But for his racecraft he'd be a surefire choice for a Lotus seat.

That's bold. Force India, probably a better seat - Do you see him as like, a young Massa then, because as a total long shot - could he be an option for Ferrari? I've heard lots of talk of what Massa brings to Ferrari regarding money, and most of it seems to revolve around the South American markets - playing right towards PDVSA.

Maldonado being 28 is not a young anything, not athletically; for him the future is now. I don't see him as a Ferrari-seat contender -- too inconsistent. And the need Massa allegedly addresses for Ferrari and Santander isn't cash per se, it's more sheer marketability, in South America. On that front Maldonado's political ties are again as much a liability as they are a help.

Man, they're so lucky the race in Sochi is happening otherwise it would've fell through. I imagine Nico's gonna go to Lotus next year and Esteban will get another year so Sauber has the double-shot of Telmex and the Russian partnership to help them get going again.

I wonder if their talks with that other Russian Football owner guy had a hand or spruced up a connection between Sauber and these new partners. Lucky them though, they really needed it and a few other teams were after that same deal. It must've come down to giving Sirotkin a seat and the other teams saying no.

I don't think Sochi has much to do with it. One of the comanies backing Sauber is the State Fund of Development of North-West Russian Federation, which is centred on Moscow and St. Petersburg. Then there's the National Institute of Aviation Technologies, which is a major aerospace engineering contractor (coincidentally, Sergey Sirotkin's father is an engineer and maanger for them, but he doesn't seem to be a decision-maker). And finally, the Investment Cooperation International Fund, which is designed to lure foreign direct investment into Russia. This has got the Russian government's fingerprints all over it.

Also, I see no evidence that Sauber will dump Hulkenberg for Sirotkin and keep Gutierrez. Depending on the level of investment from Russia, the Mexican money keeping Gutierrez in the team may not be necessary to keep them afloat. And I've heard that the Slims want to change their sponsor portfolio and just back McLaren and Sergio Perez, rather than dividing their attention between teams and drivers.

Never heard of this Sirotkin guy before but after looking at what he's done and when you bear mind the fact that he's only 17 he could have some potential.

Elsewhere, Daniel Juncadella will be testing for Williams at the Silverstone YDT:

It wouldn't surprise me if Toto Wolff uses his positions as Mercedes executive and Valtteri Bottas' manager to get Bottas moved up to Force India to make way for Juncadella at Williams. Both teams could get engine subsidies for agreeing, while Williams would get more money from the Astana Group, who backed Juncadella in Formula 3 and have had an increased presence on the car since they joined a few months ago.

Meanwhile, Vettel begins testing of the 2014 Ferrari he'll be driving alongside Alonso:

Marussia will get Ferrari engines in 2014.

Don't have a link because I've used up all my free articles on Autosport.

Daniel Ricciardo will run for Red Bull in the Silverstone tests:

It's the clearest sign they're seriously considering him for 2014.

Sounds promising for him.

I would love DR to get a drive in a top team, he deserves it. His recent performances show he could be a great driver and possibly challenge Vettel. And he's always smiling even if he finishes last or fails to finish. I don't think you can upset him!

I think it'll be close between him and Raikkonen for Webber's seat.

It's a hard decision, do you bring in Kimi because he's a very experienced champion? or do you bring in Daniel because he has age on his side? I think whoever they bring in they will be far more consistent than Mark has been for the last 2/3 years.

I would definetely say that Kimi would be more consistent, but I think Daniel wouldn't be quite as consistent as Webber. He hasn't got the experience. Could prove me wrong though. I'd go for DR personally, so much better with the press and seems like a great young bloke deserving a top drive.

There are some rather frightening reports coming out of Venezuela claiming that Johnny Cecotto Jnr. will be in Formula 1 next year ...

Same rumors are the talk of the Autosport boards. General reaction is horror, thanks to GP2 misdeeds that put Maldonado's in the shade.

Calado, Sainz Jnr., Cecotto Jnr., and Kvyat will variously test for Force India and Toro Rosso:

Sainz Jnr. is also testing for Red Bull, so I'm guessing he's being considered for a Toro Rosso seat.

Sainz? Although I would love the name in the sport isn't it a bit early for him no matter how well he does at the test? He is a GP3 rather than GP2 driver right?

Oh dear.

And the winner of the 2014 championship is the team that are the only ones not to get regularly smashed off the track.

I imagine they're also giving themselves a backup in case for whatever reason they can't get Kimi. Maybe Lotus offer him a ton of money. Maybe he just likes it better there. Who knows?

Crazy stuff happens in F1 sometimes. Red Bull can't put all their eggs in one Finnish man.

Oh you haven't seen the video of him exposing all to the Monaco harbour police whilst drunk. I won't post the video even though it's blurred. In fact it is in the suggested videos at the end of that one.

In new driver news.

Sergey Sirotkin could have a Sauber drive next year.

That's very young I must say for an F1 drive.
