The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

The car doesn't seem really fit to be lowered appearance-wise.
The wheels need to be smaller, no bigger than 16. And wider obviously. These 17x7. The flushness is good but they look skinny and the tire look weak.

16x8 +25 with 195/50:

That could use a little more offset in the rear and a couple more lows.

15x8 +25:

If that thing was dumped it would look super sick. Also, somehow I'm not believing that a Japanese person is buying a small brake package from Flyin' Miata. They probably just chose wheels that don't suck (6UL I'm looking at you, you boring ass little barrel you) because, actually, 15s will probably fit just fine.

Clearly, x8 +25 is a good fitment. Could probably fit x9 with a slightly higher offset and pulled fenders. Yeah, easy. That'd be stancey.

I can't lie, I don't like the styling of the new one--squinty headlights and taillights seemingly purloined from the F-Type. My feelings may well sway some once I've gotten some seat time, as I'd imagine hope they improved on the competent outgoing model (which I do like), but it's still got a face only a blind mother could love.

17s look fine with some sidewall. You don't need to change the brakes either (they did here though).

But 17s with some sidewall mess up your speedometer in the wrong direction. Also, what the hell is with American Miata people and 6ULs? Get over it, people, have some imagination.

That Fiat definitely takes the honors for most preposterously ugly car of 2015. Could it be any more dopey and disproportionate? Not that the 124 had anything approaching classic sports car proportions, because at didn't, but it least it wasn't offensive to look at. Look at the proportions of all the design elements in this side view...there is no socially acceptable language to describe how awful this car looks.

I do like how they didn't really change the interior at all though. At least they didn't ruin the hard work Mazda put into that.

I had a long and drawn-out argument with another TG writer over that on FB... a guy who does photochops for the mag from time to time.

I recognize that some design elements are nice. The fact that the car has an actual shoulder over the front wheels, for one, instead of having it chop off, and a more flowing bootlid. Oh and the strakes on the hood are rather nice...

But... it reminds me so much of the Brera. Not that it looks like it. But because it's something of a similar situation. A good design ruined by awful overhangs. It feels like they've added the extra hundred-odd pounds over the MX-5 in all the wrong places. At the corners of the car, which are taller, longer and... well... taller. There's supposedly an extra five inches or so over the ND. Fiat made the nose so tall it feels like there's twice that.

If it ain't broke... :D

They really should have just made an Alfa variant. The car is already halfway there, look-wise.

A year on, and I still think my double-bubble roof is realistic. Especially after driving the MX-5 a few times and finding out how low the windshield really is...

And to give Fiat credit, we both ended up enlarging the booty. There really is no space at all in that ridiculous little trunk.

I'm getting the impression that Mazda will be the one screwing this together? If that's the case, this will probably be the most-reliable Fiat since the American-built Chrysler 300 thing. Interesting as well that it uses the SkyActiv 6-speed automatic with the 1.4T, which is quite a departure from the dual-clutch unit (read, garbage) unit normally attached to it in other applications. Really curious to hear how it drives in that configuration.

They wanted more Cargo space to make it more practical. and Its Not that much overhang,
"exaggerated by comparison. Fiat says some of this was done to increase cargo capacity, and make the small roadster as functional as possible. The Miata has 4.6 cubic feet of trunk volume, and the 124 has 4.9."

The difference is mostly in the Rear and the fact that the 124 actually has a bumper compared to the MX-5

It's amazing how much better it looks when it's low to the ground like a sports car instead of high like a crossover.

I'm still not a fan of it's face, but I think it looks like a fine car once it doesn't have a gap you could stuff children in at the top of the wheelarch.
