What are you talking about? You guys are asking whether homosexuality is a problem that needs to be cured. It's 2022, pull your heads in.

Thread reported
The poll was created in 2003 by a user who had no issue with homosexuals, but had the awareness to realise there are people who do take issue with homosexuality, and so a poll asking for people's views needed to include such an option.

Since there's (presumably) no straightforward way to find out when a poll option was chosen we can't tell who voted when, but I would like to think the bulk of the "a problem that needs to be cured" votes came in 18 years ago and those who did so have had a change of attitude. There's no way of telling that either because the poll doesn't permit changes of answer, and users who were here then and voted may not be here now, so won't be able to tell us they've changed their opinions. This has been mentioned in this thread in the past.

For example, I voted "OK for anybody" because my 16 year old brain didn't understand the difference between that and "nobody's business but the people involved". Now I do, and would vote the latter... but I can't change that now.

Also, despite it being 2022, there are still some who disapprove of homosexuality for whatever reason. That's not going to change if those people aren't given the option to voice those opinions, be challenged on them, and encouraged to reflect on why they feel that way, whether it's an appropriate response to homosexuality, and hopefully arrive at a different conclusion.

Your trolling is bad and you should feel bad.
Not trolling, just calling out poor behaviour. The poll and some of the posts in this thread (not all) are inappropriate and offensive.

There's no place for it in this day and age.

But anyway, that's just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but nobody is entitled to be ignorant.

I'll leave you to it 👍

Can you provide any instances where someone expressed an offensive viewpoint and wasn't countered rather quickly?

I get that it's easier to just banish people with crap views to the nether realm (and in some cases they don't give the mods any option but to do just that), but the only way you will get someone to truly change their backwards views is by engaging them in legitimate conversation. Simply banning them does nothing since there's plenty of places where they can express those views without any opposition.

Welp, it ****ing happened.

A couple of the more interesting portions of the article:

Throughout debate in the GOP-controlled statehouse, Democrats have said the law’s language, particularly the phrases “classroom instruction” and “age appropriate,” could be interpreted so broadly that discussion in any grade could trigger lawsuits and create a classroom atmosphere where teachers would avoid the subjects entirely.

“The bill’s intentionally vague language leaves teachers afraid to talk to their students and opens up school districts to costly and frivolous litigation from those seeking to exclude LGBTQ people from any grade level,” said state Rep. Carlos G. Smith, a Democrat who is gay. “Even worse, #DontSayGay sends a hateful message to our most vulnerable youth who simply need our support.”

Andrew Spar, president of the Florida Education Association, said the law amounts to a political wedge issue for Republicans because elementary schools, especially in kindergarten through third grade, do not teach about these subjects and have state curriculum standards guiding classroom lessons.

“This bill is based on a falsehood, and that falsehood is that somehow we’re teaching kids inappropriate topics at an early age, and clearly we’re not,” Spar said.
Which sums up my thoughts on why this bill is dumb, incredibly damaging, and now puts teachers in a bind where, under these incredibly vague guideline, parents have an incredibly large ability to essentially ruin a teachers life, and possibly even send them to prison, for even mentioning a topic that exists in the real-****ing-world that we all occupy and take part in.
The law’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Joe Harding, has said it would not bar spontaneous discussions about sexual orientation or gender identity in schools but would prevent districts from integrating the subjects into official curriculum. During the bill’s early stages, Harding sought to require schools to inform parents if a student came out as LGBTQ to a teacher. He withdrew the amendment after it picked up attention online.

“Nothing in the amendment was about outing a student...
Bull-****ing-****. My niece is a better liar, and she barely speaks English!
...Rather than battle misinformation related to the amendment, I decided to focus on the primary bill that empowers parents to be engaged in their children’s lives,” he said in a statement.
Which, to me, translates to "people reacted negatively to me introducing openly bigoted legislature that would hurt minors during a very vulnerable time in their lives, so I'm gonna walk it back and tug on emotional ropes in an attempt to make my opponents look like the bad guys."
DeSantis signed the bill after a news conference held at the Classical Preparatory School in Spring Hill, about 46 miles (74 kilometers) north of Tampa. At the ceremony, several young children accompanied DeSantis and other politicians near the podium, with some holding signs bearing the governor’s “Protect Children/Support Parents” slogan. DeSantis gave the children the pens he used to sign the bill.
I genuinely wish it was illegal for politicians, no matter what side of the aisle they occupy, to use children as a vehicle to tug on heartstrings of their supporters. It's gross as hell, especially since the legislation in question is designed to make life harder for other children, but I suppose it's ok since they don't want to acknowledge their existence due to factors that they likely have no control over.

