Earlier Pantera was Power Metal ... they just looked like a Hair Metal band.

In fact, 'Power Metal' is the name of the album prior to 'Cowboys from Hell'... I have it somewhere, it's horrible. Phil Anselmo's first with Pantera, by the way. Lots of lyrical screaming, soft guitars and the drums are a background noise.

In fact, it was quite a makeover by Pantera going from this:

Add Amorphis to the list, Integra

I have the new Amorphis album, 'Eclipse'... It's pretty good, although I expected a different style, with that name and all. I expected Death Metal, so you're safe, Integra.

I've also been acquiring some very dark and underground death metal albums. Adorior, Aes Dana, Agalloch, Betzefer, Decapitated, Krisiun, Dissection, Necrophagist and many others. Damn, I these guys make Chris Barnes' voice a candidate for a children's choral.

Which Rhapsody and Theroin do you recommend?

Therion: 'Secret of the Runes' (2001) has to be the crest of Therion's music... it has a very nice story... there's 9 songs in the album, each song dedicated to a different 'world' of Norse mythology. Strong operatic overtures and an excellent blend of classical and metal. Their newest album is called 'Lemuria/Sirius B' (double album, 2004) is on one side less operatic and also more electronic. Nevertheless, it mixes perfectly mandolins, Hammond organs, opera singers, and a full symphony with the testosterone-fueled slam of heavy metal. Both are high recommentadions.

Rhapsody: Be sure to check out Luca Turilli as well, since he's the singer in Rhapsody and has a couple of solo albums. I'd recommend 'Symphony of Enchanted Lands' for no specific reason other than it's the first one in which the true 'Rhapsody' style starts. 'Dawn of Victory' is perhaps their best album, probably one of the best of the whole fantasy-oriented proggressive metal genre. Lastly, 'Power of the Dragon Flame' is also good, very fantasy-oriented lyrics again, but also very cinematic music. In general, Rhapsody sounds very gothic, but without a female's voice, as is usually the norm; Luca Turilli does all the voices.

If you're still interested, check out Luca Turilli's 'Ancient Forest of Elves' and maybe 'King of the Nordic Twilight'. They're more or less the same style as Rhapsody but more focused on guitars and of course, Turilli's voice.

How much HDD space do you have? Out of curiosity.

Funny you should ask... My wife got me a DVD burner for Christmas because I was running out of space. In total I have 246 Gbs of space... the original 6 Gb hard-drive, an additional 80Gb one and I got myself a 160Gb portable one over the summer. Out of which 220 are only for mp3s... of those, I currently have about 140Gbs in use, plus around 110Gbs on CDs and 50Gbs on DVDs. The portable drive is the one I take with me to the DJ-ing sessions.

In other news, if any of you are into Death/Doom metal, check out a Chilean band called Coprofago, the album is called 'Unorthodox Creative Criteria'. They sing in English, so don't worry about not understanding. The sound is very like grindcore with doom metal, with a lot of jazz sounds... really breakthrough material. The voice is like a grunty Phil Anselmo (like the shouts in 'Far Beyond Driven', by Pantera). While the jazz sounds a lot like Tribal Tech or Vital Tech Tones.

Damn! I would be happy with an 80Gb one already. I had to delete most of my MP3 from the 40Gb HDD which I and the rest of my family use. I have them all in CDs, but it's a pain in the ass transfering music to the HDD so I can fill my MP3 player up and then delete it again. :ouch:

I have a 200gb main drive (that has yet to see mp3's), a 120gb external (currently 60gb filled...probably 50gb is music and the rest is pictures) and an 80gb external (currently full...about 60gb is music and the rest are pictures). I'm gonna need a 500gb drive by July.

Anyone like Children of Bodom?

well, I'll admit I have a couple of porn movies on the 160Gb drive :guilty:... for educational purposes :D

I'm okay with my actual capacity... I'm constantly burning stuff on DVDs, plus, I usually get these suggestions from kids at the discos and I just go ahead and get the albums. That's how I've gotten many underground death metal stuff.

Children of Bodom... I've heard about two albums and I really don't like it. I like my death metal to have a grave grunt, not a shrill, unless it's accompanied by a grave grunt. Something like the voice of Dying Fetusis what I like.

Pantera is so good! I'v just checked them out...they are awesome!

welcome to power metal! Check out the 'Vulgar Display of Power' album. I think it's their best.

Holy ****! My 'collection' is only 36GB strong. And I have a few lossless albums in there too (think 400-500mb per album)!

Integra, you might like Katatonia. I just started listening to them, pretty weak compared to my usual tastes, but still pretty awesome. 👍

I need to buy some Deicide...

Deicide... brings back fond memories of being a Satanist teenager, he he. I'd recommend 'Legion', off the top of my head, and the one that came after it. I think Deicide kept together until early 2000s, but it was more of the same always. Still, Glen Benton has a great voice...

I'm not a satanist but I love the music. 👍

I have that CD also.. and "Projects In the Jungle" terrible stuff.. ew

Lyrically-based genres piss me off. Just because a band has the same lyrics as another band, they shouldn't be grouped in the same genre. You'd be in shock if you discovered a death metal band listed as "Gothic Metal" after expecting something like Evanescence, simply because they have the same lyrical themes.
I agree. For example, the Viking Metal label that Amon Amarth get, purely because they sing about Vikings, Norse Mythology and War. They're Melodic Death Metal!

