^ Embargo kept them from talking/typing until next week, but actions speaks louder.

Still impressed by how small they've made it. You get so used to seeing cars far bigger than their predecessors that seeing one the same size, despite a quarter century of development, is quite amazing.

The R35 in that shot is actually sitting more to the left. If you moved it to the right and aligned it with the edge of the R34, it wouldn't be much wider.

Its safe to say, the MX-5 has done a reverse Bruce Jenner. It has really transformed into a masculine car. Its more "RX" than MX, now.

But it's still a bit larger.

Poor photoshop of a NA and a ND>

I don't see too much wrong with this picture.

Other than a right hand drive, German-plated new MX-5 under studio lighting next to a left hand drive German plated NA MX-5 under natural lighting driving through an alternate reality Detroit, Michigan; a combination of the foreground of Woodward Ave @ Grand heading northwest, and the background of Washington @ State heading south....unless somebody simply moved the Detroit Free Press building to the middle of Woodward Ave of course.

Same pair from a slightly different angle, one that has a more equal amount of perspective distortion. They look nearly exactly the same dimensions.

The ND is going to look diminutive next to basically any other car on the road.

It was tiny standing next to it in Detroit, but not ridiculous. I think what caught me off-guard, less than the overall size, was how low it seemed even compared to other sports cars. Even the NC that was near it seemed tall by comparison.

First US spec reviews, I probably should have specified. There was an embargo until today.

That black one looks excellent. Looks far more exotic than past MX-5s too. I think the slight hint of BMW in the lines make it look more expensive.

Black is excellent.....when it's clean. And in Arizona, good luck with that. My GTi is black, and my next car will not be.

Edit: Re the Car & Driver review, 14.6 @ 95mph in the 1/4 mile is definitely not slow for 155hp 4-cylinder.

As is my current MX-5. I have to get it washed every couple of weeks. The car park at work is very dusty. As soon as it rains it brings down all the dust into neat patterns all over the car. Pain in the arse, but I'd never appreciated before how good an MX-5 can look in black.

I live/work in the middle of AZ farm country, so I can wash my car and two days later it has 1,000 miles worth of bugs on the front and so much dust from tractors kicking it up that it's almost brown.

Never again. :P I fact, my next car will be brand new and it will not be my daily driver for the above reason. Going to find a cheap beater for that.

Man, it's easily faster than the NC with less power. Good job Mazda. 0-60 in 5.9 seconds is seriously impressive. Faster than the FR-S/BR-Z and not considerably off pace of the S2000....with 155hp. Crazy.

from C&D:

the MX-5 is an extremely rewarding car to drive just in the manipulation of its controls.

That is precisely why I love Mazda. Even my lowly 2 feels good driving around a parking lot at normal parking speeds. No other mainstream car maker seems to be interested in this.

Yeah, the car's performance is impressive. I'm just curious as to how well it'd do with the 2.5. It would probably be quicker by a few tenths.

Keeping the "Zoom-Zoom" name to it's finest.

I just realized that the MX-5 almost exactly matches the Focus ST in acceleration. 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile time and speed are basically the same. I've driven an ST quite a bit. That amount of acceleration in a stock, n/a MX-5 is nuts. WANT.
