The Metal ThreadMusic

I got started with Guitar Hero. I discovered a lot of bands: Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Megadeth, Boston, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Judas Priest, Motörhead...then Guitar Hero II/Guitar Hero Rocks the 80's came out. And then Rock Band.

Laterly I've been sucked into glam. Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi...If I ever need to go to a costume party, I'll go in a glam metal costume.

Ah, yeah, how I got into metal. Prepare for wall-o-text...

Well, I started out listening to radio rock and pop punk bands, but I wanted something harder. I came to GTP for suggestions and through a few members here I am now a metal head. :D The first metal band I really got into was Nightwish (I think emad got me into them). I thought their song Ghost Love Score was the most epic thing. From Nightwish, I moved into other (generic-ish) symphonic power metal bands, then into something a little harder like Children of Bodom. After that, I really got into the Gothenburg sound, aka melodic death metal. Bands like Soilwork, In Flames, Katatonia (ok, they are gloom metal, but close enough) etc... I still really like that stuff, with Soilwork being one of my favorite bands. A lot of the heavier stuff I used to not like because I couldn't stand growling vocals, in fact it used to kind of creep me out. That's all changed now though. Diego/Tom Servo recommended me a band called Scar Symmetry and now they are my absolute favorite band. He's recommended other bands like Opeth, and they are great too.

TL;DR Listened to radio rock, wanted something harder, came to GTP for suggestions, now I <3 metal.

How did you guys first branch off into listening to metal?

Well, as a young kid, I really listened to anything, I didn't really have any likes or dislikes. However, as I grew older, I began to grow bored with regular rock music, and luckily, my mother never cared for the age restrictions on games. She bought me GTA Vice City. I listened to VRock.

Might be a crap start compared to others, but I don't care :sly:

Though in all fairness, it was ROAD_DOGG33J who first suggested/mentioned Scar Symmetry in this thread, I believe.

I find it really cool that I'm the second highest poster in this thread.

Indeed it was. I know this because it was pretty much the only band I found on my own. I consider it my contribution to gtplanet. :D Almost all the other great bands I found through GTP were thanks to you.

For me, I was all about Green Day, Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit until I grew some balls between 8th and 9th grade... That's when a buddy of mine over the internet told me to give Tool and Dream Theater a listen to... The first songs I listened to them was Sober (Tool) and As I Am by Dream Theater... And to this day they both remain one of my favorite songs. Every year I would pick up a few more bands until my Junior year which was a freaking roller coaster in life (ironically the year I really matured out of the old GTPer I used to be) and I got into some much heavier stuff VIA friend at school. Children of Bodom, Hatebreed, Soulfly, Soilwork, Wintersun, Dark Tranquility, Shadows Fall and Devildriver are a few bands that just took me off... Now I could write a freaking novel of all the bands I listen to...

Here are some bands that I have been listening to recently...

Lollipop Lust Kill (More industrial but loads of fun to listen to)
Ghost Brigade
Riverside
Superjoint Ritual
Threat Signal
Throwdown
Sparzanza
Sleep
Machinemade God
My Dying Bride
Evergrey
Eyefear
Deadlock
Calavera Conspiracy
Bloodsimple
Blind Colony

Specially have fallen in love with Sparzanza and Everygrey but they are all great bands! 👍

I checked out Sparzanza, they are awesome.

Also, glad to see someone else that likes Evergrey, I found them last year.

Awww! Lets not let the best music thread die!!!!

Good to see you enjoyed Sparzanza!

I'm going to go ahead and list a few new bands that I have discovered recently...

TesseracT - I would label as Prog Metal if anything. I've only listened to there 2007 EP, but I like what I hear and looking forward to more.

Sybreed - If you want to hear some good Cyber Metal I would suggest to check these guys out. To me they kind of sound like a mix of Soilwork and Children of Bodom... Which works out pretty damn well.

Zuul FX - Death Metal... Nothing really to explain, just a good damn listen. Very fun to head bang too.

Dagoba - Industrial Death Metal... If you like Strapping Young Lad, Mnemic and Fear Factory, you will like Dagoba. I really dig the drumming on there self titled album.

