Battling Heavyweights at the Sacred Valley!
We return to Grand Valley, this time on the full course, for this week's race.
Despite the full course of Grand Valley Speedway being quite long, on Comfort Softs the Delta doesn't really have a huge cornering advantage on the rest of the field, despite its lighter weight compared to them. It's only a two lap race, so you can't really afford to make too many mistakes if you want to win.
The AI field I got is pretty close together in terms of performance. Your opponents for this race will mostly be Imprezas and Skylines, with the occasional Lancer or Audi. All of them are quite heavy, so it mitigates the power advantage they have on you, which isn't that big to begin with.
For the AI field I got, I used this strategy:
Off the start, pass the gray R32 into turn 2. If that isn't possible, pass him into turn 3, as the AI tends to brake there, but the Delta can make turn 3 flat-out. Next, we overtake the Impreza wagon into turn 4, but sometimes it can be too fast to overtake into turn 4, so we get him into turn 6 instead.
If we overtook the Impreza wagon into turn 4, it is possible to get past the bug-eyed Impreza in front of it into turn 6, otherwise, we'll probably have to wait until turn 11, just before the first tunnel, to get past him.
Most of the time, we can't overtake anyone else until Lap 2, but sometimes, if you dare to brake late enough, it is possible to overtake the 22B into turn 16. But most of the time, we'll slipstream it and overtake it down the main straight as we start Lap 2.
Ahead of us is a cluster of cars: A red R32, a green Audi S4, and an Evo VI. Usually, we can get both the R32 and the Audi into turn 2, and the Lancer into turn 4. That last one is tricky, however, as the Evo tends to brake check us into turn 4. This is a massive run killer as we lose too much speed if we hit him here, and then catching the leader becomes near impossible.
Next up is the blue Audi RS6, which we usually get past into Turn 6, then have about a 6 second gap to catch the blob-eyed Impreza up front. On rare occasions, the Impreza can get stuck behind the RS6, which allows us to get both of them into turn 11 and effectively get half a lap on clean air while the Audi holds up the Impreza, but usually, the white STi will be long gone by now.
If the STi got past the RS6, you're short on time to catch him. Most of the time, we make the pass for the win coming out of the last tunnel in Turn 15, or on the braking zone to Turn 16. You then have to watch out for him on the main straight, as there is enough room for him to steal your win, so you'll have to block him to stay in 1st. This could get you a small speed boost as well, which could save you a few tenths.
I didn't do too many runs on this one, but I'll probably do some more later (I had a great run that was killed by getting brake checked by the Evo in turn 4 on lap 2). For now, my fastest time is a
4:55.540.
