Yes, it sure does affect you the last few laps, not easy to manage at all. Hats off to you for being able to win these on hard. I was able to beat Shift 1 and 2 on hard, but I'm not sure I have the patience to do it in this game.
By far the toughest races (even on easy) in the Modern set for me were the Enzo race at Riviera Monte Grande, the obstacle race with the 575 Maranello, the first F1 race at Donnington. So many restarts.
All I have left in the Modern set is the last 3 races, and I just might have hit the wall again for a while. I'm in the 2011 F1 on Spa, 10 laps, need to win to unlock the 2008 F1.
The F1 races I'm finding to be really tricky. More so from your own driving than how the cars handle. You have to un-train yourself with these. What I mean is, if you've played F1 2010 or 2011, you know the second you feel the grip break you're in trouble and you compensate to try to save it. In this game, you go into that telltale SMS slide if you push too hard, not necessarily a spin right away. Your mind automatically turns the wheel the other way to overcompensate (habit from playing those other games), and that sends you into a slide the other way. You may spin, but probably just wobble a bit and lose time. By then the AI is either by you or smashes right into you. The AI is incredibly fast in these. And the braking distance is so short. The sense of speed in insane.
I have yet to nail down the sensitivity settings with these. Too low, and it's unresponsive, leading you to try too hard to turn it creating those slides, too high and you just wobble doing little slides back and forth too often. These races are tough for me. This one's going to take some serious practice.
If you're doing this on hard with tire wear, it's going to be a major pain, the AI doesn't let up.
The only things to unlock from these are the 2008, 2011 F1 cars, and Fiorano Alternate. I think the last two will be easier, one's a lap time challenge, and the last a regular race with the 458.
I really enjoyed the F430 Challenge and Scuderia Spec series. Those cars handle great, and the races were a lot of fun. Even the obstacle courses on Riviera were manageable with the Scuderia.
I'm happy I've unlocked pretty much all of the modern tracks and I have a nice list of decent handling cars to hotlap in now.
Time to go back and finish the Gold and start the Silver soon.
But going back and comparing to the Shift DLC, I still think most look and handle better in Shift. But that's also attributed to both the settings and being able to tune them as well. Some do seem less twitchy in FRL.
I'm enjoying this more than Shift 2 though, that's for sure. The tracks look better than they did in Shift 2 IMO. That cloudy lighting on Monza! 👍
Edit- Speaking of that race with 599GTB ussr, you've got another coming up with it. But it's just one lap on the ring, a timed challenge to unlock it.
Oh and when you get to the California race at Riviera Monte Grande, I suggest upping the sensitivity a lot. It's one hugely understeering car in this game. It might feel different with a wheel though, who knows.
MildAshers- you in the UK? I've read it's still coming. Not sure about the PC release, the dates are all over the place. I imagine the modders are going to have fun with this though.
