TCV5 HURRY THE HELL UP thread

As per Macca's 350Z:

Gears:
Use Tranny trick: Set Final ratio to 5.500, then set auto to 1, then adjust the rest.

1st: 2.403
2nd: 1.800
3rd: 1.400
4th: 1.160
5th: 1.000
6th: 0.867

...I'm not seeing a second Final Drive ratio setting, is anyone else?

As it is...this car starts redlining halfway down the main straight. :scared: and hits the RPM limit soon afterwards.

I understand making a "tranny trick" is supposed to sometimes include a second tweak to the final drive, but this 2nd tweak can vary. I'm not sure what to do at the moment.

Anybody here wanna have a discussion? The gearing feels completely silly if we're to follow those instructions to the letter.

Perhaps he means for you to set it back to the stock final drive after doing the tranny trick?

It'd make at least some sense.

MMmkay, that's one interpretation. But I understand alot of tuners will go:

5.500>

Auto Setting 1>

2.500

Which I'm tempted to do. But does "use tranny trick" always mean follow these instructions? Is that something you tuner-folk just know & assume; so therefore I should assume this too?

EDIT: No, that can't be right. Using that process described above (5.500 > Auto 1> 2.500) creates incredibly tall gears. 1st gear lasts till about 82 mph. Any gear higher than 3rd is not needed at TWE.

Damn! Just when it looked as if I'd fnially get my end of this contest done, there's a prob. :guilty: I should be driving, now, not "discussing". Knew I shoulda went to the bar tonite.

Well, as of late I've gone default -> setting 1 -> final 2.500 but the 5.5 -> 1 -> 2.5 will result in hugely long gears.

Exactly. But that's not the process Macca has listed....instead it's

Final of 5.500

Auto setting 1

Set the rest of the ratios.

Actually, in his words:

Gears:
Use Tranny trick: Set Final ratio to 5.500, then set auto to 1, then adjust the rest.

1st: 2.403
2nd: 1.800
3rd: 1.400

I've done some searching....there are various interpretations of what the "tranny trick" can actually entail. I wish Macca were here now to shed some light on all this, I don't wanna test his car as-is. It really feels ridiculous with just those instructions.

I just went back to default final ratio Parnelli, that's how I interpreted it. I didn't get clarification off Macca because he had been moving. From memory it's about 3.500 for his final.

P.S. Don't ask me more things, I've had 4hrs sleep thanks to a concert across the road finishing past 11pm last night then 🤬 idiots doing lawnmowing at 7am this morning.

Yes which is what makes me assume he wants us to go back to default final; it'd be somewhere in the low to mid 4:1 range and would give quite close to proper gearing for Motegi judging by the ratios.

Well I wasn't asking you specifically, mafs. I was asking any tuners currently present. You guys are more familiar with what "use tranny trick" could mean than I am. Would you prefer I NOT ask, and therefore wind up driving a car around which redlines and cuts off the entire time? I'm sure Macca would prefer I ask and get it right.

Anyways, get some sleep. You and me both are getting testy. :grumpy: I know what it's like when you want to sleep, but the world wont' let you. It sucks.

👍 Thanks for your prompt responses, guys. I'm off to the track, then.

Sorry Parnelli if I sounded harsh, I'm just trying to be civilised with absolutely minimal sleep and I would rather you ask, I'm just saying I haven't got enough brainpower at the moment to answer properly. :) And yes, we are both testy I think. You can be left testy, I'll be the right. :P:lol:

Don't know where that came from but yeah, trying to be comedic. :P

The 'tranny trick' is usually going to max ratio setting (which is 5.500 in this case) then doing individual gears and in my cases, going back to the default final ratio.

Awesome, brother. I apologize too. But NO MORE QUESTIONS from me...I'm officially done with testing! 👍

That's what I did. I'm fine with that, as long as this is you guyses preferred method of tranny-tricking.

What about ballast? Will it help too?

I'm still waiting patiently for the last review of my Corvette. :) I'm having a new philosophy towards tuning right now, where I make the cars as comfortable to drive, instead of the fastest. By saying comfortable I mean controllable, and thus, a more controllable car has the advantage of allowing the driver to use it better, therefore improving lap times.

Seems the STi did as well as I could really hope for it to at least in Parnelli's judging.

I find on most AWDs a tight rear diff adds occasionally a very slight amount of understeer but the pull out of corners is sacrificed with less (and it wouldn't feel so good sideways then either). Ah well. Having a car that can go drifting with N2s under it, go racing with S or R tires, and go rallying all at once, even if it's a bit compromised at each, is nice.

Ah, so that's what that strong setting was about...makes sense now. It is quite a tossable car, so much different from any other.

