The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I guess so, sounds like the user is a troll trying to get a rise. Someone better inform him that mister bean did it better.

No, because It's really a 2.0 L engine and It has four cylinders. I just find that funny because I've never seen a combo like that, in my opinion.

And you should just think before you assume someone is a troll.

2.0L 4 cylinder engines are in Lancers, Golfs, Meganes, Imprezas, Astras, and many other cars.

It obviously is a good engine type because it has large power potential and is still a small 4 cylinder.

Porsche, who are most likely a pretty smart company, realize the potential of a small engine capable of good economy and power in a race which requires both, as well as the reliability of only 4 cylinders.

Peugeot brought a big V12 diesel, and how many of their 4 cars finished in 2010? If porsche want to have a chance against the diesels, they're going to need good economy as well as good power. If their research shows that a 4 cylinder 2.0L is the best for that, they're going to use it.

I still am failing to see what's funny. Maybe if you don't want people to judge you as a troll, you should post content that's above a troll's. Posting "LOLOL 2.0L 4CYL LOLOLOL," Isn't going to get that done.

They didn't all explode, the 908 had V12 from 2007 through to 2010. The did win in in 2009 as well.

Not too mention that the 2006-2008 winning R10 was a V12 diesel as well.

They didn't blow up because they were bad engines, they blew up because they ran them with too much boosts

They still blew up at the end of the day. That's just because Audi was really pushing them hard.

Those V12s are still nonetheless very potent engines. It makes me wonder how much power were they really pushing?

Can't wait to see what the new Toyota TS040 is gonna look like. Im also glad there's 3 major car company instead of just 2 trying to win Le Mans.

I'm not sure if these pictures are viewable outside FBook, but the official ACO/Le Mans FB page published a few and I just had to share. Amazing. Truly amazing! More than 80 years ago ... the start of the 1933 Edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans!

And here Tazio Nuvolari approaching the Tertre Rouge esses at the wheel of the winning #11 Alfa Romeo. This car was driven for 24 hours at the amazing (for that era) average speed of 131 kmh

Here the event summary

The previous year’s winner, Raymond Sommer, took the lead shortly after Colonel Lindsay Lloyd, Vice-Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club in London, gave the start. The French driver, supported by Tazio Nuvolari, even managed the fastest time in the race during the 24th lap. The monstrous Duesenberg, driven by Prince Nicolas of Romania, did not even get that far: marshalls excluded him as of the 2nd lap for failing to comply with the mandatory time interval between refueling.

Raymond Sommer, victorious in 1932 after 20 hours behind the wheel, quickly dusted his pursuers, but mid-race bombshell: the fuel tank of the No. 11Alfa Romeo was leaking. When it rejoined the track, precious minutes were lost, forcing the Franco-Italian duo to attack relentlessly in order to catch up to the leaders, which eventually resulted in brake problems.

During the attempted repair, the duo of Louis Chiron - Franco Cortese in the No. 15 Alfa Romeo took the lead, but not for very long as Raymond Sommer and Tazio Nuvolari clocked fast laps and made up time. However, the fuel tank issue had not been resolved and the team feared being unable to meet the required number of laps between pit stops, a circumstance that had already been fatal to the Duesenberg. Fortunately, a remarkable accident proved not fatal for Odette Siko who was driving the No. 20 Alfa Romeo 6C, yet the car was totaled.

A bright idea by Raymond Sommer eventually saved the race: to use chewing gum to plug the hole! As the repair could only be executed with available tools, Sommer and Nuvolari left each pit stop with pockets full of gum and had to "tinker" while fervently chewing because the duo of Luigi Chinetti - Philippe Varent was back on their heels.

On the last lap, both Alfa Romeo 8C cars, driven by two Italians, were neck and neck and passed each other repeatedly, but it was Tazio Nuvolari who crossed the finish line as the winner…with a lead of 401 meters! It would take 60 years for that record to be broken...

What's even more amazing I find that the speeds of the cars jumped very quickly over the years.

It was in the 60s that the top prototypes started to touch and just exceed 200 mph. Then the 70s came and 917s were regularly doing 230+, and then the Group C's added to the fun by being seen regularly in the 240 mph club until the chicanes were brought in the 90s to keep things a bit safer.

If the chicanes weren't brought in, and the ACO was not that bent on efficiency and safety, just how fast would today's prototype go on that straight? It's amazing enough that today's LMP1's barely go over 205 but yet are producing more laps over a period of 24 hours and still maintain roughly the same lap times, if not faster, than what the 70s and 80s prototypes did with no chicanes and other changes made to the circuit in order to increase lap times.

