eunos? I won't be happy, will I?

This is why duplicates should be folded up as variants under the same model.

At the beginning of GT6 you enter your name, surname and nationality.
I can't think of any reason why you could want a Eunos instead of a Miata or MX-5 .

The thing is, I didn't say that it should be prioritized. And even in my original post I said that they already did it with the Miatas and the Aston.

I am not an expert in 3D modelling, but how much time could it take to take the premium BMW M5 model and make different side mirrors (because that seems to be the only exterior difference between the '08 and the standard one)? Or the '69 Camaro SS, another ugly standard model that could be a premium by changing some badging or trim on the premium Z/28? PD's modellers have always been among the best, I doubt making changes that small would take a modeller more than a day or two, if not only a few hours.

BTW, In my opinion, the whole semi-premium thing is unfortunately a waste of time. Most of them only have slightly cleaned up textures or a bit of added geometry but it's still nowhere close to premium quality. Even the best ones, that seem to actually have been remodelled like the Yellowbird need work. A huge majority of the so called semi premiums only have slightly cleaned up textures or a bit of geometry added. These improvements might barely work for GT6 but not for the next generation.

It's really quite a mess PD have made with all of the quality differences.

I'm pretty sure that the GT86, BRZ and FR-S are different cars with small changes. Since they are from different manufactures I think they should stay separated.

Between and Subaru and Toyota, that is true to an extent. The FR-S however is nothing more then a rebadged GT86.

Oh, I forgot about that; I chose something flippant / random anyway. Good luck recommending the Kenyan version of the Roadster, PD! (Sorry Kenya). (It's also an example of an opaque option - just include the option in an explicit way).

Well, how would you know what I want, anyway? Not only can I think of a few reasons, but I actually do prefer the Eunos because of them. So what does that say about your ability to predict methods to make "everybody happy"?

What would be so bad about the trim differences being treated like a different colour?

The point is they didn't decide to do a few and not any others. They did as many as they got around to, and they didn't get around to many precisely because they didn't paint it as a priority. That explains the quality issue, and the fact that so many are in different states of relative "completion".

It's so weird that you can hold two conflicting ideas in your head: you believe they must do all the Standards, but don't believe they should do them at all? In order to do them all, they first must do a few - what's wrong with including what they've done so far?

The only thing different about the FRS, BRZ, and GT86 are the paint color options. I bought the BRZ because of the WR Blue Mica paint chip.