I expecially like Krisiun, Decapitated and Dissection from that list. They're some bands that I haven't really given a listen in a while, so thanks for that, Diego.

Too much overuse of the keyboards for my taste, and I listen to Skyfire, so that says something!

If they held back on the keyboards a little, they'd be a better band.
Diego440

Have you seen any of their film clips? Not a major fan of the band, but Kill Your Mother, R*** Your Dog, despite the name, is quite an abnormally funny film clip. Subliminal messaging at it's finest!
Diego440
Check out the 'Vulgar Display of Power' album. I think it's their best.
I'd have to agree, but Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven aren't far behind. Heck, I even like Great Southern Trendkill, though I wouldn't recommend it as a first-listener to anyone. A bit experimental (mostly on Phil's part).

Oh man, that's what I forgot to recommend. I knew there was something!

Wow, one of the first Death Metal bands that got me going. There's another band I've neglected for quite some time. Legion and Serpents Of The Light are definitely the best. Not a big fan of much else. The self-titled album and Once Upon The Cross were not too bad, but anything from Insineratehymn on isn't worth mentioning. Everyone loves the latest, Scars Of The Crucifix, but I still don't get much from it.

I do agree, though, Glenn Benton still has one of the best growls in the business.
Diego440
Neither am I... but when I was 16 I dressed real weird.
Never got into the "dressing for the scene" thing. To me, metal is primarily about the music, and there's not really a look that goes with it. Besides, there's too many sub-genres that I listen to and looks for each of those sub-genres for me to be able to match.

Just yesterday I acquired (what a nice euphenism for 'downloaded') the complete discography of Cannibal Corpse. I have to say, Sepultura, Deicide, Death and this band are the ones that got me into the whole death metal scene, which ended up with me singing for a death metal band... Out of Corpse's I think the best albums are 'Butchered at Birth', 'Tomb of the Mutilated', and one of the best death metal albums all-around: 'The Bleeding'. After Chris Barnes left the band I thought they were done, but this other singer, I forgot his name, who was in Monstrosity, is pretty good.

As for more recommendable underground stuff, I've got Dark Mirror ov Tragedy, Deathspell Omega, Vader, Ten Masked Men, Necrophagist and Vital Remains. I've also "acquired" Death's complete discography.

You mean the guys that cover popular mainstream songs?

I heard their cover of Eiffel 65 - Blue. Great stuff.

I've been trying to get hold of more Ten Masked Men stuff for ages. I have about 5 tracks and I think they're brilliant. Can't find it anywhere though.

Shannon: yes, those Ten Masked Men... they're great... the cover they do on The Police's 'Message in a Bottle' has a great drum track.

They're really hard to get. I've had a hard time finding them, in fact. I only have four albums by them, not sure if they've done any more work. The names may help you get them: 'The Phanten Masked Menace' (not a typo), 'Ten Masked Men', 'Return of the Ten Masked Men' and the fourth is 'Best of the Ten Masked Men'. Not very original in album-naming I'm afraid.

I don't think they've done anything else, their website only mentions those four. :)

George Fisher. I honestly prefer him over Chris Barnes. I also prefer the Cannibal Corpse albums with George. Wretched Spawn would have to be my favourite Cannibal Corpse album. The only album I really enjoy from the Chris Barned era is Tomb Of The Mutilated.

Vader and Vital Remains are two of my favourites. Ten Masked Men are always good for a laugh, too. They convert everything to Death Metal very well.

By the way, just from a Moderator perspective, keep the subtleties on acquisition as just those - subtleties. ;)

Gotcha 👍 hence, the word "acquire" works perfectly.

Anyway, today I listened to Les Claypool's side project, although I think Primus is DOA, Les Claypool's Frog Brigade... can't really be classified as metal anymore. And I think the Chris Barnes/George Fisher business is a matter of exposure. When I first started listening to Corpse, Barnes was the vocalist. I don't know if you know this, but the band broke up for a short time after Barnes left... in fact, they issued a greatest hits album which didn't make it to most markets. Luckily they got George Fisher in and didn't change the music. It's also notable that in the 15+ years Corpse has existed, they0ve never changed styles. Don't get me wrong, I think Fisher is very good, I'm just a Barnes fan.

Speaking of which, before Barnes left, he already had a side project, which later became his full-time band. The name is Six Feet Under... highly recommended. Very like Corpse but with less grind.

Got the discography. I find the Graveyard Classics to be funny, but horribly bad at the same time. Notably Graveyard Classics 2, which comprised of a complete cover of AC/DC's Back In Black album, was quite a bad album ... everything was way too slow. But still, funny at the same time. I don't mind their other albums, but still, not a huge fan of either Six Feet Under or Cannibal Corpse to be honest. Find them to be very overrated.

I don't think I have a full SFU CD... just loose songs, but I like what I've heard. Corpse is one of my fav death metal bands, along with Death and Deicide, but in all I stick to pre-1995 work, mostly because it was the time when I listened to them the most. After that I "evolved" to other types of music.

It's been just recently that I've started to listen to other, newer death metal bands. And to tell you the truth, I like very little of it... or at least I don't like the commercial ones like Killswitch Engage and similar. I prefer those that continue the "old skool" death metal style, like Dying Fetus, for example. Hence, I'm venturing into the most underground bands.
