The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Apologies for triple post, but surely enough time has passed? Besides this morning see's the new look Audi R18 e-tron quattro being shown to the world :)

I have no idea how anyone is supposed to beat Audi when they keep making such incredible looking cars. I think it looks nothing short of amazing when you compare it to how LMP cars looked 10 years ago.

Looks beautiful.. Less front. More rear please :). Looks like they widened the areas around the brake duct intakes (fits more with the curvature of the design). Finally, a grill for the roof intake (Fuji...). Front lip looks the same. Can't wait to see the improvements to their blown diffuser design.

More menacing than it's predecessor! Comparison with the previous R18:

A poignant message from Tom Kristensen on Facebook:

A great FIA WEC racing season has ended. Thanks to all of you for your incredible support. Also congrats to Young Driver AMR #95 on their win today ‪#‎allanisproudofyou‬.
On this more I just got some designs I did back from a local embroidery place to add to my team wear for next year.

1 or 2 things I did to tidy up on them.

Audi R18 2014 Spy shots - Testing at Sebring

How is it that I never hear or read of these tests!!? Sebring is only an hr drive for me and if I ever know of a test with a day or to before it takes place I'll definitely go down there!!

It used to be that a lot of the teams that were going to lemans would test before/after the week of the 12 hours of Sebring. The past few years it's only been the really really big teams (primarily those with new cars that aren't based in France) that would test extensively at Sebring as a final race prep for spa (ILMC/WEC) and then lemans. They would usually go in this order:
Feb. test Sebring, race Sebring, test Sebring... March/April test le castolett, May race le castolett/spa, final shakedown with 24-48 hour race simulations at le castolett... June LeMans.
A work of warning though, the pre Sebring tests are usually closed, and I'd really expect them to be this year because of the competition that Porsche will bring to the WEC/LeMans. They play for keeps, and don't much about when they have something new up their sleeves. That said, they are known for doing light-years of testing when they have a new car, and the fact that they are joining the premier class in the WEC/lemans will mean the testing regimen will be even more extreme.
Yes, a lot of it will be done in Europe (and allegedly in Portugal recently, but the common wisdom is, if your car can stay together at Sebring, it might just stay together at lemans. So in the beginning of next year, it may be worth a drive to Sebring. Look around the carparks at local hotels for a bunch of vw group cars with dealer or paper plates. Rent a room there for the night, and hit the continental breakfast as soon as it opens. Then just look for Audi/Porsche jackets, and ask them if you can tag along.
If they say yes (or no), promise you won't bring your telephoto lens or a stopwatch and emphasize that you are just a "casual fan" (that just happened to drive to Sebring and rent a hotel room on the off chance you may get to check out a day of testing.) If you are a circuit worker, or have any sort of racing license, offer to be a corner worker (you will have a better view this way, and they have to have corner workers to test.)

Because they don't want people to turn up with stop watches? ;)
