The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

Car mags in the US generally test with a full tank of gas and some equipment, so a tenth or two quicker is not unimaginable.

Just imagine this car with even the previous generation 13b. 230hp and probably 50-100lbs less weight, plus 9,000rpm and that sound.:drool:

I remember Road & Track posting an old test of an NA series with a 13B in it. An ND with the 13B would be cool too. But it would probably suck gas.

5.9s to 60? Wow. My old 93 Corvette only managed 60 in 5.5s and it had 300hp!

I need to build an engine for my NA8 haha.

you wont need a V8 for it. ;)
wait for it....

Now all we need is a Mazdaspeed version. ;)

heh heh

I just realized that the MX-5 almost exactly matches the Focus ST in acceleration. 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile time and speed are basically the same. I've driven an ST quite a bit. That amount of acceleration in a stock, n/a MX-5 is nuts. WANT.
Bear in mind that the feeling of acceleration will be quite different between the two though. The MX-5 will do those figures, but it'll need absolutely hammering to do them, while the Ford will feel fast most of the time thanks to being turbocharged.

Not that that's a bad thing for the Mazda, but in day-to-day driving it probably won't feel as fast as the numbers suggest.

And of course, the sensation of speed between a hatchback and a small roadster will be different anyway. What the Mazda loses in that pushed-back-in-the-seat feel it might gain from having the top down and the wind rushing past.

I'd have to see it to believe it... but the car is so light, it might just be possible.

Even if they've overstated it a bit, the MX-5 is still comfortably faster than the 86. Which was always pretty much a given, considering how peaky the Toyota's power band is, and how much heavier it is.

Now I can express my disappointment with the Toyobaru powertrain without being called a power-hungry meat-head.

I still like the idea of an 86, but if I owned one I'd now be one of those people immediately seeking a supercharger to give it a bit more pep...

Even if 86 owners add a blower, the 86 will still be trumped by the MX-5 in the near future. ;)

Hopefully "near future" is quicker than it's taken them to give us the new Mazdaspeed3. ;)

Aside from the CX-9, I belive the entire range of Mazda has been replaced. Hopefully that means we'll get pumped up variants of the new fleet. An MPS version of the 6, 3, and CX3 would all be awesome. As, of course, would the MX-5.

Potential PRHT variant.

If it's more like a Z4 or Spoon S2000 fastback, I welcome it. As it stands, I need that drop top over a fixed roof. Security? If someone wants it, they'll steal it anyway they can. 45ºC heat or not, nothing beats a roadster.

I do want some aftermarket wheels for the track instead of getting the black BBS. It's just, the more I look at the stock wheels, the less I want to change them.

Any info on whether the 'speed is going to change those nasty tail lights?

You're joking, right?
The Miata meet ups that I go to were being visited by Mazda designers and corporate people on a weekly basis. They said they were getting info on the car culture and what current trends were popular with the Roadster crowd. A lot of the cars in a local scene change out the tail lights, so maybe they assumed we prefer round lights?

Just speculation...

At the moment, all I know for a fact is, I'm spending my money on the "N-a" variant of the ND. :) That's all the power I need.

What are we guessing for MPS power numbers> 200? 220? New turbo engine or beefed up 2.5L N/A?

And does Mazda drop this bomb before the car I want comes out and they persuade me to buy an ND instead? :sly:
