Every In Flames song I've heard, I've loved the music, but as soon as the vocals start.... :yuck: Do they have any instrumentals? And what are some bands that have a similar musical sound, without the "harsh" vocals?

I don't think there are any similar bands with softer vocals. In Flames belong to the Gothenburg metal scene (they were actually one of the pioneers of the sound), so a lot of bands that sound like In Flames follow the same vocal formula.

No, metal was just the definition for rock that was too heavy to fit the standard molds. It just so happened that some of the bands that started off in metal had a dark side.

i wasnt aware canadians dont understand sarcasm.

It sure as hell didn't come off looking like sarcasm ;)

Strangely enough, I somehow came across a Christian death metal band a few days back... too bad I lost the name and didn't bother attempting to listen

I used to hate growly shouty vocals, now I think they are awesome. Which is all down to InFlames.

I hate rhapsody, bunch of foppish, frilly shirt wearing, sword wavers. IMO dire. Their songs sound like the sound track to a LARPERS wet dream.

I like the mad caps, saw em live a few years back, great if short show.

I bet Kev is a live action role playing, err guy.

From The Jester Race:
Track 2: The Jester's Dance
Track 9: Wayfaerer

Eventually, like most fans, the vocals will ease in, just like I told Shannon. :P :D

Likewise.

I'm still not much of a death metal fan though. Strangely, I absolutely love Opeth's vocals.

Ugh, I'm not so sure. I can barely stand it right now. :indiff: But I guess we'll see. Thanks for the songs.

Eh, trust me. You have the exact same attitude that a lot of people first have. I remember when Shannon first discovered bands like In Flames, he loved the music, but hated the vocals, and used to get seriously frustrated with them.

In my own personal experience, I didn't exactly dislike the vocals, but I didn't prefer them at first. Eventually, you learn to reverse what you would normally do with bands. Normally, vocals play the dominant factor to your earwaves. You hear the vocals and vocalist before you hear the music in most cases. With a select number of bands, including In Flames, you will eventually listen to the music over the vocals, and the vocals will become backup music.

Once you get to that stage where you don't mind the vocals, you'll start to ease into them with bands like Dark Tranquillity and Amon Amarth, predominantly the latter.

Well, I've just listened to the Jester's Dance. Great song, even if it is a bit short.

I am that way for most, if not all bands that I listen to. The music is way more important than the vocals or lyrics, but I've always had a hard time getting past vocals like In Flames. I'm trying though. :dopey:

I was the same when I started shifting to "heavier" music. However, the only death metal I listen to is Lamb of God. That's probably because of Cannibal Corpse.

I almost downloaded some Cannibal Corpse a while ago...but looked up some lyrics first. Needless to say, I didn't download any.

Lyrically, they're brutal and gruesome. Some like that, some don't. But The Wretched Spawn is a very good album, and worth listening to regardless.

Well, you don't listen to any death metal then.

Lamb of God are a metalcore band.

Right now my speakers are playing As I Lay Dying.

other bands on this playlist are:

Avenged Sevenfold (Their new stuff isn't that great)
Between the Buried and Me
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Dragonforce
Extol
Haste (They're good, but their label cut them... 0-_-0
In Flames (pre-Sountrack to your Escape = roxxor)
It Dies Today
Killswitch Engage
Lamb of God
Mastodon
Metallica
Nevermore
Nightwish
Opeth
Scars of Tomorrow
Shadows Fall
Slipknot (their last CD)
Trivium (the next Metallica
Twelve Tribes
Unearth

If these bands aren't metal, I don't know who are. Slipknot's nu-metal, but the other ones = \m/

swear to god kaffiene, ith a few exceptions that is practically my fricken playlist. Avenged Sevenfold I dont think get the exposure they deserve, no.1 fav band, and anyone that says that Trivium aint the next Metallica except heavier, and alot more talented is a fool. Amazing drumbeats, pure metal guitar riffs, topped off with killer solos, of course, becuase they actually sing some parts most will automatically call it emo or something, despite the amazing drumlines and guitar riffs, i think the vocals are the real standout in their new album Ascendency.

Avenged Sevenfold and Haste are both more closely linked to Hardcore than metal.

