the "just plain ugly" car thread

I think I'm probably the only person in the world who likes how the crossfire looks. To me it has some great lines to it, and is a real looker from the back especially in black. The convertible, however, Is quite ugly.

I also find nothing wrong with that Edsel.

The Crossfire looks like a dog relieving itself to be quite honest, I hate everything about that car.

And the new Dodge Ram is quite ugly, although it's never really be a good looking truck.

Tornado: the "horse collar" grill (which is why I mentioned the first gen Tribeca...they seem to have imitated the 58 edsel design), is only the worst on the 58's themselves. it's more subtle on the 59's, and was eliminated from the 60's design book.
the second gen tribeca went from edsel imitation to bland nobody :P one extreme or the other.

Lord Prower: yes, but 58/9 were the peak of the chromesmobiles. edsel's and some of the full size mercs were the worst offenders of overfinned taste I'd ever seen. even Caddy was more subtle.

nobody seems to like honda's current "vicious" look but me :P
the fastback on the crossfire isn't right. I can now see where the US got it's distaste for anything that isn't Square Cut (and, for God's sake, Chrysler, get rid of those hood ridges. )

Joey D: the reason the ram and F were redone allready is cause the Silverado/Sierra got such a damn good-looking facelift (the new regular F has the look of the current Super-dutes and E's)

I disagree with everything Bones Brigrade posted on this page o.O

And the Civic got awards in design and it's in here wtf...

Someone's been doing some reading up on my character. How else would you know he (was forced to take) the title of "Lord" when he married Princess Sally?

As for the Edsel: I still don't get why the "Horse Collar" grille was ugly. I guess I'm too used to 159s and A4s to see why big grilles are so bad.

I mean, it's almost EXACTLY the same shape, and proportions, and gearheads drool all over it. Why? because it's Italian?

And does not look like a gaping fish mouth
that said, the Edsel is an interesting design, but I can't help think it's not very good looking. Still, I don't have anything against it.

The PT cruiser was always on my hate list, only because newspaper articles always complained (that and the Honda Element and Scion xB) Now I actually don't mind, since I can see the styling is based off f hot rods, but in a very subtle way. The HHR however, I hate with a passion.

Funny, the PT is a car which I really liked, but my ardor for has cooled. The fact it's grown old and familiar is probably the reason, and I feel the same way about the HHR...In fact, I think DUE to the PT, the HHR's shape has aged on me considerably faster.

Help me jesus, for I understood that reference.

Still, for the time there really wasn't anything stand out ugly when compared to other cars. It simply hasn't aged as well as the other cars of the era.

I sense a returning theme with your posts...

These may be ugly, but I always had a soft spot for the PT Cruiser.

what theme would that be?

awards or not, the front end of the civic is disgusting.

It's curved, and not accompanied by another grille on both sides, and is protrudes far less.

Its angular design complements the other shapes on the fron tend, unlike the Edsel. It has quite a following these days... and it's not a bad-looking machine at all.

I have nothing to post at the moment; I think Sniffs and Jim Prower have already summed up the reasons why many of these cars are here.

I have to disagree with the Civic. I think it does look better than some other cars *cough*Toyota*cough*Nissan*cough* and besides, the Type R looks rather good....

(But then again, the UK Civic looks more awkward..... :indiff:)

Now.... onto something really ugly....

W..... T..... F.....
(yes, this is going into production to replace the Lancia Delta :yuck:)

Someone just posted this in their 'Favorite Cars: 2008' top 5 list. I thought it suited here better.

Take one fugly SUV, give it to a mentalist Swiss 'tuner' and Ladies and gentlemen, i give you the Rinspeed Chopster:

HEY! I happen to like the Cayenne, even though its not suitable for offroading of any kind, its a nice looking SUV. But the Rinspeed...:yuck:

Actually, the Cayenne was found to be quite a mountain goat by Motor Trend in its introductory year.

Indeed, one of the advantages to designing a vehicle like this from the ground up is that it can be good both on road and off road since you aren't basing it off another car or truck.

Yeah, I've thought of getting a Cayenne, equipping it with meaty tires, and taking it through some nasty trails. Something to consider if I won the lottery, I suppose.

Certainly more fitting for this thread than some of the other cars in this thread. I don't think the design has aged well. Curves do not always equal beauty in cars.
