The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

I'm looking forward to MX-5 club races. 1.5L and 2.0L classes racing together at Eastern Creek would be awesome. As it doesnt look like the Global cup car is coming here. Maybe as a support race for the AGP.

Scripted result... but that was still massively fun. Looks like the car will simply get up on two wheels with the right set of rubber. Just like the 2...

So, I drove this yesterday:

2.0 Sport. Feels quick. Makes a nice noise. Great driving position, neat interior, surprisingly good ride even on the larger wheel option. Steering felt a little light for my tastes, and lacking in on-centre feel, but I'd like to try one on more familiar (and drier) roads before I commit to a verdict. Intrigued to try the 1.5 now.

Is that on the larger wheel option? On center feel should/might improve with the 1.5 if experience with the Mazda 3 carries over.

Gah, I wish these things were a tad cheaper. As it is, I would have to buy the super base model and even at $25k that's the tippy top of my budget.

Space-wise on the interior, did they upgrade from anchovy can to sardine can?

I'm getting it regardless. It's going to be my last new car. Put it this way, I'll rarely be on the freeway and I'll do some track days. I know it'll be faster than a Mazda 2 so, I'm fine with that. 128.738 hp is enough for me. :D

I'm 5'9" ish and maybe 150lb. All MX-5s are big enough for me.

The new model is probably a little smaller inside than the NC, but then it's a smaller car in the first place so that's to be expected. The trunk is smaller too.

Both are better than the NA/NB, mainly because you sit lower in the cabin so there's more headroom for taller folk. I climbed back into my NA after driving the ND around for an afternoon and felt like I was sitting on a bar stool.

I did find the seats quite figure-hugging in the ND though, so those of a larger build might find it a bit more cramped than before.

Edit: I've not checked the spec sheets to see whether the ND comes with fabric seats (the one I drove had leather) but in my experience, the leather seats in MX-5s are firmer than the fabric ones so you sit higher. The other NA I drove the other day had fabric seats and they felt about an inch lower than the leather ones in my car. And the NB with leather pews felt ridiculously perched.

Really? Everyone says it has the most room on the inside of all of them.

Im looking forward to seeing whether it's gone from "comical" to just "tight".

I'd definitely say it feels more snug, but like I say, I'm not the best judge since they've always been fine for me anyway. I think the transmission tunnel intrudes a little less in the ND than it does in the NC... but then I didn't sit in the passenger seat, which would be the more relevant side for the US market...

Well, that's good to know. Last time I attempted ingress in an NC, my right knee ****ing destroyed the center console. Gave me a good bruise, and I don't bruise easily. I fit pretty well... much like how they get the mattress in this box, in fact:

(except this mattress is a Queen. haaaayyyy)

If Ginetta would just import cars to the US, we probably wouldn't care about any of this.

I'm not sure the centre console is any smaller, it's just the physical space that the gearbox occupies takes up less space in the footwell. In the NC, in RHD markets, it squeezes your feet a little to the right. Nowhere near as bad as an old 3-series BMW does in RHD markets, but enough for the slight offset to get a little painful after a few hours behind the wheel.
