Things I've just read in the linked article make my blood boil in anger

Egypt needs to be shamed throughout the World for allowing this to happen.
Egypt, or the ruling government? Let's not confuse the beat of the leaders with the pulse of the people. Same deal in America, most people don't care, just a few outliers, some of which somehow made it into governement.

Naturally I meant the people in a position of power with the ability to do something about it.

Got a source for that claim concerning Egypt?

What claim? That a government choice doesn't necessarily match that of the people? You need citation for that?
The claim that it's the same as in the U.S., that most people in Egypt don't care about homosexuality. I don't know whether they do or not but it sounds like you do so I'd like to know how you know that.

Egypt is launching a huge crackdown on LGBT citizens: http://nbcnews.to/2xn6lPB

I am horrified that this is still happening, and that almost nothing can be done to protect these people.
I remember seeing my mother browsing through channels and well...various Egyptian channels were talking about this issue that caused several controversial argument. I remember hearing some comments on how "sissy men needs to be beaten up and man up" or how "all these hypersexual, disgusting sex party and aids spreaders need to stop and behavior well".

Jeez... the amount of negative stereotypes and hate. Where's the governments around the world forcing to take action against these regions when we need them to be? Instead of simply bashing the region, take freaking actions.

Never realized there was a thread on homosexuality here. I’m probably not the only gay simracer here. I’m glad to see the poll results ;)
I wish if I could change my vote because back in 2013, while I was fine with homosexuality, I still considered it a "sin" for involving in actions related to that. :(

Here I am in 2017, still in a denial from time to time but my opinion changed a lot. Realized how I had gay thoughts in middle school before I knew what the word gay ot bi evem means. I'm really glad that I have reached out to people.

It’s not an easy topic so I totally understand how someone might change opinions over time. I also thought it was horrendous before I finally accepted my sexuality. I even insulted many gays before I did come out. Shame is a powerful tool to suppress one’s hability to express himself.

So they're probably about in the 1980s. Another 40 years or so might see them come around. Sucks for an entire generation of gays but.

I'm a man who likes women (women who were born as women/are biologically female), was raised Catholic, here's my thoughts. If LGBT people want to go down to the courthouse and get a piece of paper that says they're married, more power to them, I do not care. They should be free to live their own lives. Just as I should be allowed to live my life the way I want to. Jesus taught "do unto others as they would unto you." That, to me, means the same as live and let live.

You can but it should be noted that your opinion is changed, just so it doesn't look like your opinion is inconsistent.

Ok. My opinion has changed. I have friends who are homosexuals. I believe they should be allowed to live their lives as they choose. If they want to get a piece of paper that say they are married, they should be allowed to. As US citizens, they deserve equality.

Didn't understand what do you mean, Was the 1980's a bad decade for LGBT social wise?
---
Anyways, it doesn't help that you got things like the whole pride thing going on each June which ruins the image for middle eastern LGBT even more. It doesn't help that majority tend to stereotype homosexuals with bathhouses and hook up culture. Nowadays it's a trend to see LGBT characters or story slapped in pretty much every movie, TV show, sitcom or video games right in everyone's faces.

There's far more accepting of Atheists and non practicing religious people (as people who believe in Islam but barely pray or such) than LGBT person. I bet there's people who wants better women rights in Saudi Arabia but not LGBT rights because that's a disgrace to society.

It was better than the seventies but a fair way behind today. The AIDS epidemic forced gay culture out of the shadows and towards the mainstream of society. It looks like you still have a way to go until homosexual people can have parades held in their honour without their existence being questioned and criminalised.

I doubt i'm going to live in a time where people are accepting of Homosexuality in the same way as the western or far eastern society. :(
I mean apart from those average gay internet jokes that the youth like to throw around, it's probably the most stigmatized type of people over here.

Have you thought of moving to an area where being LGBT is accepted?
I wouldn't want to live somewhere that I'll never be happy my whole life.