Lollipop Lust Kill and Sub Dub Micromachine... Wasn't going to originally name them as they are more just straight Industrial then Metal... But that doesn't subtract from how awesome I think they are... SDM sometimes does sound like Korn... But much much better.

Damn... Looking back, it looks like i named Lollipop already... Oh well, they are sic... to sic for a 'k'... or proper grammar for that matter.

I have been enjoying Takamizawa Toshihiko a lot recently. This guy wails pretty good for a 45 year old. heh.

and a japanese band known as ムック (which I think would be pronounced Mookk).

It takes me a while to discover these musicians but often it is worth it.

Something about the videos just makes me not want to listen to them... I think it's the hairpsray and glam revival.

Anyone else like Katatonia? Here's a leaked song from their upcoming cd.

Sounds good to me. I loved The Great Cold Distance, so I'm really looking forward to their new cd Night Is The New Day.

METALLICA!!! Darkest Hour, Shadows Fall, Slayer, As I Lay Dying, Megadeth, Unearth, 36 Crazyfists, August Burns Red, and Killswitch Engage. those are my favorites in order.

CDailey: I'm a big Katatonia fan! Prog/Doom Metal is IMO the best metal genre! :D

akjay: Some good bands, good to see another 36 Crazyfists fan!

Another Katatonia fan here. I really like they’re music, though, their latest productions sound more Alternative than Doom. Just listen to their single, My Twin, it resembles allot like Tool.
It’s not a problem to me, I like them either way 👍

Is that Mucc? I can't see the writing and the vid isn't loading, but from the pronunciation you gave it sounds most logical. If so, I've been listening to them for a few years. Pretty good stuff. Dir en Grey is more good stuff, I especially like the new CD Uroboros.

Anyone heard Altar of Plagues?

from last.fm:
Altar of Plagues create dense, expansive and textural black metal, which incorporates elements of progressive metal.

Think 12+ minute songs, massive shrieking and a slushy/black metal sound. I'm still listening to their album "White Tomb" for the first time, and it doesn't really sound bad.

EDIT: Better yet, from Progarchives.com
They play a very clean, yet dense atmospheric style of black metal, often with songs spanning past the ten minute mark. Like many other black metal groups, their lyrical matter is dominated by natural themes, and much like their American cohorts WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, their debut White Tomb is about the conservation of Earth, and their homeland of Ireland.

Altar of Plagues have released two EP's Through the Cracks in the Earth (2007), Sol (2008), and the critically acclaimed debut LP White tomb (2009). Fans of Ambient or Atmospheric black metal may enjoy this due to their lush texturing, and epic approach to songwriting, which may also appeal to fans of Post metal and sludge due to the repition of chord progressions, cleaner production, and the use of more sludgey style of vocals. Recommended to fans of both genres.

That is some damn good stuff!! 👍 I was really able to zone out while listening to that and let the music really swallow me... Good experience.

Hey Tom... whats your last.fm profile?

And since I'm more or less a collaborator of progarchives.com I listen to a few Prog albums every week. This week I've listened to the previous mentioned Altar of Plagues and I'm currently listening to Anthropia's new album 'The Chain Reaction'... which I'm still marmitey about.

While the music is top notch (though it reminds me a bit of a slower Luca Turilli, though not as fantasy-themed), I'm not a fan of the lyrics or the voice. There's a strong prog influence in it which makes me happy; there's stop-n-go drums and guitars and a few synth improvs. I might keep a few tracks for my permanent list, regardless.

Just to let you all know, I started a Disturbed Fans group in the Social Groups area for those of you who who like Disturbed (I suspect there aren't many, but there should be a few of you around here).
On another note..I've been Listening to a bit of Scar Symmetry and am enjoying it much more than I thought I would. I just want to say thanks everyone for opening my eyes to the different styles of metal. :):)👍 Cougar23

Screamo Metal here! haha.
As i lay dying
August burns red
... some death
bury your dead
etc.
YEAH!!!!!!!!! I listen to all of those ALOT. you should check out Darkest Hour or Unearth if you like those bands. Lamb Of God is kick ass too