I think over time I've made it quite clear that I have very negative feelings about my states legislature. This is legit the first time that I've honestly thought to myself "I need to get the hell out of Florida." Imo this is actually one of the most un-American pieces of legislation I've ever seen.

And if you're wondering, I am both too tired and too pissed off to actually use the censored emoji.

Edit: So, something that I'm seeing people bring up is that the vagueness of the writing in this law might create opportunities to challenge this if parents claim that they don't want their kids to learn about heterosexuality in the classroom, and seeing how the law does under that scrutiny. Mind you, it's beyond ridiculous that something like that is being considered to challenge an already ridiculous law, but I feel like it'd be the best, fastest way to put it to the test. And that's really sad, honestly.

It would be awesome to see it challenged on someone not wanting their kids to learn about heterosexuality. I cannot wait for:

I'd be lying if I said a small part of me isn't hoping for this, and the entertaining 🤬show that would inevitably follow, but I'd still be majorly disappointed that it had to happen to begin with.

Been a while since I’ve seen a conservative run the, “this is what the bill actually is, and if you don’t support it, it means you’re [x]”.

Recently they've been too busy walking back their decades-long praise of Putin and installing low-level minions who are willing to overthrow what's left of our democracy.

The rat ****er didn't learn from the Will Smith Oscars situation that physical violence isn't an appropriate response to speech you don't like.

I for one, would love to see Tucker banned from television for the next 10 years, though.
So long as it's private actors not availing their services to him--however unlikely that is--I'm right there with you.

I know you’re referencing Will’s punishment, but why stop at 10 years? Ban Tucker from any media platform permanently.

In response to these current events...

As a gay American, I don't even have the energy to be angry at this, just overwhelmingly sad.

Of all the real, concrete problems in this country, this is what our elected officials are doing. There are veterans sleeping on the streets... yet this is the focus.

I feel the same way about the crackdown on trans minors in my home state of Texas.

None of this makes our country, or our world, a better place. All it does is sow more division, hatred, outrage, and ignorance.

So I just went back and read the OP and the first couple of pages of this thread. I find it hard to believe that this thread started in the 21st century. Some of the opinions in here... just wow

Here is the OP. screenshot, because I wanted the quote to show

My reply to the OP is, I don't care why I am gay. I don't think it is genetic, for obvious reasons. But it really doesn't matter.

changes subject

I think we need a proper gay thread for the gay people here. One where gay media, culture and most importantly, those with issues, like coming out, can come for support. Coming out is something you straight people never had to face. It can be terrifying.

I guess this could happen here. But the OP is so outdated. Is @Duke even still here?

Several threads have not so great beginnings due to being more narrow minded at the time and eventually getting a better understanding. I say that as someone who started the Transgender thread really poorly and regret it.

All you have to do is look at the date and realise it could very well be outdated. I barely keep any of my same opinions 5 years ago, I imagine someone posting nearly 20 years ago could have the same thing.

In terms of a "proper Gay" thread, why can't this be a place to talk about Gay topics and support coming out?

Nearly everything, everywhere has turned political. The post before mine was political. How about a non political gay thread.

Genetics is a factor, it's not a single gene or group of genes (as had been hypothesised), but it does have a genetic foundation. It's still not 'settled science' but it's also not something that can be dismissed either

Feel free to start one, the staff would be (I'm sure) more than willing to help ensure it stays on track (for reasons I'm about to expand on).
I guess this could happen here. But the OP is so outdated. Is @Duke even still here?
It's not really the OP that is being outdated here, they are simply setting up a thread and asking questions, but rather the view of the member they are quoting (who has not been active since 2010).

Removing politics from it will be difficult, as every area of life is inherently political, that becomes even more so when you are looking at groups where persecution exists for ideological, religious or other reasons. As long as people are using political influence and power to attempt to remove/restrict rights then politics is a factor.
