Both Riho Iida (Rin from LL) and Kusuda Aina (Nozomi from LL) caught my attention, as they had large posters from an album signing. Didn't recognise any others.

Time to call @SVX because he likes LL and therefore will approve this quote

Ok, that side, not bad. I guess they were very popular guests, given that they had large posters representing them...
Also, the heck is that Full Frontal avatar? I get it that there is a girl next to him that isn't from Gundam, but who is she? Eli from LL?

Yeah I talked to him about it on Facebook yesterday haha. It's Eli.

You should've seen the conversation we had Saturday, haha!
Once we got Love Live into the mix (no pun intended), I wound up listening to a few chosen songs in the process. And guess what happened; now said songs are difficult to get out of my head, being so darn catchy (in the good way)... Ironically enough, I am listening to an Eli song right about now. Her renditon of "Kaguya No Shiro De Odoritai", to be more precise.

So I binged Erased in past 2 days and I must say it was a nice suspense filled ride indeed.

My only issue was that when the mystery was solved it lacked impact and I kinda predicted it.

Despite that, it's worth a recommendation.

Now to see that sweet show....

I didn't think it was her at first! That is funny.

Speaking of Eli I've just had a ridiculous art battle over Discord. I was posting Eli, someone else was posting Kotori. I ended up looking through a lot of pics.

I've decided I'm ordering a Pizza tomorrow. (Eli + pizza = magnificence, Hanayo looks like she smoked all the weed, and even here they have time for NicoMaki...)

The best pic of mu's I have ever seen. Everybody looks absolutely perfect here.

First time posting in this thread. Since it was rated so highly by fans, I decided to give Akira a go, just to see the hype. I couldn't understand a single thing that happened in it. Unfortunately, the version I saw also had a crappy dub. I will say that the visuals were awesome, though.

Could you guys recommend some good films that are free to watch online? I haven't watched any other anime shows/movies before, so I'm new to the genre.

In before guys say Boku no Pico.

Don't watch that....

Didn't notice your new location, but I'm guessing you're back home now. When did you depart from Nippon, sir? And what SFW souvenirs did you get you are comfortable to share?

Yeah, I've been back home for months. Left Japan early January. Pretty sure I've already shared most of the cool stuff I got there, SFW or otherwise... didn't really make souvenir acquisition a priority towards the end, mostly just focused on re-visiting my favorite places and eating all the things. I failed spectacularly in this mission, as I am already dying for some Matsuya or CoCo Ichibanya. Although there are apparently some CoCo's in California, so I guess that's where I'm moving to eventually.

Define "free". As in... available on a streaming service you subscribe to (i.e. Netflix)? Just plain "free" doesn't usually exist legally, and thus can't really be discussed here. Besides, if we were gonna go down that rabbit hole... just about anything can be found for free online, right?

But in any case, some good films I'd recommend:

Tokyo Godfathers - A bit Forrest Gump-y in the sense that you just have to accept some comically absurd scenarios and strings of unlikely coincidences, but if you're able to do that... you'll be able to enjoy what is possibly one of the best Christmas movies of all-time. As such though, you might wanna save it for... y'know... Christmas time.

Princess Mononoke - When a friend introduced me to this one when I was 13, I wasn't interested in watching it at first. C'mon, princesses? I'll pass. But don't let your machismo sneer at the title... it doesn't even really have a princess in it, anyway. It's a great, dramatic action-filled film with a good (if somewhat overbearing, in some people's opinons) message. Gorgeous animation to boot. My only criticism is that the ending drags on a bit. Not Return of the King-level, but it's a bit annoying if you're impatient like I am.

Summer Wars - This is an extremely well rounded film... it's really got it all: Action, comedy, drama, romance and more. And it's not just a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none either... It's expertly executed from start to finish, and my enjoyment of this film has only increased with every subsequent re-watch.

5 Centimeters Per Second - Consider skipping this one if romance isn't really your cup of tea, but really it's worth watching for the gorgeous visuals alone. And it's not a sappy Hollywood-esque girly romcom or anything like that, it's short, sweet and realistically subdued (Until they nail you with a beautiful montage ending that'll just wreck you if you have even just a single sappy bone in your body)... So consider giving it a shot if you've got an open mind, even if you don't usually do romance.

Sword of the Stranger - This one's got a simple, straightforward plot that's bolstered by likeable characters. Great for when you need a rest from more heady stuff, or if you just like your stories that way. The real draw here is the sweet gorgeously animated action on display.

Ghost in the Shell - Speaking of heady, this one is just that. Great animation for its time, and still holds up well today. So basically... it's got a lot in common with Akira in that regard. It is a lot less trippy than Akira though, so that might make its flavor of headiness more to your liking than the "wth did I just watch?" nature of Akira. The sequel, Innocence, is also really good too.

Looked up CoCo. Need to try that curry to see how they compare to the pre-packaged boxed curry you can find in Asian grocery stores here.

You want good visuals? Garden of Words.

You want visuals and good story? Garden of Sinners.

Well, I found Akira free to watch on YouTube. I'd prefer if it isn't necessary to sign up for a service to watch something, especially if it's a subscription-based platform. Thanks for the recommendations. I'll write them down later. 👍

I can vouch for this. Absolutely splendid to watch, keeping you on your toes until the end. It's abit of a ride, not like a emotional rollercoaster per se but stuff just keeps happening. They really paced this film pretty damn well, in a manner that you can't really get bored.

SVX
Yeah, it's pretty old. I much preferred the spin off, Railgun, to Index though. Far more compelling and interesting story.
I will check it out. Does this series run in the same universe as Robotic Notes and Steins Gate?

Log Horizon is that but they do not know what happens.

Yep, no problem. And don't forget that trailers are a thing... sometimes it's best to see which ones personally look appealing to you rather than just taking recommendations blindly, even if trailers are sometimes a bit spoilery and/or misleading.

Hey now, that makes it sound like Garden of Words doesn't have a good story!

To be fair, it wasn't great. Certainly not Makoto Shinkai's best in that regard. But it was decent.

I still need to get around to Garden of Sinners. Watched the first one and it didn't really grab me, but perhaps it gets better as it goes?

Sailor Moon Tings

Folded up dress to look like a skirt. Noice.

Generally I spend about a few episodes speculating what the story is about, what the protag's goal, why they have their goals, how they came to be, who is the obstacle and why. If I can't figure out these things, or if there is more to learn / to be revealed, I'll keep watching. Most shows I stop watching are ones that don't have some obstacle for the protag to overcome, or if it's really reallllly predictable.

But no, unless you're a supernatural connoisseur, you've got a lot to learn about this show, the way its world works, why she does the work she does and the reason for her personality.

Remember, we can't publicly discuss piracy or torrents here.

Also, there is no bad dub of Akira, unless you're watching in Estonian. The official English dub is perfectly fine, even if they skip over the more esoteric philosophical parts.

-

If you're looking for deep story and cinematic action, Ghost in the Shell is a good place to start. If you're looking for an animated mind-🤬 that still runs basically like a movie but gives you more insight into the Japanese psyche, Perfect Blue or Paprika will tickle your fancy.

The story-telling in these is more linear, with fewer of the tropes and pitfalls of series-type anime.

-

You can also basically plunge into any Studio Ghibli film and feel right at home, as well, but these are mostly family movies, so don't expect any hardcore action, unless you're watching Princess Nausicaa or Princess Mononoke.

So for giggles I decided to look up my oldest post here in TGAT... Or at least the oldest one I could reasonably find.

Watched Jyu-Oh-Sei today, it was pretty damn good.
(On the 4th of July? Seriously? I guess I had that day off from Super Fun Navy School, so it makes sense, but still...)

Well, I haven't watched Jyu-Oh-Sei since then, but I still stand by my opinion here. :P

Y'all should check it out if you haven't. It's nice and short. A bit too short, arguably... But it's still solid.

Oh, and feel free to look up your most ancient TGAT posts, too.
