You missed the joke.

I like Metallica up to the "Black Album", granted I don't think it's as great as people make it to be but still has its moments. Load/ReLoad-St. Anger was forgettable and there really is only one or two songs from that era I like(King Nothing and Fuel are guilty pleasures of mine). As for Death Magnetic, it felt like they were trying to hard to get back to their 80's sound and it just didn't work, although I do like the cover art.

On a different note, both Adrenaline Mob and Anthrax are coming out with cover EP's next month.:D
I think Death magnetic did give them back theirs 80s sou nd to an extent but it wasn't quite there. That said theire "new' Black album will be interesting as they've said they want to do a similar album with shorter, more to the point songs.
No, Lulu IS the joke.

That was what I was getting at.

I always like the Black Album, just because the songs were catchy. That said, it doesn't make it any better or worse to the rest of the albums they've put out, prior to. I never cared for Load, Re-Load or Garage Inc, but those did have their moments as well and songs I liked.

Death Magnetic....it's either love it or hate it I think. I like it but I agree there could have been so much more. Some of the songs are great, others are a bit weak. Highlights for me were Suicide and Redemption, The Day That Never Comes, Cyanide, Unforgiven III (was ok), Broken Beat and Scarred and All Nightmare Long. The rest were just "meh". Not like the early albums were every song on them were incredible.

About Slayer and Megadeth, yeah that might be true but either way from my point of view none of it was "terrible" by any standards, just different playstyle from what fans like us were used to.

To me catchy has always been a cheap sell. Everything on the radio is catchy for that reason, because most people just don't care they just want something to sing along to. You typically get into a catchy song faster but when you get into something that is a bit more dense the reward is a thousand times better.

'Short and to the point' completely destroys the one thing I live for in music. No drama, no sense of mental disorganization... everything is orderly, predictable and gets old really fast. This is why popular music fades into obscurity so quickly, you listen to it a bunch at first because its triggered into your head on the first play you can't help but listen. But then after a few weeks its played out and you are sick of it and so you move on to the next one. 10 years later you hear it replayed on some classic rock channel and you say, OH EM GEE GURL DIS IS MAH SAWNG! And babble on how modern music sucks and I wish things were like they were 10-20 years ago. Despite the fact that same catchy song uses all the same damn recycled chord progressions as 500 other songs from every other decade dating back to the dawn of radio. Meanwhile I never stopped listening to that one song from 8 years ago that makes me feel like I had a thousand orgasms every time.

Sure one goes through phases we all do, but you still always go back. Everyone is entitled to enjoy what they like and that's the great thing about music. But there is always a nerve that gets tickled when I hear people go on about how Metallica is the greatest metal band when they've clearly crossed the hard rock line a long time ago. Not a bad thing but I have a hard time calling a rock band 'Metal'... The line between them is clearly defined.

But you sure as hell can be metal and write a catchy song... Pentagram were masters at this (I say was because they did all their writing in the 70's and haven't done any since despite still being around).

Shame it took 15 years for them to finally produce a studio album otherwise they might have got more recognition for being the very first metal band formed on US soil.

Don't know whether this can be considered metal, it's rather instrumental but I like this one a lot. Played by the guitarist himself:

What are your favorite guitar duo's and trios? These are some of my personal favorites.

Adrian Smith/Dave Murray/Janick Gers - Iron Maiden
Kirk Hammett/James Hetfield - Metallica
Glen Tipton/K.K. Downing - Judas Priest
Eric Clapton/Duane Allman -Derek and the Dominos
Angus and Malcom Young - AC/DC
Joe Perry/Brad Whitford - Aerosmith
Jeff Watson/Brad Gillis - Night Ranger
Dave Mustaine/Marty Friedman/Chris Poland - Megadeth

List not anywhere near complete but it's a start.

Woody Weatherman/Pepper Keenan - Corrosion of Conformity
Kirk Windstein/Pepper Keenan - Down
Bryan Giles/David Sullivan - Red Fang
Jimmy Bower/Brian Patton - Eyehategod
Joe Duplantier/Christian Andreu - Gojira

Kind of shocked at how many bands I listen to having only one guitar.

^Is that the album artwork? The music is good but that artwork is pretty bad.

How about some 90's sludge. Outside of EHG no one was this filthy!

That's real metal.

Nu-metal, Screamo etc. is False metal.

Hmm, I don't think you could say anything isn't real metal, but I think bands like black veil brides, bullet for my vallentine, avenged sevenfold... are just... :yuck: But I like Korn and they're nu-metal.

Yea, well I don't really listen to anything newer than the late '80s/early '90s, regardless of genre. It's a general distaste for modern music that I have.

Well, some good news, I finally found this album at HMV. They don't often have any '70s Priest. So of course I had to buy it.

My personal favorite off the album!

Excellent list, mine would look no different. Also,

Kai Hansen and Michael Weikath - Helloween.

Love, love, love this song and album. 👍

Either this or Hallowed Be Thy Name is my absolute most favorite song ever...this song is severly underrated. I recommend anyone that likes metal to give this a listen. Blistering vocals, excellent guitar harmonies, several different ones nonetheless and great bass and drum work.

I don't think its physically possible for Iron Maiden to be underrated.

