After my little race tonight I will be fooling about with a couple of bongo solos. Also this thing NEEDS a shaker. I'm not even thinking about recording till I get me one.

Ive just re-read the original thread, which dated back to april 2003.
Alot of people were interested, but the idea did not result in some real music.
Thats why pako and me decided to go ahead and record something easy and simple, not only chord wise but also on the editing side. ( we can now copy and paste parts easily , and adjust the rhythm-bass-guitar parts easily in lenght).
The track we posted has a short head/intro, then the first part twice ( 2x 12bars), followed by the chorus which is also played twice.(2X12 bars).
I think thats a good amount of playtime for one to improvise over.
However, it depends on how many people want to join.
When there are only 3 people replying it maybe a little short. ;)

This weekend im sending pako the final rhythm track, which will probably be the same amount of bars.

Fair enough...as a jazz musician I'm used to solos being much longer than even 48 bars. :P I am totally fine with a short solo, I'm just worried that if we get more than 4 people who want to solo, they won't have any solo space. But, I still think solo order should be established so we aren't stepping on each others' solos. :P

Two soloists stepping on each other's toes is just called a duet. :P

Do you play any instruments yourself TB?
I could hold a steady beat on their drum set and could fill in if the drummer couldn't make it to practice but other than that, no. I have a decent ear so mixing their vocals, 2 guitars and bass suited me well. :)

This sounds really nice. I play a bit of guitar and since a few weeks i am really learning how to play guitar with Rocksmith 2014. Just wonder how to collaborate our record something. I have an old laptop with a mic connector. Will that do? What kind of software can I use to record?

I am a complete noob with this....

Audacity is a free download and is a really simple and easy to use recording software. I use it for all my multitracks. It's available for Windows or Mac, but I'd imagine if you have a Mac you could also just use Garage Band.

  1. 1:30 AM on a Monday. Can't sleep, work in a few hours.
  2. Sit 30 minutes on my Clavinova digital piano.
  3. Begin the lamest "Improv" session ever.
  4. Post song to GTP's collaboration thread.
  5. ???
  6. Profit!
I'm way too bored and I can't sleep. I suck at improvising, I really do, all I could come up with is some lame arpeggio-like combination for the posted chords. I'm a sheet music guy, I play the usual repertoire, with an added ragtime and jazzy piece here and there but I couldn't improv to save my life... :(

Let it not be said that GTPers don't contribute to the music project, however lame the contributions may be.

PS: I only did the first part.

EDIT: Ha! someone just liked it.

A week on, and I STILL can't get the house free. And if people are in they'll mess up the recording, I can't do anything about that irritatingly.

First page is edited, be sure to check out the sound clip and provide your tracks. :)

Could use some horn accents, keys, harp, would be great to have a couple different leads, vocals, start jammin and share your track.

Is this still going? If so, I could try to write & record a horn section for it to beef up the backing track.

I don't think anyone wants me to provide a solo since I'm awful at solos (can do those classic crappy rock n roll kind of solos only).

So, if you want Horns, all I need is to know the bpm & a little time. I'm tied up at work 'til Monday :/

At www.youtube.com/user/ell470 you can hear some of what I can do.

ps. I can make much better sounding horn sections now than on my song "24 channels", I use a newer better VSTi.

@ell470, its still going on!
And yes we need horn sections /stabs and solo.
Now at the moment its only drums-bass-and rhythm guitar so its still a little empty.
Some well placed stabs could bring it a step further.

Alrighty then! I'll give it a shot during Monday/Tuesday next week :)

Oh, and what's the songs bpm? We want the finished song to be really tight and smooth, yes? (I could figure this out by myself, but it's just faster if someone tells me) ;)

We will be waiting patiently :)

One notice though, since a real drummer is hard to find on gtp (or they dont now this thread is up), i did the drumparts myself.
These drumparts are loops, but they are recorded with a real drummer, so if you would run these loops with a clicktrack-metronome, you would notice the drummer is just a little tiny behind the beat sometimes, which makes the drumparts alive but a little hard to record something in advance just using the clicktrack.
So if someone sends a track thats recorderd with just a clicktrack they are probably out of sync.
So my best guess is just using the backingtrack instead.
I will let you know about the bpm in a minute

edit: @ell470
The track runs @ 105 bpm

Hey there. Wonderfully, I will be back in action once my sister-in-law has given birth, meaning that my brother will move out and the entire top half of the house becomes my domain again. Due date is a week today...eeeeeeep I'm excited. Both for recording AND becoming an uncle.

Also I switched out my pathetic wooden guiro for a big awesome black plastic mother of one. That will be getting some use here, yup.

Thats great news!
Im really curious with what you come ip with!

I can convert the drums to Superior Drummer 2.0 & quantize them if you guys want to, but then you'll probably have to re-record the rythm guitar & bass part.

If so, just let me know! Will put a few hours down on the horn sections on Monday &/or Tuesday :)

I'm excited :)

Excellent! Should have a solid groove laid down by then.

I checked out your 24 Channels last night. Haha, great tune man. Cool video. Fun to watch. 👍

Thank you! Glad you liked it :)

Yeah, I've been sitting on that one for a while now, that recording is the 3rd iteration of it since I wrote it about 10 years ago at least. I've been waiting for my gear to be able to produce the sound I'm looking for, upgrading everything piece by piece. Nowadays I can almost produce all the sounds I want. I'm still struggling with getting the right sound for Dubstep, "drop A" guitars for Metalcore & and big band Jazz ensemble. But one day my home studio will get there :)

Edit:
One last question, who will be mixing & mastering the track?

I will break down the song into different files (1 instrument / file) so whoever mixes & masters the track have complete freedom to do so :)

If nobody volunteers, I should be able to do it. 👍

I think they already have someone in mind, otherwise I'm fully capable of it as well. I use Izotope Ozone 4 for mastering & Sonar X1 for everything else.

Izotope is pretty amazing! 👍

Yeah, I really like it. It may not be the best out there (since hardware still kick softwares butt), but it's versatile enough for me to do all kind of genres sound good :)

@DonJo76
I've been listening to the track a few times & I have to say: I really like the crisp guitar sound you managed to get. What guitar & rig are you using?

Thanx @ell470 , the guitar im using on this track is a fender strat srv sig. edition.
Its one of the 13 guitars i have, and yes i can play them all at the same time!
Dont ask me how though :)
Amps im using are a fender pro reverb silverface(early 80's i think), a fender cyberdeluxe, and a fender deville 60 watts.

As for the recording rigs,
Im an ableton live 9 user, with Komplete ultimate as my vst engine, and propellerheads reason as a rewire slave.
So for guitar sounds i can use guitar rig5, which i mostly use as an insert effect.
Most of the time i use my trusty old boss gt10 for my guitarsounds, record 2 signals, one dry (for use with guitar rig 5) and one wet gt-10 signal so im inspired to play.

The interfaces i use now are from tascam, a us-1641 and when im downstairs i use a us-366,
which are nice products but dont quite match my old emu 1616m.

The guitar sounds i used on the demo comes from the boss gt-10, although the 1.1 version ( which will be online very soon) uses the guitar rig 5 vst.

Nice Ovation guitar in the back! Or is it an Applause (considering they're pretty much the same anyway)? How do you like it as an acoustic guitar? Because I was thinking of getting one at some point.
