I suspect it's a combination of a lot of things, including ridiculous real estate speculation, sub prime lending, and certainly a failing automotive industry, among other things.
How about these figures for the average home prices in Detroit:
Oct. 2007 = $185,000
Oct. 2008 = $25,000
Mar. 2009 = $18,000
Today? =
90% drop in just 17 months.

It's better to live in the northern suburbs like I do, I can snag a house for next to nothing around here and I won't run as high of risk of being gunned down in the street. Michigan isn't a bad place to live if you can stand cold winters, hot and humid summers, crappy roads and no employment .