That song has only been played live one time, and there are many others that were never played live. When people think Maiden, at least around in my area, they think Run to the Hills, Number of the Beast and The Trooper with the occasional Aces High and 2 Minutes to Midnight, maybe Powerslave and Can I Play With Madness. I have a few friends I got into Fear of the Dark stuff but other than that, no one really knows the synth stuff with is my absolute favorite of everything they've done.

Not a soul has heard of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.

It's that song, Sea of Madness and a few others that are severely underrated in the Maiden catalogue.

Even people online said (when searching for underrated tunes) that it took them a while to find that song but when they did, they eargasmed. The first time I heard this song I almost died. I get emotionally attached to them and for some reason, I can't quite put my finger on it, but somehow the synth era songs touch my soul. I'm am attached. No matter how many times I hear those songs they never ever ever get old.

And even though it doesn't exactly pertain to this song in particular, Maiden is very good at making their music sound like it came from the actual time period the lyrics describe, while still sounding like classic Maiden. And I must say at least they know they cannot perform some of those old songs at the speed the used to and make it work, since according to Nicko, they have become more refined as far as tempos go.

Until every human on earth has heard Maiden, they are underrated. :dopey:

I personally don't like Iron Maiden that much. I think their music is often times boring but I can see the appeal.

I actually enjoyed reading this post and I love your enthusiasm. I can feel you about the lack of one song being played live. The whole everyone only knows this song happens to every band. They are the catchy songs that get air time... And people usually recognize the band by the songs they hear on the radio.

I'd rather everyone listen to them though, over than any of the junk that's been on the top 100 in the past 10 years or so.

This is exactly what happens. Not like they get much airtime anyways. But the fact that they were always about the music and the fans is what kept people coming back. Some songs like the one I posted, you can really feel the heart when Bruce belts out those lyrics. To them it was about the music and the experience to the listener, not the airplay or the album sales. I commend Iron Maiden for this and I firmly believe that is the reason they are still around making music today. While I have other bands that I love and enjoy, this is the only band that has ever touched me this way, catered to me in different ways and gave me the best overall experience, through the albums, b-sides and live performances. Even less than average songs by Maiden's standards have never been that bad. Songs have made me emotional, made me think and hell, some even give me a history lesson every time I listen to them.

I'd rather everyone listen to them though, over than any of the junk that's been on the top 100 in the past 10 years or so.

I agree 100%, then again, The Final Frontier made number 1 in pretty much every country except the US, which it made #2. A Matter of Life and Death almost did that as well. I've noticed that since Fear of the Dark, their albums have been slowly creeping up the charts. The fan base is much larger now than it was in the '80s, and the band themselves say they get creeped out when they realize they've aged and the crowd hasn't.

Top 100 has always been bad... Chart music is always bad, always has been always will be and its physically impossible for that to EVER change. Look at the chart music from the 60's and 70's... Its all terrible. But when you look at the actual size of the fan base Iron Maiden is leaps and bounds higher then pretty much all of them.

I have such an endless amount of respect of Iron Maiden. I really do. I can count on two hands the amount of vocalist that can been mentioned in the same sentence as Bruce. But I've never understood the love affair with the band. In part, I'm not a fan of the galloping style guitar riffs.

Anyways... I've been addicted to the unplugged version of this song lately.

I respect your opinion and am totally ok with it. Some people it just doesn't appeal to, same with my feelings toward pop music. But in all honesty, yes they have a lot of songs with the infamous "Maiden Gallop", but I'd say easily 75% of their catalogue does not contain these riffs. Most of it being the new stuff, which IMO isn't too bad. But you can easily tell Bruce has aged.

Yeah I can see what your saying. I think I've spent so much time listening to Doom/Sludge that my love for fast metal has twisted a bit. I hardly ever listen to BLS any more yet they are still my #1 most listened to band on Last.fm. I shouldn't say I don't like fast metal but its that heavy metal sound that sort of lost its touch for me except for a few bands. I've become a big fan of Grand Magus, Gypsyhawk and a few others I can't think of right now. I'm more Sabbath then Maiden when it comes to roots.

I don't dislike Maiden, as of recent I've pretty much been only listening to my gigantic playlist which is basically my favorite songs from every band I like or somewhat like so I can always be like 'OH DIS MAH SAWNG' every time a new song comes on. And on this playlist I have six Maiden songs...

Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Aces High
The Trooper
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Run to the Hills
Number of the Beast

There were a couple others I wanted to add but I can't remember the names, so I'll have to go through and figure that out.

I've been listening to a lot of EyeHateGod lately. I love how filthy they sound

That riff is freakin' awesome.

Yay! That was actually the first EHG song I heard many years ago and was one of the songs that got me into the Sludge scene. I'm not sure how deep you are in it but if you ever need any suggestions or nudges I'm pretty well read in this area and been to a few shows.

Aha I see you fall into that category of I only know these songs haha. I totally understand where your coming from though. I'd listen to some stuff off A Matter of Life and Death, it has a lot of "slower" Maiden. Theres quite a few songs by them but then again as a fanboy I pretty much like everything the wrote and I'd never give you one good song, if asked I'd probably give you their discography lol
