It's best if you start with og Steins;Gate, S;G 0 needs some context from the former first to be enjoyed properly. Thanks @DK, I just watched a few seconds of Chainsaw Man between ads and it reminded me I also enjoyed Hellsing and Vampire Hunter D! The only series of Steins;Gate on Crunchyroll is Steins;Gate 0 which is an alternate timeline or something - any harm in starting there?
Umm... Yeah. Would appreciate some guidance on what else I could watch to make a subscription worthwhile, please and thank you!
Perfect Blue rings a bell, I might've seen that, I was trying to remember the name of a film that I was sure had "blue" in the title. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out!I used to rave heavily about Steins;Gate here when it was airing, but in hindsight I do agree the beginning feels like it's not going anywhere. It's a slow start, but I had attributed that as part of living through the experience of a timeline.
So you've listed off a bunch of older shows, so I'm unsure how open you are to newer things. It does sound like you're after serious shows that are well written. In which case I will always recommend:
-1st season of Psycho Pass
-Shinsekai Yori (From the New World)
-Monster
-Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
-Samurai Champloo
-Bokurano
-Paprika
-Perfect Blue (I need to rewatch this)
-a handful of Ghibli films.
And because you lean towards Sci-Fi:
-Ghost in the Shell
Are you open to dramas/supernatural, stuff that isn't typically accepted by people (usually dudes) for lacking action and "cool" things?
I'm not drawn in by school/student themes, but there have been shows that have been touching for me for the character building/growth throughout the series.
I just thought of it as a Shonen version of spy x familyI finished off DanDaDan this morning. It's a solid show, it's just a shame that Netflix have pulled repeated the same stunt they did with JoJo Stone Ocean's gaps between releases.
I say that, but I've also just started Sakamoto Days. Shin is just Eric Elric with blue eyes and a 5head, change my mind.
Get in the ******* robot, Shuji.
Started rewatching Bokurano the other day... man, this show is great.
Madoka's good, riffing off of Bokurano's main plot but in a magical girl context... but I think the thing that sets the two apart is that Madoka, being a condensed 12 episodes in comparison to Bokurano's 24, is a lot more focused on just delivering that main plot. And to be fair, it does that exceptionally well... though it does perhaps make the whole package come across as a little bit juvenile/edgelordy grimdark. Bokurano in comparison is afforded the time to focus on its large cast of characters, and it does so with a very high degree of maturity, restraint, and compassion/understanding. Even if Bokurano is arguably darker than Madoka, it feels much more interested in using its premise to explore and convey meaningfully humanist stories rather than just settle for the dark & edgy surface story.
It may seem like I'm being pretty hard on Madoka here, so don't get it twisted... I think Madoka's very good. And I'm not saying it's devoid of any good characterization or emotionally affecting storytelling... it just leans a lot more simplistic in that specific regard compared to Bokurano.
Hi there. I have a happy moment to share.
Last Sunday, Aya Hirano (the voice of Haruhi Suzumiya and many others) performed with a concert in Moscow (on a culture event called "Hinode Japan"), and I've been there.
It is amazing that she came to Russia during this time, you know.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was one of the first titles that brought me to anime addiction, and hearing Aya Hirano singing those opening songs in person was something I couldn't even dream about a year ago. But it happened.

Unfortunately, I didn't get her autograph, there were too many people lining up for it (however, some of my friends managed to get it), but her performance was enough to make me happy. That was unforgettable.
On the first photo, I can see myself and my friend nearby. A moment of history.
As for the autograph... Maybe I'll have another chance sometime 😌
