The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

Couldn't anyone at Mazda have said, "Hey, gang, why don't we make the tail light follow the crease in the sheet metal?"

Jaguar does this. That's why it looks good. Otherwise, it would look stupid and amateurish. Or weird and Japanese.

Okay, maybe a little.

I don't like front end ( not Miata enough for me ) but with a weight of 2,200 ~ 2,300 who cares...

Now I really can't wait for price.

Thanks, FCC. That looks cool.

The roundy part looks so weird on a roadster. They should have been spaced out more.

Mazda, however, can still atone for this sin by giving us a fastback coupe.

Should be within a few $$$ of the current car. Though it might be safe to say that it will be higher since the 5spd option is now gone.
I guess it will also depend on power levels.

Look at the shape of the soft top. If the PRHT looks identical, I don't see why they would offer a coupe.

It'll all come down to what engine is thrown in there. As much as I'd like to have the 1.5L in the States as a cheap Jalop option, even with the 2.0L, it'll be a great deal at give/take $24k. I just hope they skip the weird price packaging that they have on the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6.

EDIT:

195/50R16s?

Cheap. Comfortable. Yes. Someone gets it.

Well, at least we can confirm its an open-top sports car! :P

60 is a tall sidewall. I have 205/50/15's on my RX-7 and I feel that size is just about perfect for a small car. I'm glad that it has smallish wheels.

Edit, live stream is up again. I like the front from this angle:

It's a 50 sidewall.
The projected 16" tire is slimmer than the 16 on the current MX-5.
The car on display today seems to be wearing the same re050a 215/45/17 as the current 17".

I am dissapoint. Looks like a generic roadster now. It lost the Miata touch.

Not a fan of the direction modern car design is taking.

The interior is similar to the new M2. Which is awesome.

I was thinking the Mazda6/Mazda3 switchgear looked pretty good in there. I'd like to see the interior without the nav screen. But, hey, actual knobs and buttons!

EDIT: Oh hey, the show car has the 16" wheels! Looks great!

...Still no engine specs...

I think the 16s look 100% perfect on the car.

I've always thought the Miata wasn't bad looking, just simple and ok. The last facelift was again abit meh and not all that amazing, but still ok. This however is the first time I looked at a miata and actually found it very nice looking. While the headlights I feel are odd and abit off (seems flat to me), its actually a looker I think. Tail lights I still haven't quite formed an opinion and I'd rather have a look at multiple angles before I get an idea (because I'm not onboard the "It looks like the Jag's" train yet)

Would you happen to have any closeups? I know the car sitting outside the show has the stock NC 17 bridgestones. So I'm wondering if the stage car has the 16" advan from the current SPORT trim.

I'm bummed they cut off Bob Hall's interview for no apparent reason. It was very interesting.

I disagree. I think the tail lights are actually pretty cool, it just looks unfamiliar.

Though not exactly alike, I think they're somewhat reminiscent of the RX-8 rear lights with the round portion on the inner side. Along with the XK taillights, that's all the familiarity I'm getting.

I also agree that they looks great as they are. The front isn't doing much for me though (for once, the rear is actually cuter). At least they've kept it relatively clean and simple while maintaining the sharp angles of the Kodo design language. The bonnet gap's diversion above the Mazda badge even reminding me of the Huracan's hood design.

Small-ish looking rear wheels aside, the profile is as sleek and unfussy as I could have hoped. Not bad at all.

I think they learned with the previous Coupe that it just doesn't sell compared to the convertible.
Plus that would immediately draw BRZFRS comparisons which isn't what the car is about.

I am a bit worried though. The lines of the car would make it pretty tough for an OEM RHT as they've had with the previous gens.

The second the new Miata came out of the fog I was pissed. It's exactly like the renders. If they had pulled an Alfa design on the tailights or a Jaguar rip-off it would've looked good. I don't really like it.

I'm with @Omnis on this. Nobody is going to buy a brand new Miata. At least for now....

To be fair, I didn't see a Miata badge anywhere on that car, or the previous gen. Just saying.
There are plenty of retired old farts with money who are currently frothing at the mouth. Which is good because that's pretty much the great majority of MX5 buyers.

About the tires, it looks like they went down 10mm in width for both the 16 and 17 inch wheels.
I'm starting to believe the rumors of 155-165hp.
