The FIFA Bribe Scandal...

Visa’s Updated Statement on FIFA

May 27, 2015

Our disappointment and concern with FIFA in light of today’s developments is profound. As a sponsor, we expect FIFA to take swift and immediate steps to address these issues within its organization. This starts with rebuilding a culture with strong ethical practices in order to restore the reputation of the games for fans everywhere.

Visa became a sponsor of FIFA because the World Cup is one of the few truly global sporting events with the power to unite people from around the world through a common love of football. Our sponsorship has always focused on supporting the teams, enabling a great fan experience, and inspiring communities to come together and celebrate the spirit of competition and personal achievement – and it is important that FIFA makes changes now, so that the focus remain on these going forward. Should FIFA fail to do so, we have informed them that we will reassess our sponsorship.

I don't know, but "blatter" sounds like the fatty stuff that gets left in the frying pan after cooking a pork chop.

Blatt is a leaf or piece of paper. Blätter is the plural.

So.. his name is approximately Joseph Pieces Of Paper. Somewhat appropriate for a culture of bribes and kickbacks. Joseph Many Pieces Of Paper In Haliburtons.

That the US Justice Department has any real interest in soccer or intends to rid the world of corruption is likely very false.

The motives for this investigation are likely anger for losing the bids to host the games. (The Clinton Foundation received nowhere near enough kickback and bribe offers?) Some voters are angry about bankster corruption on Wall Street, so since the administration won't be doing what Elizabeth Warren wants done about the issue, it will be seen to arrest some corrupted foreigners instead. It can do this if any of their corruption-laden emails used US servers or fraudulent transactions used US banks.

It remains to be seen how much foreign governments are going to attempt extradition of their citizens to the US for trial.

The hoped-for end-game is get the filthy lucre from hosting the games.

Why would the FBI care?

Even according to FIFA, the investigation is happening because FIFA themselves instigated it.

Dotini
or fraudulent transactions used US banks.
Apparently this is the case, hence why the FBI (and the IRS) are interested/involved.

Even if FIFA wanted to run the bidding process again and opened it up tomorrow, it would be extremely difficult to get a new host nation lined up for 2018.
2018 is plenty of time - the USA and Australia could host it this summer if they wanted to... even the UK could probably manage it by next year.

Of course the FBI doesn't care. They bark or bite when the AG or the Prez says so.

Hasn't FIFA been initiating go-nowhere investigations for years?

I say this investigation is all about politics and money, and little to do with the justice of the US policing the world.

Agreed, but try telling that to Vladimir Putin!
No worries about Putin, matey.

The US needs him and Russia badly, whether they fully realize it or not. In the end, there will be a modus vivendi and a quid pro quo with Russia. Our wars will be with others.

Let's keep the wars on the pitch, in countries suitable to host such international events.

Yes! And with the right crowd and no crowding. :D

I bet Russia keeps its games, and that hellhole on the gulf does not.

Not that Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan is the ideal replacement. Luis Figo needs to throw his hat back into the race.

I'd guess the same because "ermagerd its too soon" even though as I say, I'd happily skip 2018 and carry on from 2022 with new candidates.

This could go the way of boxing. New bodies and breakaways.

I don't think that you could reasonably exclude Qatar from a re-vote. Not unless you could prove that they won because of corrupt influence - and that will be hard, since they won by a fair margin.

This thread's original purpose was reporting that Qatar bribed FIFA officials. That's grounds for exclusion, if true.

For the current round of arrests...

They were arrested in Switzerland, so the Swiss courts will decide if they get extradited or not.... the individuals Governments may object, but that's a diplomatic issue rather than a legal issue. And not many countries have much diplomatic influence over the Swiss - they are highly independent and well able to stand on their own 2 feet.

Michel Platini, UEFA president, has just said that Blatter should step down and that all world football federations should support Prince Ali bin al-Hussein...

If FIFA don't cancel the vote UEFA should withdraw.

Qatar won the vote 14-8 over the USA. However, there should have been 24 votes in total, but two FIFA Executive Committee members were suspended over corruption charges before the vote. Subsequently, another 5 have been suspended or found guilty of accepting bribes, and another 10 are/were wanted for questioning. That's 17 out of 24, or 15 out of 22 who actually voted.

Of course, the alleged corruption in the bidding process is just one reason to consider stripping Qatar of the World Cup and banning them from standing in a re-vote. Unless working and living conditions for laborers in Qatar drastically improve, it is estimated that some 4,000 people will have died by 2022 as a direct result of working on construction sites specifically for the World Cup... that's something like 62 dead for every game. This is a good enough reason alone to consider Qatar's position - and a good enough reason for any sponsor worth their salt/beer/burgers/credit cards to disassociate themselves from the tournament.

If it is proven that Qatar did in fact bribe enough FIFA Executive Committee members to change the result of the vote, then it's a no-brainer that the vote should be taken again, preferably without Qatar standing. That does beg the question, however - would Qatar ever be able to stage the World Cup in the event they are proven to have bought the vote? It was my understanding that FIFA have already reported that at least one vote for Qatar was bought, and therefore calls into question the validity of the entire vote.

It is also important to note that the original purpose for the FIFA summit in Switzerland was to discuss whether to ban Israel from world football. That's kind of become tertiary news following the arrests.

Blatter about to speak at FIFA Congress

Youtube comments are killing me.

Some of the live comments are hilarious... as is the yodeling.

If ever there was a video that needed the live comments disabled, this has to be it.
