The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

Well, we're only getting 5. One is the white 1.5 GT in the photos I posted, another is a Soul Red w/tan leather 1.5 GT already ordered. The rest are GTs as well. Looks like I'll be on the waiting list for my base Ceramic white 1.5.

Reading on Miata.net about initial modifications for US spec cars, and some shops that have experience tuning the Skyactiv 2.0L in the Mazda3 think they can get another ~20 wheel HP out of the car with nothing but a simple tune.

I am seriously going to wrap mine in Competition or Sunburst Yellow. Took my wife to see it and see reckons, "Isn't 'RED' the color for MX-5s?" She likes the Seoul Red on the CX-3. Every single person, couple and people that can afford a second car, need to own one. Can't wait.

You know they're making yellow as an option, right? I think it looks great

I've checked on the color and no one I spoke to knows for sure. If there is such an option, it's not here. I've checked at a dealer that have their 5 cars on display(Soul Red, Crystal White Pearl, Jet Black, Blue Reflex and Meteor Grey). No yellow on the cards.

Perhaps it's different for Australia, but I know I saw in a brochure there was an option for Sunflower Yellow.

There was a supposed leak for the color in a japanese brochure(I had it as my avatar a little while back ;) ). The Mazda Japan website doesn't have "Sunflwr Yellow" as a color choice.

Definitely not in the US, not sure for anywhere else. Even the light blue that I want is only available on the GT model.....lame.

It'll look good in matte Army green with white wheels. Heck, any color is going to look good on this car.
My alternative would be wrap it matte clear over the ceramic white but, it will be yellow.

MAZDA has confirmed that it is investigating a successor to the MX-5 Roadster Coupe, although the car may be radically different to the folding hardtop design that was successfully introduced in previous-generation guise in 2006.

Set for a 2017 launch and to sell alongside the just-released ND Roadster, the second MX-5 ‘RC’ is rumoured to be more coupe-like, with reports suggesting a sleeker profile than the three-box folding-hardtop arrangement that came before.

While Mazda ND MX-5 program manager Nobuhiro Yamamoto would not divulge timing or other RC details, he said the second body style is vital, as it will ensure ongoing interest in the front mid-engined two-seater sportscar after the initial buzz starts to wear off in a couple of years.

“It is coming as a later addition,” Mr Yamamoto told GoAuto at the launch of the latest MX-5 in Queensland last week. “The new MX-5 has a long life, so it may come later to keep the model fresh. It is being studied right now for maybe future development.

“The old Roadster Coupe has been a big success, with more than 60 per cent of sales in the end.”

Dismissing speculation about the possibility of the RC being a fixed-roof coupe or targa-top design, Mr Yamamoto reiterated remarks he made in the press earlier about the MX-5 always being a drop-top.

“The MX-5 will always be a convertible,” he said.

Weighing in on the intrigue, Mazda Australia managing director, Martin Benders also hinted strongly at the possibility of an all-new design approach to the next RC, adding that it should ensure more consistent sales for the lifecycle of this-generation MX-5.

“I am sure if they do decide another Roadster Coupe they will differentiate that as well – they won’t just replicate what they had with the NC,” he said.

“It will have something new to extend the range, so that’s basically what they’ re trying to do with this vehicle – give it a more stable volume position within the Mazda range. Not so that the numbers would match a Mazda3 or 2, but something that can appeal to a broader base.”

Mazda released the first MX-5 RC in August 2006, within 12 months of releasing the fabric-roofed NC-series convertible, with the folding hardtop version eventually usurping the latter from early 2012 until the ND launched this month.

Meanwhile, a detachable hardtop may become available on the MX-5 via a third party accessories providers. Mr Yamamoto said that a number of suppliers were shown the basic design and schematics for the convertible months before its September 2014 unveiling.

“Different companies were shown MX-5 prototypes and asked to design and/or propose a detachable hardtop,” he said.

To aid its fitment, a body-coloured small plastic strip on either side of the car leading from the trailing edge of the roof mechanism to the top corner of the bootlid houses the fasteners needed to secure the plastic hardtop underneath

:(

Edit: Love these bits from the second article, though:
Mr Yamamoto revealed he co-operated with Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada to help make the latter pair better sports cars, because Mazda believes the resulting competition would grow the market and help foster the next generation of enthusiasts, benefiting the entire Japanese car industry.
From the driver’s seat, the shape of the bonnet and front mudguards is meant to be reminiscent of the original model's pop-up headlights, that were binned for the second-generation to boost pedestrian impact protection.
On the latter, I never really thought about it that way, but the view down the bonnet in the ND is absolutely fantastic, as the arches are so pronounced.

I'm taking one home from work tonight - driven a few already, but always look forward to it.

I see the view out the front like a C6 Corvette. It's an all win car to me.
“We’re seeing urban, childless couples who are professionals, living close to the city, maybe in an apartment… they probably don’t even use their car during the week… they only need a weekend car, and this is the perfect weekend car.. so it’s probably the right car for its time… again.”

Makes sense to me.

Unless a person doesn't fit in the driver's seat, there is no reason anyone looking for a new ride, should bypass this car. NDs for everyone!
