Except in 1979 it was incredibly different. So different in fact it actually created it's own genre of mecha anime. Granted, it didn't do very well (In fact, MSG was actually cancelled short of it's originally-intended 52 episode run) but instead of 'super robots', Gundam introduced 'real robots'. Very few mecha anime if any at all (that I'm aware of anyway, feel free to enlighten me...and no that's not sarcasm) can tell the kind of stories MS Gundam can. Even to this day (with few exceptions like SEED and G-Saviour...which is just ass; SEED is just re-telling a contemporary version of the OYW) many of them still can't. Wanna know why?
Despite the robots being the mainstay, that's not the point of the story being told. Not one bit. That's the one thing many people either miss or completely misinterpret.
Of course it hasn't. Why alter what isn't severed?
And at the same exact time...the story being told has changed several times.

And it's still influential to this day. Show me another anime that has actually inspired/spawned a real-life science academy. Show me another anime that has it's own cafe. Show me another anime that has actively inspired scientists to explore the possibilities of space migration and the construction of actual, inhabitable space colonies. I'll give you an easy one: show me another anime that has it's own airplane.
That last one is a joke (although it actually does have it's own airplane, and models based off of the color scheme). Fallen into a black hole? Not even remotely.
Had it ended 20 years ago it wouldn't be the legend it is now. Also, had it ended 20 years ago so much of it's illustrious story wouldn't have been told, which would have left many overall stories left incomplete and butchered.

Fuji-Q HighLand theme park has an entire section called Evangelion: World and a few cars in Super GT are decked out in EVA livery. A ton of traffic cones in Japan are plastered with stickers of EVA characters for no reason. Also I have a little Rei figure my friend brought me back last February from a Japanese 7-Eleven.
That's about it I guess.
EDIT: Oh yeah the special edition Doritos and UCC coffee cans and that glasses company someone mentioned though I don't know if Rei has actually been used in their ads or if those were just fanart being funny.
EDIT EDIT: The SH-06A NERV phone from Rebuild 2 made by DoCoMo. The 20,000 unit pre-order sold out in 5 hours. I've only seen one for sale and they wanted $1,000 for it lol.

For me, anime is about having the freedom to tell stories which are relevant to our lives without being constrained by live action restrictions, plus some glitz and glam entertainment value sugarcoating.
Gundam has built its franchise around space robots with individual pilots fighting out the political arguments of the day. The action is regularly great, the overall plots are usually okay. The interpersonal friendship and romantic relationships are the true foundation of Gundam. Always a core set of characters coming together, discovering they have some philosophical/political conflict which keeps them from being able to be friends/more than friends, and the often tragic resolution of that conflict. Very real life relevant.
Repeating a message over the years in ways which are visually and stylistically refreshed is not a bad thing. It's been said, every good story has already been told. Yes, and we need to keep retelling them for every generation.
Gundam's not great mind-blowing entertainment, but it's mostly consistently solid good storytelling, and enjoyable. And after a while, it's like an old friend you're happy to see again.

Seems Fuji-Q loves the popular ones; Gundam has two amusement attractions there. Gundam had a phone as well, two (I think) based off the Zaku's color scheme...I don't know which phone it was, it wasn't sold here so I didn't care.
Seems NGE and Gundam has more in common (as for as popularity goes) than I'm even aware of.
That's only a large portion of what Gundam's story really is. 👍

Having only seen Gundam Wing I can't talk much about the franchise as a whole however I do like how political Gundam stories seem to be. It's one of the reasons I'd like to watch more Gundam (and I will be starting Gundam 00 soon) but I'd like to start it all from the beginning. The problem is I have no idea where to start (besides asking T-12) and I've heard some of the series are just garbage. It's kind of intimidating now to just jump in because there is so much out there.

I haven't seen them all, but I'm not sure it matters how you watch them. They're not even all in the same universe, kind of. I've seen 00 and 08th MS, both recommended, watching (slowly) Zeta, also very good. Have Turn A in my queue. I'd say start with any of these.

I know Gundam is huge however for that franchise I can see why.
NGE is huge also but I really don't understand why that is. People have talked about in here what that show has done for anime and how different it was and yeah I agree but watching the show it doesn't seem to me like a lot of people would like it. Don't get me wrong I'm glad they do because it's my favorite anime and if a ton of other people like it then that's more stuff I get to buy 👍 lol.
I am getting excited to be starting 00. I'll be sure to check out some of these as well.
EDIT: T-12 I don't think we got our mobile suit or Yoko for today.

You can't watch Zeta without having seen MSG, considering Z is the direct sequel.
You can watch ANY (just as jeff alludes to) of the alternate timeline series' in any order you want...however, in the case of Turn A and Gundam X it'd be best to have at least a general understanding of the OYW, and in the case of Turn A it'd be best if you understood why everything is referenced at one point or another.
And, jeff, Turn A is weird and incredibly different (and weird). If it freaks you out at first...it's completely normal. Prepare thyself for the mustache.

Ah, Zeta's the direct sequel. Could tell there was a lot of referencing I was missing, but honestly, as a stand alone series, I get enough of what's going on and can overlook my ignorance of political history, so that I can appreciate the drama and the action on its own. But I'll have to go back and watch the original someday to see the beginning of Char and Amuro, the Zabis, etc.

G Gundam essentially takes what Gundam thrived as and turns it inside out. G Gundam is basically super robot paradise. I love it...not because it's so different from any other series in Gundam, but precisely because it IS different. Make any sense?
As for SEED I'll be 100% honest with you -- I hate it, not because it tries so hard to retell the OYW and be a contemporary reboot of the original it basically has no merit to me. If I've already seen the original why would I want to see this? Not because everything is an acronym, or everyone basically looks exactly alike, and not even because Jesus Yamato is more hax than Heero Yuy (think about that for a second). There are so many Gundams in SEED it basically doesn't even warrant the presence of the GINN's, the GOUF's, the ZAKU's (wanna know why they're capitalized? They're all acronyms), or any of the other grunt-type suits. I hate it because it's entire purpose (the way I see it anyway) is to be a contemporary Mobile Suit Gundam. Pretty much any and everything from MSG is ripped off.
That's why I hate it. Do I have anything positive that would sway you into watching it? Sure, I may not like it but it's popular for a reason. I don't know what that reason is of course because I stopped at episode 2, but SEED proved to be the best series amongst some fans since Zeta. The animation, the action, all of it = great.

It's hard to explain. Only thing I can say without ranting any further is first impressions are everlasting. I even vowed to give Destiny the chance I never gave to SEED. Wanna know how many episodes I made it through?

So... got to episode 8 of NGE and now I can't find a stream of it that will work. videobb won't work for me(it does this sometimes). Megavideo works, but I can't find a stream that hasn't been taken down.

No, Haruhi caused the 15000 loops because she felt she didn't do everything during the summer break. It was pretty much all because Kyon didn't do his homework.
Everyone's memories reset at the end of the break, with the exception of Nagato. So she was aware of everything that happened for about 5 or 600 years. You can see in every episode her expression gets progressively sadder. She couldn't stop the loop because her job was to only observe.
