The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Here are my pics for the Audi's next year (Bold is for endurance-only). This is assuming the Porsche drivers are off-limits.

1: André Lotterer, Marcel Fässler, Benoît Tréluyer
2: Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish, Mike Rockenfeller
3: Marc Gene, Loic Duval, Marco Bonanomi

BMW- No pics? Come on. Although I expect it to be painted similarly to the one in my Avatar...

Could've sworn Rocky was a Porsche factory driver too?
Wikipedia says he's an Audi factory driver but was a Porsche junior driver.

Awesome news! I think the street car is a bit bland, but I love the GT3 version they've been racing over in Europe, and I can't wait for a similar GTE version to come to the ALMS!

I was unaware that BMW even made a V8 Z4.... I know they made one with the old M3 I6 in it. How is that legal for homologation?

So it isn't really like the Z4 GT3...

Well, GTE homolagation tends to be abit more strict on the car being related to the Road car if I recall (Though historically the ALMS has tended to be alittle more relaxed then the ACO).

Doesnt appear so. The sDrive means it has their trick gearbox in it.

Meant to say the iDrive version as for whatever reason, the Z4 the GT3 car is based on has been reffered to by the idrive and not by the normal E nomenclature.

They don't make a street Z4 with a V8... yet(?)
Lol! Did I do that?? No they do not sell a V8 Z4, they need to though!
Then how is that legal for GTE? Didn't they get in trouble for the M3 GTR a few years back?

Yes they did! But thank's to the Viper we will start to see some very very flexible rules and concessions in GT-E.

Interesting post I found on speedTV.com:

The first ACO/FIA GT merger meeting was a few weeks back, it was reported in this weeks Autosport they've moved on from the idea of having a single GT car, as they don't think this is practical.

The latest proposal is to retain GT3, which Ratel is happy with, the GTE examples of these cars will use the same base, but the engine and aero will be regulated, that's essentially what the Z4 GTE is.

The one BIG difference in philosophy between GTE and GT3 is the origin of the engine, GT3 allows you to switch them with another from the manufacturer's range, GTE doesn't. In many production based series a manufacturer can do just this, GTE is the exception, and in reality it would only apply to a handful of manufacturer's like BMW with the Z4, most would use the same engine as the production car.

So in other words, It would appear the GTE would basically be 90% of the GT3, the other 10% would be GTE specific (whcih would be the inline 6 I presume).

That story is from July. There's no new information there. The car has been talked about before this season was halfway over when they announced it was the last year for the M3. New information would be whether the ACO and not just ALMS allow this car to partake in their events (WEC/LeMans).

Sorry about that, by big motor I meant the factory 6.2 liter engine instead of the 5.5 used on the C6.R...

If the ACO let them into Le Mans with that...

I mean seriously, whats the point of even having regulations? If they just go back to having V-1 Million, 12 liter engines, they're going to drive Ferrari, BMW, and Porsche out. They dont have any engines bigger than 5.5.

On a more positive note- Maybe Aston Martin can lobby to run the V12 Vantage. Its only 500cc's over, where as the Viper is more than 1500 over.

It was the ACO who gave the Viper it's blessing to run it's 8.0 liter V10! They should abolish the rule of displacement that way it won't be a 'waiver'.
