The Metal ThreadMusic

Hmm, I could've sworn there was a christian metal band by the same name. Oh, and "Metal" is a musical style, not a way of life. Although for some, that is true.

Yeah, but a christian rock band is soooo hippocritical... and this is after experiencing youth groups and a band claiming to be christian. I don't want to get into it further but it just seems wrong to me.

Anyone recommend some metal bands that aren't dark/gothic/death metal? 'Tis time to expand the horizons, but not that far. ;)

Edit - Opeth is out. I thought they were progressive metal, but it seems they're more death than anything. :indiff:

give Black Label Society a try. Try older Pantera as well. Their new stuff is amazing, but it's thrash metal. Their older stuff is borderline hair metal.

You might also like Nightwish if you're into symphonics in the music. If you like Nightwish, you'll love Symphony X. Actually, try Symphony X first.

KaffeinE 86
Dragonforce
Extol
Haste (They're good, but their label cut them... 0-_-0
In Flames (pre-Sountrack to your Escape = roxxor)
Metallica
Nevermore
Nightwish
Opeth

those bands are metal. the other ones are metalcore. and bad metalcore.

Zao is metalcore also.

and im not a christian....but...

you think christian metal is hypocrtical? because metal was created to worship satan? right.

No, metal was just the definition for rock that was too heavy to fit the standard molds. It just so happened that some of the bands that started off in metal had a dark side.

I've only got the Sham Mirrors, what other stuff do your reccomend?
As code_kev said, Aspera Hiems Symfonia is great, but I seriously recommend you La Masquerade Infernale. It's fantastic.

As for Diabolical Masquerade, Nightwork is probably my favourite, although the older stuff is also very good, if much more... black.

Yeah, I've heard some Symphony X and Nightwish, they're not bad. I recently checked out Stratovarious though, they are amazing. 👍 Not too sure if they've been mentioned already.

I don´t like Stratovarius that much, but I have some friends that do. If you like Power/Melodic Metal you should also try some Angra and Shamaan. And of course if you still don´t know Dream Theater, give it a try.

I'll name some bands I like. I'll ignore the "aren't dark/gothic/death metal" :D

Arcturus, Bathory, Pantera, Testament, Ulver, Death, Dissection, Entombed, Anthrax, Immolation, Immortal, Napalm Death, Paradise Lost (I think you'd love this band), Rob Zombie, Sepultura, Slayer, Bruce Dickinson, and Children of Bodom . There's a few bands I like. You may not like any of em, but allways worth having a look eh eh eh!

Have to add, I bloody hate Nightwish. IMO utter utter crap. I won't go in to why.

So you got a fave Arcturus track then? Mine has to be wintry gray, one of the best songs I've ever heard.

Be interesting to hear their new album, I just hope the new singer is as good as Garm.

Dream Theater is my favorite band. :D I'll take a look at the other 2 you mentioned as well.

Thanks, I'll give some of those a look as well. And please do go into why you hate Nightwish. The music forum needs to be stirred up a little. ;) I think their music is OK, but sometimes the vocals turns me off competely.

That's like me with Cradle of Filth... The music isn't terrible (not really that good either), but the lyrics and vocals completely turn me off...

I've never heard them, but are there vocals the "death scream" type? :odd: I don't know if there's a technical term for that kind of singing, but I don't listen to bands like Sepultura for example, for that very reason.

You asked me to go in to why...so what ever I say is your fault hahah :D

Here's some lyrics from a Nightwish song...I think this sums up why I think they are a pile of crap quite well.

"The scent of a woman was not mine...

Welcome home darling
Did you miss me?
Wish to dwell in dear love?

Touch my milklike skin
Feel the ocean
Lick my deepest
Hear the starry choir

Rip off this lace
That keeps me imprisoned
But beware the enchantment
For my eroticism is your oblivion

Old love lies deep you said
Deeper shall be the wound between your legs"

Pretentious crap, at least bands like Ulver can be pretentious and brilliant at the same time. People act as if Nightwish are the most profound band ever, as if they are poets. These people go on about how tarja or what ever she is called is "classically trained", how the songs are great. All I see is a crap version of Children of Bodom, who cover Andrew Lloyd Webber, wear bin bags on stage, have silly sounding vocals, and sing about generic "goff" themes. I await the day when "metal bands with female opratic "goff" singers" die away. Rant over. For now. ;).

No, they are supposed to be a black metal band, and thus use black metal style screechy/ sceamy vocals. They are the joke of the black metal community, regarded as a traveling freak show of numptys, who sold out years ago. If fangs, capes, crap songs, top hats, terrible corpse paint and fat "goff" girls are your thing, then you'l love Cradle of Filth. I don't. Also Danni Filth is a tit.

On a side note, anyone here like cephalic carnage. I saw em a few weeks back, and they were fantastic, well worth seeing. To call them heavy as hell would be an understatement.

Yes. And that will definitely be The Chaos Path. "One of the best songs I've ever heard". ;)

That will be very difficult... And even if he sings better, Arcturus will never sound the same without him.

I've never cared about them quite enough to look up any lyrics, but I guess I see your point. For me, the music comes first way ahead of the lyrics. As long as the singer sounds good, I don't really care what he/she's singing about. But Nightwish leaves a lot to be desired in the musical department as well, so I've never really been too high on them.

 Capes? Fangs? Ha, sounds like a joke.

It´s called "Gutural" here, I don´t know if it´s the same word in English.

"gutural"?... Do you mean the type of sound being made by the human voice in certain metal vocal styles?... If so, I think Lamb of God, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, etc... Would be considered more "guttural" in sound...

www.brainydictionary.com
Guttural
Of or pertaining to the throat; formed in the throat; relating to, or characteristic of, a sound formed in the throat.
A sound formed in the throat; esp., a sound formed by the aid of the back of the tongue, much retracted, and the soft palate; also, a letter representing such a sound.

Black metal singers have more of a screach to their vocal style... I like some black metal, but like most genre's you have to weed through all the crap to find the diamonds...

;)

Rhapsody! Anyone here listen to them? I'm listening to "The Mighty Ride of The Firelord" right now. :odd: I'm really liking them so far, and they sure have some great names for their songs, if nothing else. ;)

This may have been discussed already,
but anyone here like "the MAD CAPSULE MARKETS!" They absolutely RULE

If they are that Japanese punk band then I think so. I have a track called "Pulse" that I think is by them.

It's ok, maybe I should listen to more.

I hate rhapsody, bunch of foppish, frilly shirt wearing, sword wavers. IMO dire. Their songs sound like the sound track to a LARPERS wet dream.

I like the mad caps, saw em live a few years back, great if short show.

Okay, I don´t understand half of the words code used but I´m pretty sure he doesn´t like Rhapsody.

Did you know that the new singer is Simen Hestnæs? Great news! I've only found that now!

He's an awesome singer. He was Borknagar's vocalist (before Vintersorg) and he also made a session appearance in "La Masquerade Infernale".

There couldn't have been a better substitute. 👍

Man I love Borknagar, a great band. That guy has a fantastic voice, though I still prefer Garms. But yes, they couldn't have got a better substitute.

I've heard some of the new Arcturus stuff, it's good, but what I heard was very low quality. I think I will buy the cd. :D

Anyway, it's sounding very nice indeed! No doubt I'll be buying the cd as well. 👍

That's more like it. :D
