The KLM plane and the DC10 are seriously close.

I wonder what the wash is like from the jet engines.

Landing is not bad as the throttles are generally at idle thrust (unless they are running too short) but take off has a significant jet blast problem, though mostly amusing to tourists really.

sorry for posting videos in a pic thread

This one is taken from someone's Deviantart, a deviant called Struller. Here's the larger size (as a link, doesn't seem to work as a hotlink):

Getting back to big city pics. This is a section of Dubai taken from one of the palm islands.

The Palm - nice if you got in early. Someone my gf's brother knows lives on the Palm. They bought the property originally for 1 million Dirhams (about £183k or $272k). It's now worth 30 million dirhams (£5.5m or $8.2m)... They also own a yacht moored in Jumeirah harbour, apparently, and a Ferrari F430 lurks in the garage. Some people are just too rich

Nice photo though!

Dubai Confuses me. It's so flimsy. It's riches and power rest on its slums and more importantly, the hope that sea levels dont rise.

This is quite possibly my favorite thread on GTP. I love sharing the things I find, especially when the original artist is willing to share their work to begin with. Here is some more light painting, but taken to yet another level. Work by LAPP. I only selected a few favorites, but pay respect to their site, which has dozens more.

Beautiful shots! 👍

Speaking of lighting effects... mother nature can be quite impressive as well:

This image was just recently captured by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory of pulsar B1509's impressive light show from 17,000 light years away (or about 170 quadrillion kilometers) ... which some are naming "The hand of God".

That's a great astrophoto 👍 Here's another - Supernova 1987a, the brightest ever observed:

sn1987.jpg

This photo was taken 20 years after it was first discovered. The supernova was 169k light years away. The "pearls" were spotted more recently and at the time the photo was taken were increasing in number - it's apparently light from the explosion reflecting off gasses being carried by the shockwave.

Also, a recent Hubble discovery of a new type of galaxy, that blurs the boundaries between spiral and elliptical galaxies. It's been designated the name NCG 7049, for those wishing to look it up:

And lastly, I've recently been looking into shipping container housing - exactly as it says on the rather large tin, housing made out of old shipping containers. They're brilliant for building with as they have standardised sizes and naturally slot beside and on top of one another, they're vastly cheaper than building a house out of brick or wood, and better for the environment as it's effectively recyling as opposed to using energy to create something new. Some companies are using them to make very cheap homes for those in desperate need, such as those displaced by hurricane Katrina. Other companies are using them to make inexpensive yet versatile and interesting homes such as Container City at Trinity Wharf in the London docklands area:

It's definitely one of my favourite cheap housing concepts - something the world desperately needs.

Doing something with containers has been a fairly huge design challenge in the last decade or so. It's the latest rage in the past half-decade too, with more sustainability issues hitting the mainstream. Not only does it cost less than building something with virgin materials, but it also helps eliminate the global surplus of the things. It costs way less for China to manufacture a new container than to ship an empty one back.

I would use my container as an entrance to the Batcave. :D

How are they insulating the things?

Exactly. And I've seen figures as low as $10k for a single-container home - not the last word in style or space but certainly a start for actually owning your own home (and stacked like those in Container City would look less "trailer park" than the ones in the link I provided).

There are containers going on UK ebay for less than a grand. How much of a normal house do you reckon a grand would get you? Some foundations? A foot-high of bricks and a concrete floor? Need a bit more space? Buy another container for a grand and weld it to the side of your house.

With a bit of imagination and some extra effort you could have something like this:

Or maybe this industrial looking beastie in New Zeland:

I'm not sure exactly, but apparently they're quite nice to live in. This vid on youtube talks to some of the residents of Container City and they seem to love it.

@Omnis

Most have some form of insulation in them. Ive been inside about 5 of them and each has had some form that looked nearly identical to the others. My grandpa has a few that he uses to store his classics in.

Dang, apparently the memory of your computer is more important than the speed of your internet when you're looking at pics as big as that 9000x9000. Darn thing crashed my computer the first time...a half hour ago. Let's try this again...

How much RAM do you have?
