The FIFA Bribe Scandal...

A joint Swiss-American operation has seen several senior FIFA figures arrested on corruption, racketeering and wire fraud charges relating to tournament hosting, broadcast deals and sponsor arrangements:

Webb is the current and Warner a former CONCACAF president, Figueredo the, Warner is current president of CONMEBOL and Leoz the former president, Li is the president of the Costa Rican football federation, Marin is a former president of the Brazilian football federation, and I can't find out who Rocha, Takkas and Esquivel are.

Preliminary rumours but apparently the kickbacks and slushfunds were paid into American bank accounts. Idiots!

FIFA executives arrested? My heart bleeds.

Only downside is that Friday's FIFA election is going on as normal. Unbelievable! His position has long been untenable and this is surely the last straw? This farce happened on his watch. He is the one in charge of what is now a very, very rotten apple. To say "It's nothing to do with me" is unacceptable.

Like the newspaper editors who claimed they knew nothing about phone hacking, he's either a liar for covering it up or an idiot for not noticing. Both are grounds for removal.

Hopefully, football gets justice. The idea of a Qatari World Cup was simply madness.

Sadly none of this surprises me much. Qatari attitudes often seem to be "if we can't get it, throw money at it until we do", due to the insane wealth they mostly have. And i've seen that attitude myself first hand with some people I know...

At the very least there ought to be a re-run of the bidding process for 2022, but that will probably mean lawsuits against FIFA from both the countries that lost out to Qatar and a massive lawsuit against FIFA from Qatar it is is stripped of the 2022 World Cup. Somehow, I can't see Qatar losing the World Cup now, even though it really should if it turns out the process was as corrupt as it looks to be.

I don't care how soon it is but the same thing out to happen for Russia too. I'd happily not have a World Cup in 2018 and delay the next one until 2022 if it meant a fair and due process and the elimination of all the corruption in the sport's world governing body of all things.

Hey, they the one who 🤬 national footballs up, especially here.

I knew the sport ministry didnt far off on his decision to temporarily blocked off FIFA.

From what I've read so far, FIFA currently has no intentions of re-voting on both 2018 and 2022. I think they should redo 2022 for sure, but like you said, it'll wind up being a slippery slope that might have significant consequences. At this point, it seems like the damage is done, but for all we know, this could just be the tip of the iceberg in the FIFA corruption scandal.

Hopefully now the FBI and Swiss Government are involved the truth will finally come out.

I have no idea how Blatter can remain in his position. Even if he's not directly involved in any of the illegal stuff, he's presided over this organisation for many years and has done nothing to improve the accountability or transparency. If this was a public company the share holders would have evicted him years ago.

Both should be investigated (and in a perfect world both re-allocated), but the logistics of 2022 are a nightmare.

Hands up who think Blatter will get in for a fifth time

Owen Gibson has the names of the 10 individuals, all currently listed as current Fifa executive committee members, who will now be questioned by Swiss authorities over the 2018/22 World Cup bids. Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini, as Swiss residents, are not included, but will also presumably be questioned.

Issa Hayatou (president of the Confederation of African Football),
Angel Maria Villar Llona (Spain),
Michel D’Hooghe (Belgium),
Senes Erzik (Turkey),
Worawi Makudi (Thailand),
Marios Lefkaritis (Cyprus),
Jacques Anouma (Ivory Coast),
Rafael Salguero (Guatemala),
Hany Abo Rida (Egypt)
Vitaly Mutko (Russia – head of the 2018 World Cup and sports minister).
