The damage system in GT5 (update : Mechanical Damage arrived only for online races)

It's called GT Life. It's all about developing the driver.

OK and that has what to do with witholding damage?

Real racing develops drivers pretty darn well and damage is in it from the get... I would think a sim would try to, you know, simulate that experience.

Sorry guys but this is a really bad concept if it's true, so bad in fact that I don't buy it at all. I mean how long does it take to get to level 40? It seems like a lot of gameplay without damage and then all of a sudden it miraculously unlocks?

Because as you're new to the game it relaxes some of the more hardcore features. As you develop as a driver things get more difficult. The XP points used for levelling are called experience points.

Blame the Cod franchise if you don't like it.

Members on here jump to conclusions too fast bro. No where in that vid did the guy say you unlock damage after level 40. This is what happens on this site

People read what they want to read. And then get disappointed when it is not what they thought it is.

QFT.

Then when someones agrees with that wishful thinking they quote the post, and suddenly it's no longer rumour, it's fact...

I can understand people being excited for the game, but pretending a post on an internet forum is fact simply because someone wants it to be doesn't change anything about the game...

Its progressive.

Sure I hate the idea too, but at the same time with only a Miata and 3 races, you crash, you wont have money to fix it. So Its progressive. Once you reach LVL 40 for FULL damage it seems that you have enough money and cars to crash few cars during race and wont have to start from very beginning.

Also note after 4-5 days of play people are already at lvl 20s. So maybe a good week will get you LVL 40.

That video doesn't really show us anything. The guy could have been beating on that car for an hour. And the quote reinforces this.

This, the damage is impressive, shouldn't have taken a absurd amount of time to get to that point.

The CoD franchise kind of goes the other way... as you get more XP you get things that make life easier (which seems silly to me but it works I guess).

As I have said before, it seems damage is something best learned when things are slow and easy. Holding damage back just builds bad habbits right off the bat and then steepens the learning curve when it does kick in because rather than learning about damage during a sunday cup in a Cappucino you now learn about damage in a race with performance cars...

And it's not like having damage settings doesn't give you that option exactly while still allowing for those who are not noobs to have the full experience right off the bat... I think forcing skilled drivers into bumper car battles for the first few hours/days is worse by far than exposing new drivers to damage (maybe make it cosmetic only or restricted) from the get.

So it takes you hours to damage the car like that  OK man lets see whats the verdict. đź‘Ť

Ok all that video shows is severe visual damage is possible in the game. The guy says "you don't need to be level 40 to smash up a car, just persistence."

So it remains to be seen how much mechanical and visual damage is unlocked at level 40.

Really what we want to see is this kind of visual damage + mechanical damage occurring after one huge crash at level 40.

Well all the waiting and speculation will be over very very soon. I kind of want to leave this forum for a good while after getting the game and discover everything for myself. Don't want to read that someone got to level 40 (or w/e) before me and discovered the damage still sucks. That among other surprises that might be around the corner :)

Well I'm not going to judge the system until I play it. I do understand the reasoning of slowly immersing players into the full GT5 experience though. Whether I like it or not doesn't mean dick either because I'll be fully ranked within a week of owning it.

This brings up a good point... what if you have damaged all your cars really badly and are out of cash? It's quite possible...

Then:

a) You will have to sell one of the cars for cash

or

b) You will have to take that beaten up car back to the sunday cup and try to win.

Makes me wonder about online damage actually. Will it cost money to repair? What about the guy that just rammed you on purpose?

I wish in options they would have a "damage" option so I can set it to professional where you get FULL damage from the start. I rather not ear, or wait for it.

Well...the guy that rammed you on purpose will have to fix his car too...because he just rammed you. So...

True that. As well as the fact that most of the people buying GT5 won't be the best at racing. So I guess it would make sense to give those beginners a break. But sadly many of them take it for granted. đź‘Ž

I haven't been following the damage saga but I will give my point of view on this supposed level system. If in fact, you must earn experience and "level up" to unlock greater damage modelling, it is the greatest feature implemented in a game ever. If you are 12 and just want to crash to see how cool it is, you will be disappointed. If you show experience and "respect" in how you drive, and are able to properly control yourself during races, you will be rewarded with a richer and note complete gaming experience. If that's the concept, than I am all for it.

New players, or casual gamers would be turned off by it very quickly. They would crash a car, and realize they have no money to fix it and or to buy a new car. Or after a race they will be lucky to brake even because of front and rear fenders are in very bad shape.
So I see where PD is going with that.

Also what Bones has written! very good points!

+1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

This is what I have been trying to tell people for at least a week, but you put it in great words.

In a way, I agree with this.

If the damage is affected by the level system, then I see it as a "probationary" period after getting your licences - in real life in Australia we have a very similar system, whereby you have to drive with "P" plates on your car for a few years before you get a full licence.

In effect, getting to level 40 (which looks like it'll take a few weeks of racing to do) would be the same as this probationary period, after which full rights are instated (damage, mechanical problems, etc). For the rest of the game, you'd have simulation damage.

This theory still begs the question though - why not give the user a choice!? Hopefully once the game is launched we'll at least have an explanation from polyphony for things being the way they currently are - I'm not surprised there's been no comment from them seeing as they haven't released the game yet...
