Anyone heard of Evergreen Terrace? They sound pretty bad ass... I gotta find more and I'll get back to ya all. :D

They do a lot of covers... Like their cover of Smashing Pumpkins, Zero...

Good band...

;)

*cough* I haven't been stoned since last august!!!!!

Anyways, I probably *am* GTP's resident stoner rock/metal expert despite my limited knowledge of the genre.

I'm not that far behind you. :dopey:

All I need is some more HDD space!

I'm sorry to report..

Dope was not all that dope after all. :grumpy:

Opeth was dissappointing, they don't seem to be metal at all or at least the kind I like.

Evergreen Terrance is looking like a winner even though they have a song with a matrix quote in it. 👍

Therion: 'Secret of the Runes' (2001) has to be the crest of Therion's music... it has a very nice story... there's 9 songs in the album, each song dedicated to a different 'world' of Norse mythology. Strong operatic overtures and an excellent blend of classical and metal. Their newest album is called 'Lemuria/Sirius B' (double album, 2004) is on one side less operatic and also more electronic. Nevertheless, it mixes perfectly mandolins, Hammond organs, opera singers, and a full symphony with the testosterone-fueled slam of heavy metal. Both are high recommentadions.

I think 'Vovin' is pretty good, especially the first three tracks.

'Vovin' is pretty good, but I was saying those two are better in a general sense of the album :) Although 'Vovin' was the first album by Therion with some new members, so I think they were still lacking the sense of direction they have in the following albums.

THE ED3
Eternal Tears Of Sorrow

That's a pretty underground band. Although going from black/dark//death metal for the ever-populated gothic metal genre, I think there are better bands. I'm not saying it's bad, I liked it when it was death, though. Some of the members went on to create the band For My Pain, which is commercial hard rock/goth, if you are into that.

Anyone listen to Bury Your Dead? I love this band. Exactly the kind of metal I like.. Kinda reminds me of Hatebreed.

Too commercial for my taste. I'm not very into this hardcore/metalcore music. But if you like them you might enjoy It Dies Todayand Dead to Fall.

we were just talking about pantera a few pages ago.

I like a rather wide ranger of music... From Crematory to The sins of thy beloved and everything in between...

Are there any similar bands?

Are there any similar bands?

exactly like Therion?... hmmm... Not off the top of my head. Therion's style is quite different whithin the gothic metal genre, since they use a whole chorus. According to this one page I look at a lot, similar bands to Therion are On Thorns I Lay(Greek band), Lake of Tears, Alastis, and Rotting Christ. I can't really recall any of their songs, but you might want to give them a try since they mix the gothic with the doom and death metal.

But Therion has been around since about 1990, so there's a lot of music to get a hold of.

According to last.fm, the top 10 most similar artists to Therion are:

Tristania
Nightwish
After Forever
Blind Guardian
Moonspell
Rhapsody
Haggard
Finntroll
Dimmu Borgir
Kamelot

Yeah, because they're Gothic metal... but my guess is ROAD_DOGG33Jis looking for something with choir.

- Tristania has three vocalists (which in itself is pretty impressive): a soprano, a counter-tenor and a grunter.
- Nightwish has I think only one, female.
- After Forever has a female and a male grunter.
- Blind Guardian is all men, and they tend to sing in choruses, but not the same style as Therion... more like Rhapsody and Luca Turilli... more folk-ish singing as opposed to operatic.
- Haggard never heard it, so you may check it out.
- Finntroll is a bizarre fusion between death metal and folk metal, but more like Blind Guardian.
- Dimmu Borgir (are you serious?) hmmm... okay, it's death metal with operatic stuff, but it also has many industrial elements.
- Kamelot is like Blind Guardian but with more grunting, I think.

Still, ROAD_DOGG33J, if what you're looking for is gothic metal, regardless of choir or not, I think 911_Carrera has a few good bands here.

Rhapsody and Blind Guardian are not gothic metal in my book.

True, they aren't mainstream gothic, and to me Blind Guardian is more of Folk Metal, as could be Kamelot, Demons & Wizardsand Iced Earth. But they do get thrown into the same basket as gothic metal. Neither of them have the soprano female voice... would Folk Metal englobe them? Or would yo go a step ahead and call them Epic Metal? Although I'm sure Jimmy will have a fit about it :P

THE ED3
Anyone heard One man army and the undead quartet? Their album 21st centrury killing machine is pretty good IMO.

hmmm... Seems "21st Century Killing Machine" is a common name for albums. I have the same album name by a band called Wintermoon or something like that. But anyhow, I haven't heard them (the one you mentioned). What style are they?

