I'm just feeling bad because I was expecting a car, not a box with windows and a weird whistling sound.
It's an electric car, how else would it sound? :odd:

Also, I bet if an aftermarket company made a Model S style "grille" for the front they would sell a ton of them. And let's not kid ourselves, Tesla will sell a ton of these.

My only real gripe is that steering wheel. The rest of the interior isn't terrible.

I really like the overall shape and design of the car. It's a natural progression and downsizing of the Model S design. I am, however, one of those that is a bit put off by the big blank slab on the front.

There is a chance we'll see some changes here and there between now and when it goes into production.

You guys are crazy. You're telling me that you'd rather have a Prius than one of these?

The exterior doesn't bother me. Sure, it's a little different. But I'm old and just used to things that are different than when I grew up. The lack of a gap in the front where air normally goes doesn't bother me. It's the interior. A) It's bland. 2) Like you said, it's a hot box waiting to happen. Purple) The large screen, which undoubtedly is set up as a do-all screen, isn't going to work. It's a new way of driving that people aren't accustomed too. It would take some time to get used to checking the speed on that thing. Plus, what happens when somebody inevitable tries to steal it thinking it's a tablet? 4) Much like my numbering system, it just doesn't seem to work.

Do I want one of these over the Prius? I'll take the Leaf.

Who is stupid enough to try to steal the fablet?!?

And even if they do, the car would drive away by itself.

A leaf ?! That thing is even worse looking...

You really are showing your age...

My bet is, you will like this car when it comes out... Mark my word...

Criminals. Stupid criminals. I mean, if people will steal a $60 car stereo, which wouldn't they try to steal that?

And even if they do, the car would drive away by itself.

Really? Even if this were true, wouldn't it be at 2mph? Isn't that how fast the summon feature will allow. (I know it ain't fast.)

To each their own.

You really are showing your age...

I wasn't trying to hid it. In fact, quite the opposite.

Probably not. But nice try at fortune telling.

That looks insanely distracting. It also literally looks like a $90 TV bolted to the dash...and not in a good way. Other than that, there is basically zero design effort in the interior. I'm a modernist architect, so I'm all for [occasional] minimalism, but this is just boring.

Exterior I actually like but the interior... Jeez, most kit cars have a better interior.

I haven't seen such a boring interior before. And I watched the first minute of the test drive and does it not have a speedo?

The "speedometer" was in the top left corner of the screen.

I like that they put the screen only in the middle so that the air can blow straight towards you from the flanking vents. But I also don't really like that because I need cold wind blowing right into my face when I'm driving. It's the only way to stop sweating after you have to walk to your car. I don't need diffuse A/C, I need an aimed vent.

Also, really really hate that there's a sharp corner right above your knee. Can't see that being too nice in an accident, and I bet I would smash my knee on that while trying to get in the car.

Overall, the looks of the Model 3 really exceeded my expectations, it is the best looking EV in its price range right now by far. I do have a couple of issues though:
  1. The front bumper. It's not bad, but I can't ignore how much better looking it would be with a Model-S like faux grille. It is almost like Tesla sculpted the centre of the bumper for aftermarket applications. With that said, I think it will be less of an issue in European countries where a large rectangular number plate will be placed in that blank area.
  2. The Interior. Simplicity is nice (i.e. Mazda interiors), but that is taking it too far. It is virtually devoid of any design and then there is that massive screen which looks like a prime target for thieves.

Love it.

The proportions are really, really good (super short overhangs), big passenger compartment (should have decent space inside for it's footprint), class leading performance, competitive price (should be mid 30k £'s in the UK).

Looks best in the darker colours (at least in the pictures).

Dash is interesting... the only real information you need is the speedo and as long as this is easily visible within your field of vision I don't see it being an issue. All cars have broadly the same approach to interiors, so this is what we have become accustomed to - it will just take a bit of getting used to.

If I could be sure I'll still be living in the UK in 2 years time I'd stick a deposit down today... Brother-in-law (P90D owner) has already got his deposit in and will be one of the 1st 10 to be delivered in the UK.

The interior is hideous IMO. The best thing about the Model S and X is the interior and this literally looks like someone glued an iPad Pro to a prison cell wall.

As for the exterior I would have preferred they copied the front of the X and at least it would recognisably be a Tesla. It looks like a squished Panamera. I hoped the facelifted S looks nothing like the 3.

All in all kinda disappointing I would have preferred something expected rather than something ungainly like this at the front. The rear is OK.

I quite like it overall, minus a few niggly things. Thee interior would take a bit of getting used to and I can imagine that massive screen would be really distracting. You're legally not allowed to use your mobile whilst driving yet you are allowed to use essentially a massive tablet.

I think if the screen was smaller with actual buttons to operate the lights and stuff I would be genuinely interested. The price to me seems really good as well considering the performance and the tech involved. But there are still too many negatives about electric cars for this to appeal to the masses I think.

They won't appeal to the masses until the hit at least 300 miles of range and sell for around $20k.

Most analysts reckon 200 miles and $30k should be the tipping point for many. The former is enough for a large number of the people put off by 100-mile cars to change their minds, and the latter is fairly arbitrary as it is as most people seem to lease EVs and pay some relatively insignificant monthly cost anyway.

However, at 300 miles/$20k I'm sure there'd be very few people left who'd bother with internal combustion.

As for the Model 3... I'm not keen. I've never been overly enamoured with Tesla's fairly featureless styling anyway - it's usually fairly handsome but also utterly unremarkable, and the 3 seems uncomfortably proportioned to me. Not as bad as the Model X, but not as sleek as the Model S. And a grille may be pointless on an EV, but then they probably shouldn't have designed a front end that looks like it was designed for a grille but someone forgot to add one.

Generally though, playing on the safe side aesthetically which is understandable. The interior is a bit more risky. Not particularly attractive, but I can see what they were going for and it's probably better to use than it is to look at - that certainly applies with the Model S.

I think Tesla really does need to hire some top design talent though. With something more akin to the BMW i3's interior it'd be much more appealing inside, and while I'd not advocate something crazy for the exterior, it wouldn't hurt to give the car better proportions and some more interesting details.
