The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Mark Webber :"I was sitting next to Fernando the entire FIA awards ceremony and we talked about the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. He loves that car, he found it aesthetically very beautiful. Generally he really likes the shape and body of sports prototypes. In a week, he will give the start of the 24 Hours and is very much looking forward to being there for that big moment. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the greatest races in the world and it's fantastic to see Fernando here. Now, who knows what Ferrari will decide to do in the future?"

Rumour has it that its alfa

Well that'd be weird, especially considering what happened last time Ferrari attempted to race an Alfa in the prototype ranks. Anyone remember this car? Yes? No? Maybe? Well that's because it never turned a single lap in a race. The project was abandoned. Personally, I'd prefer to see a Maserati prototype.

Sportscar365 did an article on this as well so it seems pretty legit to me.

Certainly sounds possible. The Alfa brand would be a good way to go for Ferrari; it's where they've concentrated their lightweight/hybrid research in road cars (see the new, erm, 4C? 8C? Can't remember without checking the other thread :D ).

That's how i see it as well that they would team it up with that from a marketing point of view.

Excuse my ignorance, but does this mean more LMP2 crashes bound to happen in the future (2014 12 Hours of Sebring)? It is inevitable.

The opposite, with no need for an amateur in the line up cars could have all star line-ups, acting as a cheaper alternative to single seaters for decent drivers.

Risky move. The likes of OAK, Alpine, SMP, etc. will benefit. Since he has run against all-pro lineups before in P1, I'm sure Leventis' Strakka won't be too concerned. But other teams who are owned by or rely on a gentleman driver to bring in funding might struggle. They won't want to race where they cannot win, so even if they are offered safe haven in ELMS, Le Mans will be "unwinnable" and if you take that off the schedule, the entire funding package could fall apart. WEC may not be affected my such a move, but ELMS and the budding ALMS are more likely to be affected negatively.

The only upside is that now the TUSCC guys can show up for Le Mans in Prototype. With the budget for the WEC being considerably high compared to an ELMS/TUSCC/AsianLMS budget, I don't see many teams that will be able to run the whole season pro-pro. They're already slim on car numbers. Teams like Oak will be fine because they have funds. The gentleman teams, realizing they can be the premier class in ELMS or TUSCC with less of a budget for the season may end up becoming the route of those teams. It's really dangerous because if most of the privateer teams go away, the WEC becomes factory LMP1-HY and the factory GTE-pro with a few am teams

Correct me if I'm wrong but I see the Prodrive logo behind the rear wheel, my interest has been captured...