I'm not sure actually. LOTR Metal maybe?

Anyone cares for Decapitated?

They have a new album (Organic Hallucinosis) and, although it's diferent to what they've done so far, the new vocalist is not bad and gave a new life to their sound.

If you don't know them and like Death Metal, check out Winds of Creation, their first album. Really good in my books. 👍

I actually have 'The Negation' and 'Winds of Creation', both of which I like very much. I like the voice and the technical drums, a-la Fear Factory but much noisier and strong-bassed. 👍

Well, I have just found them on death.fm. I'm not sure if they have other albums as that is the only one they have on the site and it says its from 2006. Its some decent stuff. It has some good bass. The song hell is for heros is pretty good.

Much the same as Diego, Hardcore and Metalcore aren't my kind of music. And I will still continue to argue that Hatebreed is Metalcore, and not Hardcore.

Anyone listen to Pantera? They are so good
I think we all know the answer to that one. Pantera have been probably my all-time favourite band for years now. Darrell Paul is also my favourite guitarist, and quite underrated commercially.

Try Nightwish, Antique or Aesma Daeva. However, I believe all of those bands have female vocalists, though Tarja was recently fired from Nightwish, which was pretty large news in the metal world.

According to last.fm, the top 10 most similar artists to Therion are:

[...]
Tristania: Female vocals, and a little bit more Gothic Metal. Still worth a look, I guess.
Nightwish: Fairly similar, but again, female vocals.
After Forever: Mixed female operatic vocals with death metal growling, and I suppose worth a look for something slightly similar, but a little different.
Blind Guardian: Quite different, in my point of view. Semi-Speed Metal, but mostly Power-Prog.
Moonspell: Quite an old band that has been around as long as Therion, but still fairly different. Their later stuff is probably closer to Therion, but still not overly close.
Rhapsody: Quite similar, and worth a look really. One of the pioneers of the Italian Power Metal scene, which isn't too far off what you may be looking for, really.
Haggard: Definitely similar to Therion in my books. Probably the best pick here.
Finntroll: Ugh. Similar? No. It's Folk/Black Metal, and nothing remotely what you're after.
Dimmu Borgir: This is worse than the Finntroll recommendation. They're commercialised Black Metal, and have become quite similar to Cradle Of Filth, though with less annoying vocals. This isn't what you're looking for.
Kamelot: Somewhere along the lines of Blind Guardian, but like Diego said, a little more growling involved. Not really what you're looking for.

Blind Guardian aren't Folk Metal. They're Power-Prog with reference to Speed Metal, as well (Speed Metal is generally mostly connected to Power Metal, anyhow). I would not call Blind Guardian, Rhapsody or even Iced Earth Gothic Metal. Nor would I call a lot of those bands that Jack listed from last.fm Gothic Metal.

And I won't have much of a fit ... though Epic Metal is basically Power Metal. Folk Metal doesn't encapsulate them, either.

Mr. Masquerade
Anyone cares for Decapitated?
Yes I do. Very much so. One of the better Death Metal bands around. Nihility is up there as one of my favourite Death Metal albums of all time.
Mr. Masquerade

Yeah, I've been wondering about the new album. I'm still a little wary of the new vocalist and the new direction they're apparantly headed in.

Good to see you around, Diabolical. Haven't seen you around in quite some time, although I've been very guilty of that myself in the last year or so.

And there ends another long post in this thread from myself. Apologies to all.

Hmm, I'll give a look at Tristania. I didn't like Lacuna Coil much, but After Forever's Remagine has been played quite a lot in my iPod lately so I might like some more bands from this genre.

THE ED3
I dont see how people say cradle of filth has annoying vocals and then turn around and say something about iced earth.
I never made any comment about liking or disliking Iced Earth.

Either way, different strokes for different folks.

I understand why people dont like Dani's vocals. I just happen to like them in most cases. I cant stand iced earths vocals. I think really preppy jr high cheerleaders have lower pitched voices.