I did think, and the fact that I've been on here longer than you and see how people act across the board on these threads, it's quite easy to tell who is a troll or just speaking without knowing anything about the technical side. Usually when a person is using text speak (against the AUP) and making a comment they aren't making any serious contribution.

Also it's more than just a 2.0L power plant, considering it's hooked to KERS and ERS nearly F1 esque.

I didn't say "LOLOLOL 4 cylinder" I did say "lol" and "lmao" but I first asked why the 4 cylinder (Because I've never seen one in modern LMPs). You finally explained that in your second and third paragraphs, but whatever.

It's also funny that just because I say "Lol, why the 4 cylinder?" you automatically get your jimmies rustled and assume I'm a troll instead of just answering the question in the first place. And I never knew laughing at
something was "trolling."

Finally, that bright ass blue text is about to give me a seizure; cut that out.

 and "haha" are fine. Lol and lmao are text speak and banned by the AUP.

And sorry, this is the color I use.

I would say it's okay since you're new but that means that the AUP should still be fresh in your mind. You agreed to it before you joined the site. Don't lash out at others for your laziness in following rules you agreed to before joining the site.

Show me someone who's ever been warned for saying "lol"

Get off your high horse and let the mods do their own job.

The AUP applies even if the mods do not mind. New users should have the AUP reinforced early on to help avoid mod conflict in the future, wouldn't you agree?

And while I will agree that just "lol" will rarely get a user, warned, overall textspeak in posts will. You're welcome to look in the banned user log if you don't believe me.

Okay, let's look at it:

You will not use “textspeak” (“r”, “u”, “plz”, etc.) in your messages. Decent grammar is expected at all times, including proper usage of capital letters.

All I see are short hand forms of single worlds; are, you and please. Completely different from abbreviations that are used all the time. "lol" "lmao" "brb" "ok" "ttyl" "GT6" "NFL" "WEC" "IMSA," etc. Those are all abbreviations that are widely used. You could also argue that "lol" has turned into an onomatopoeia. What's the difference between "lol" and a smilie, anyway?

You've barely been here a year. Hell, I've only been here 3 years. Who are we to judge who a "new user" is?

You can only force yourself to look at the AUP. You're not a mod. Stop trying to act like one.

And while I will agree that just "lol" will rarely get a user, warned,

Would that possibly be because it's not an AUP violation?

You can stop trying to talk down to me now. I don't need your permission.

I'm not about to drag this further off-topic now. I've said all I need to.

When was the AUP part of Le Mans? How'd you guys get so off topic. :odd:
Ask him, not me.

I was never trying to talk down to you. I also don't think I'm 'acting like a mod' for reminding people of the AUP. It's not like I'm going around saying that I'm gonna ban them, am I?

To not be off topic completely, do Ferrari plan to launch an LMP1 for this year? And I've also heard rumors of Nissan and BMW. Are these true?

You haven't looked at the LMP2 field for a while then or in fact ever then have you?

Yup. I really just focus on the LMP1 and GT classes. LMP2 doesn't really appeal to me. I've watched the ALMS; where they used to pretty much use LMP2s and that one make LMP class I forgot and GT cars but I only watched for a few races.

Of course I see them during Le Mans but don't pay much attention.

If you guys had just told me the reason for the V4 and if had been used before instead of calling me a troll because of "lol" (-_-) then we'd move right on.

..V4? That doesn't sound like a good idea.. Sounds like a rough ride..

If Porsche are really using a V4 then more power to them.. But I think it's most likely either an F4 or I4 👍 V4's are extremely uncommon in cars.

Well, either Porsche will look like the biggest fools on the grid or the biggest genius in the race. Either way, they have just made their return that much more interesting.

Indeed. Any new technical approach makes it all much more appealing. That was also a big part of the 787B appeal in its day. No cylinders? Wut?

Yep. That race is the embodiment of "Stranger things have happened"

So this was literally a misunderstanding as you guys didn't realize It was a V4 instead of a regular?

wow....

For me, yes. I thought it was an I4! Or at least a F4 being Porsche!

Now I agree with you though, this V4 is almost a funny idea! There are so few V4's in cars that Porsche seem to be in really uncharted waters here..

If it works though..

Actually, some of us knew it was a V4, and others didn't. I still don't see what the issue is especially considering that was the first choice of F1 before the finally went with a V6. There is research and testing of these engines the amount of money Porsche is prepared to throw at this, I wouldn't find anything they do too questionable for WEC.
