TH8 RS Shifter Thread!

Thrustmaster confirmed they will be sending me a new tension screw and shaft.

In the meantime, I would like to explore the possibilities of using my B&M handle. It appears the shift handle originally comes with some threaded inserts.

Since I bought mine off ebay, I didn't get them. I'd like to know what size insert I would need to fit onto the original TH8RS shaft? Can anyone tell me?

9mm x 1.25 is the thread on the TH8RS and... they don't make them that I have seen. I had to make a guy an adapter and it's not that easy.

Thanks for the swift reply bro. wow that sucks :( Do you suppose I could get a machine shop to make a one off 9mm x 1.25 insert? If so, how much would they charge you think?

What size are the threads on the B&M handle? The bigger the better...

All that really needs to happen is this:

  • They take a bolt that fits the threads on the B&M, drill out the center of the threaded end.
  • Tap it with 9mm x 1.25 threads.
  • Cut the threaded portion off to use and clean up the threads.

For a machine shop it's like a 15 minute job... Though at $100 an hour, that's $25 plus parts.

The reason I say the bigger the better is because the more material there is to work with, the better it is going to tap.

Also... Thanks for posting this... You reminded me I need to do something... :D

Ahh I see. good question man, I dunno the size, but here's a pic I posted that shows me sticking the shaft of the TH8 in there.

Looks like it's kinda bigger but not by much?

The sucky thing about it is, I should have bought this handle at retail price from an actual online retail shop instead of ebay. That way I would have received the threaded inserts :( :( :(

If I had to guess, I'd say it's either 3/8 or half inch... Likely 1/2"-20... Kinda hard to tell but I'm sure with some looking you could find it. Or take it to the hardware store and start trying to thread bolts in there :P

You can buy the adapters from several different places, just google: shift knob thread adapter. However, none of them adapt to 9x1.25...

I was looking through Amazon, and just came across this shifter, though in two versions; a PC and a PS3 version. They both look the same, but the PC version is a bit cheaper. Is there really two versions?

(I think this is the right place to ask .)

That seems extremely unlikely. Look at the SKU on the two... I bet it's identical.

Can you give a link(s)

Pretty sure they are identical. The only difference in the pictures is the (first) photo of the shifter itself. The box is the same and says PC/PS3

Hm... Maybe Amazon can't have PlayStation and PC under "platforms", on one product :odd:? It's the same story - but worse - on Amazon France, as they charge close to €10 more for the "PC" version. What a shame.

But thanks, for clearing that up !

OK thanks I'll try looking around at some HW stores

Hey guys,

can anyone tell me what size and what kind of magnet this is? I found it sitting on my refrigerator.

I took a picture of it just now, it's sitting on top of the TH8RS shifter plate. What's the diameter and what kind is it? It's silver but it's very strong, unlike the black magnets I checked out at Home Depot today. Is there a name for these kinds of little silver magnets, and why are they stronger than the black dirty magnets?

Are you using them to modify the TH8RS?
If so how?

Not really a "modification" per se, but my idea is to place the magnets underneath itrdc's shifter plate and at the end of each shift gate, so that it they deliver a slight pull of the shaft into the slot.

This will hopefully give the shifting a more "lock into place" type feeling! Coupled with a new bottom shaft replacement part I'm hoping it adds some nice tension and a more snappy feel. We'll see how it goes. The main thing is I'm avoiding using the plastic plate altogether so it will already improve the "lock to lock" feeling.

I'll keep you posted :D

I bought a second TH8rs and I noticed there isn't a click sound as I place it in gear like my other one. Is there a way to adjust the shifter to add this?

Adjustment screw on the side. Turn it counter clockwise. Its probably on a bit too tight.

Was that in regards to mine not clicking? I have never even touched that screw since getting the shifter.

I bought 3 others at the same time for resale, I tested them before sending off to new owners, none of them clicked either.

The shifter uses a hal effect sensor, so that won't click. It's the that is in that screw that gives a click when it slides from hole to hole.
The problem with your shifter and that of the gentleman before you is that the ball is under such tension that it does not click. Unscrewing it will do that, though it loosens up the shifter a bit too.

Ok I checked again, it clicks when passing over the neutral zone.
I can sense the physical click when it enters or leaves the neutral zone, its not that audible.
I guess that could be interpreted as it clicks when placed into gear...
I have a short shift plate so the forward-back travel between gates is less than the stock version.
So no worries here. Thanks for the advice Logi.

That's the only disadvantage of the construction used for the TH8. The short shift plate will only make the ball go out and back into the neutral socket again. It won't be able to turn far enough to get into the other two sockets producing the click.

Well, no complaints here, the short shift plate really made shifting faster, especially after calibrating with the Thrustmaster software. The lower knob really helped too.