In Flames (pre-Sountrack to your Escape = roxxor)
Even pre-Reroute. In fact, the point where Anders started incorporating melodic vocals into the mix was the beginning of the downhill slide for In Flames, even the music went rotten. They might as well be Nu Metal now. Anders should have consulted Speed from Soilwork on how to incorporate softer vocals into a Melodeath band before doing anything. In Flames should be re-learning work from The Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony before going anywhere else. The new album should be interesting, it's due soon.
KaffeinE 86
Trivium (the next Metallica)
Maybe the new Metallica from St. Anger, but nothing close to pre-Load. To suggest that Trivium are even a match or better than Metallica is an insult to metal in general. Though we may like to bag out Metallica for selling out, pre-Load Metallica was a big step for metal, and great metal masterpieces. Trivium are seemingly another metalcore band to join the endlessly growing list of the present.

Just got back from hearing a couple of promo tracks The Berzerker have released for anyone interested. Very different from the self-titled and Dissimulate stuff. Clearer guitar sound, more melody, but definitely better it seems. Eagerly looking forward to this release.

The new album should be crap, it's due soon.

Fixed.

I was gonna do a huge post about why and how in flames suck, but I'm going to sum it up in a very short fashion.

In flames are crap now. Go listen to Death.

Anyone ever heard of Spiral Architect? I guess you'd call them Progressive Metal, but I'd call them "Organized Chaos". :odd: They seem like a very talented group. Although if you only like songs you can easily keep beat with, you probably won't like them. ;)

Currently I'm into these following bands

As I Lay Dying
Bury Your Dead
Children of Bodom

This is true, the most recent CD's are misurable. Though they have shifted toward teh nu side of metal, the mixing on the past 2 cd's has been wretched, the same producer did Soilwork's new one, and their drums also sound like garbage as well. But the band still has some kind of talent left in them, cuz they dont' see green :D

You sir, have great taste! 👍

You need to get some Dark Tranquillity and Enforsaken in there though. ;)

Got the new Between the Buried and Me the other day, it's preety good, the new Opeth is one of the best cd's they've ever put out, just so great. Just the start

(starts with soft guitar)
GHOST OF... MOTHER
lingering death.

Just.... holy damn.

If you like Children of Bodom you would love Imperanon, they are like Children of Bodom Jr.

All That Remains
Arch Enemy - Angela Nathalie Gossow is a pretty cool chick vocalist, even though I'm not usually a fan of female vocalists in metal.
As Hope Dies
As I Lay Dying
Bury Your Dead
Children of Bodom - I don't mind the occasional Bodom.
Chimaira
Cradle of Filth
Crossbreed
Despised Icon
Dimmu Borgir - Old Dimmu is the way to go, they began to sell out, although I hear the new album is decent.
Dream Theater - Endless talent.
Fear Factory - Everyone loves Fear Factory! :D
From Autumn to Ashes
Haste the Day
Imperanon
In Flames - Pre-Clayman is absolutely beautiful. The Jester Race through to Colony period puts In Flames to one of my favourite bands.
Kamelot
Killswitch Engage
Lamb of God
Maryter AD
Meshuggah - Although they get repetitive at times, a very off-centre, talented band.
Opeth (quite possiably the best band ever) - I don't know about best band ever, but god damn good.
Between the Buried and Me
The Black Dahlia Murder
Shadows Fall
Soilwork - One of my favourite bands. Even during their supposed "sell-out" period, I like them. Nowhere near the downfall of In Flames.
Strapping Young Lad
Suffocation - One of the best Death Metal bands you'll find.
The Agony Scene
The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Mars Volta - Not really metal in my books, but I love them. Very different, but very, very cool. I'm listening to them at the moment actually.
Unearth
Yes, you do have decent taste.

Like Shannon said, try Dark Tranquillity. Especially their new album.

Man, I miss the old days of activity in this thread...

Has anyone come across a band called Path of Possession? It's a band that has Corpsegrinder from Cannibal Corpse. Apparantly it's a cross between a bit of Brutal Death and a bit of Melodic Death (do not confuse with Gothenburg). I haven't been able to come across anything yet, and I can't rely on my sources to give me decent reviews.