Yea, that sucker was so good into turns (like I said a zillion times in my writeup) but leaving them was another story. I'm sure I could have eked a 1:22 if there wasn't as much understeer under throttle. I tried really hard man. At least there was zero wheelspin, tho. 👍

SWEEEt! I'm in the top 3 of PB's Supercar ratings!!!

I'm so gonna fire up the PS2 tonight! The Fire has been lit!

Just some notes on my tuning prowess or the lack thereof (ok just one note):

I do believe that stiffness works but my problem is i never drive the car stock first so i don't adjust accordingly. :dunce::ouch:

As for my Aston, i tried to tune it with a high level of under steer too keep the car in check without too many hairy moments. Unaccomplished in some areas heh.

But nevertheless I'm SOOOO HAPPY!

Thanks guys!

*Looks forward to the next TCV after everyone else posts their results. (The nail biting continues :nervous::scared:)*

PS - The MPS 6 was really an experiment gone wrong :D

Yeah I did my best to get rid of as much of it as possible but there's only so much that can be done with fully mechanical clutch-type differentials all around. Evos have the active rear diff, Skylines have the center and Imprezas get the shaft.

Ah well it's by far the best I've done with an iron-diff car so far. And I suppose I could've gotten better results by lightening the car and running less power, but what's the fun in that?

Ah well...I never hostly expected the XJ220 to do very well. The braking on that car is as badly-moddeled as the Lotus Elise's () and the extra 160+ Kgs of weight hurt the handling quite a bit (That and i gave it an oil change when i really didn't mean to, but i kept the car as it was and said "Eh, why not? It'll be more of a challenge!).

I think it really would've been a "Game-Breaker" of a car if i entered it in TCv4 (Which didn't have WPR limits). Still, that was great write-up Parnelli! One of the funniest i've read on GTPlanet!:cheers:

(Oh, and i've already started working on my Harder, Better, Faster & Stronger "Exuseo" Supercar Entry...:) :gtpflag:) )

I loved how it was almost wall to wall Euro trash in the super car section, maybe that's something to keep in mind for future tcv competitions? :D

First off, LET US ALL CONGRATULATE AND THANK PARNELLI for his magnificent efforts in judging all the four categories. I know this has been a HUGE sacrifice on your part and ALL OF US owe you a great debt of gratitude for all your time put in to help judge this and make this 1/4 of the best tuner challenge we've had so far!!

Thankyou for everything Parnelli, you've been the biggest help once again.

Mafs!!

Like I implied, the Mazdaspeed feels almost like my real-life truck when I have it in 4-wheel drive. It "binds up" in the middle of tight turns, unless you're on some snow or mud. :dopey:

Like I said, I was like "this is gonna be the winner" at first. But I kept driving and driving. I got frustrated because I couldn't get anywhere near where I thought it should be (1:21s). I have a tendency to get too obsessive with lap times, to the point of frustration.

...but then I Zen out. :dopey:

lol @ my score.

Not having a good day that day, forgot to put the brake settings on

Doh!

I enjoyed driving your car nonethless, which was more "relaxing". I was stoned when I drove it, too, but I DID try and defeat that BATTLE MONSTER towards the end of my drive. Couldn't do it, tho.

2nd place again, :banghead: :P this time tied with VTiRoj's M3. Not bad company.

Yup. Blame Macca for throwing off the tie.

I was hoping ther'd be some Corvettes or a Chrysler 300 or something weird towards the end. maybe next time.

I'm done! I can go out and see the sun again!

Do excuse me, I've been on holiday for the past 2 weeks. ^^

Not to be a prick, but if it ain't listed, (and the car is otherwise competitve) I dont' think we should install. That's how I've been doing this all along. None of VTiRoj's cars have a carbon driveshaft listed, and I haven't been installing, and he hasn't had a prob with this. He's accepted it as his mistake.
Yeah my bad totally, next time I'm getting someone to proof-read my setup sheets before posting.

I'm sorry man, but if it ain't listed, I'm not installing it. VTiRoj meant to list carbon driveshafts, but forgot in every instance...does this mean I should soft-putty his mistake and install them anyways? No way. Next thing you know, everyone's gonna start saying "well I meant to do this but forgot...can you retest?" :indiff:
I didnt even ask for a retest with the driveshafts, I forgot to put them on and if that harms my scores then it's a lesson to be learnt on my part. :)👍

I second that. :D

If it wasnt for those brakes, the CSL would've had 2nd (or maybe 1st) all to itself, d'oh! :dunce:

Edit: Oh and since every car of mine has at least 1 score now, lets see which one came out best out of my 4...

Do excuse me if I've missed a score out.

S2k - 72 + 76
NSX - 75 + 81
M3 - 89 + 81
CSL - 76

Guess my M3 is my top... *looks at username* Hmm... *changes name to M3Roj* :D:tup:
