I'd attribute most of the decline to the decline in the US's economy. Piracy may have an effect on sales... but it's not as cut-and-dry as saying that if somebody pirates something, it's an actual sale lost. I downloaded the first couple episodes of NGE in 2010, which is technically piracy, and it led to me buying a bunch of Evangelion stuff.

Sure, there are some people who genuinely just pirate for the sake of getting crap for free. But I don't think it has nearly as big of an impact to the market as you'd think.

I know, it's as long as they go back in the end and buy the show, whether it be the DVD, BD, or legal digital downloads at places like iTunes, PlayStation Store, Zune on Xbox Live, etc.

If you love something, you should support it, that's what I believe. I gladly supported Rurouni Kenshin when I bought this as I absolutely loved Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal. It may have been $65 for 4 30 minute OVA episodes, but it was well worth it to me.