Originally, i was going to study abroad because universities are far better outside and i always liked the idea of experiencing living in a Western world. Sadly, i didn't have the enough budget and i can't rely entirely on myself for everything. I might do after few years or so but not right now.

Another problem is how do the Society would look at people like me? I have experience rude looks while i was in various countries that i went to on a holiday with my family. I fear that i might experience much worse stuff like discrimination or hate crimes especially after the amount of hate talks i see on the internet. You know the hate for all Middle Easterns because they somehow "ruined" the world? I mean i'm an Arab, with a very few bits of Persian background. How would people in 'Murica would look at me? How would people in Britain might look at me? France? Canada? Australia? Germany?

I feel like i have no choice but stay at home and hide it from everyone else for the rest of my life. I already had several problems with my family recently regarding this.

For the most part, they wouldn't take a second look at you. Brown people are everywhere in Britain, and it's generally not a big deal. I can also say that at universities prejudice is very rarely a problem, and walking around my uni campus I hear all sorts of languages and see all sorts of people, and I've not seen any evidence that racial discrimination is a problem in the university itself. In certain places, yes, you may encounter discrimination, but these places are the exception and not the rule, and the same is generally true in the US. Walk around an average western city and you'll see people of all types living in relative harmony; hate crimes are ridiculously rare and by fearing them you've given the racists what they want.

Don't let your fears prevent you from living your life. And don't judge a group of people based on a small but vocal subgroup on the internet, because your judgement will always turn out wrong. There's some sort of prejudice everywhere and sometimes you just have to deal with it, but reading things on the internet will almost never give you a good idea of what a place is like and how well you'll fit in. And of course, some places are simply less or more prejudiced, and in different ways.

I cant speak for other countries but Canada and specifically southern Ontario is really quite accepting in terms of just seeing a different race in public. Gay people are accepted just as people, there's little discrimination that way as well. Pretty much everyone treats everyone like a human being and I've only met a handful of people who are anti-some-way-of-life-different-to-their-own. Pretty much the only thing we're against is our government spending our money in stupid ways and taking more of it, but that's a topic for another thread.

I’m gay and I live in Montreal and you’d be very well accepted here. I must admit there are racist gays in Montreal but that’s like in any other group of people. I’m lucky to live here and I’m half Syrian-Armenian so I had more issues with family than everyone else.

I'm only one person & can't speak for a whole country but I would like to invite you to study in the UK.

You mentioned budget & I don't want to pry. If you choose to discuss that more, that's up to you.

As to your worries about being accepted, there are hateful people everywhere but I doubt you'd come across as many of them as you fear if you came here. It's certainly possible that you'd find more acceptance here than at home.

Australia?

Australia's fine as far as Middle Easterners go. There's quite a lot of them, and there's quite a lot of other races here in significant proportions as well. We have plenty of racists, but most of us think that they're arseholes.

I dunno about us being accepting of gays though, our government decided to blow a hundred million dollars on a postal vote about gay marriage. When polls have for years shown overwhelming support for it. They're simply trying to avoid doing their jobs and wasting the taxpayers money into the bargain, in the hope that maybe they'll find an excuse so that they don't have to allow gays to marry like normal human beings.

I really, really hate politics sometimes.

I can second this wholeheartedly. I also live in Southern Ontario. Canadians in general are a pretty laid back, live your own life, type of people. Your everyday citizen pretty much minds their own business and is respectful of our differences. I live in a University/College town, I know kids at both campuses and work at both of them on a regular basis. Compared to where you are coming from I think you would be absolutely shocked and amazed at the level of openness, diversity and acceptance for just about anything and everything. Race, ethnicity, colour, sexual orientation, nationality etc. That's not say it's perfect, kids will still be kids and not everyone has fully matured by college/university age, but generally speaking, life in Canada is very open and accepting.

In your average Western country, if you're gay generally speaking people either won't say anything or just won't care. When it comes to race people largely care more about how you dress rather than your skin colour. As an arab you would not stand out at all in London, Birmingham or Cardiff for example.
