The “blue pond” of the famous tourist resort in Biei, Hokkaido, Japan is a place where many tourists gather in spring, summer, and autumn. However, since this pond freezes in winter, nobody is there during that period. This photograph was taken during the first snow of the season as it fell over the blue pond.

I know it's a huge image... but for £2.7m i'm sure you could buy a plot of land on that very spot and build a decent sized house that you could sit in and stare at the same view all day. For real!

Sod that, for £2.7m I'd want a much better view...even the Mersey looks better and that's 85% turd!

It's not even a wide aspect-ratio so it looks terrible anyway.

I believe this is the picture that held that record before. $3.3 million. I still don't understand art. My sister has taken better pictures with a $700 camera that hangs above our mantel. To each their own I guess.

Spent about ten minutes last night with my new lens, it's a cool photo to me. A bit out of focus, has also been zoomed and cropped. I also have the slightest clue as to what i'm doing.

You have to look at it from an art critic standpoint. That photo above of the grocery store for example, and could represent a reflection on society. No shortage of choice and extremely colourful, but at the same time, a throw away commodity. You eat the chocolate bar and then what do you have left besides the wrapper? Nothing, so we buy another.

For me its all a load of crap but thats the kind things people look at when they buy paintings. That and it has to be aesthetically pleasing.

That's Gurksys old record, however the previous highest record belonged to this by Cindy Sherman.

A print sold for $3.89 million.

My English teacher taught us to look at things from many perspectives. I think it's crap as well but once you start thinking about it, it's hard to not to think deep anymore. When I saw it I started think about everything you listed there. I'm becoming a wacko artist! Help!

Oh ok sorry about that. I'd like to see the critic review on that one hahaha.

Hmm, do I reveal my sources? ;) It's just a few sites really although some don't provide hi res images but if you use tineye or google reverse image search you may be able to find the original full size jpg somewhere.

Anyone remember the 'Migrant Mother' photo from their American history class? Here is someone's attempt to color it.

I think they forgot to do the baby though because it looks like it's been dead for a month...
